He’s depth, I’d be hoping for half that at most. Prioritise Culley, Chesser, XON, the draftees etc.

Culley, Chesser and the draftees yes.

XON no. He's just as much 'depth' as Clark. Will be his fifth year in the system in 2023, not sure how long you can give a midfielder in the AFL to prove he's something more than a C grade player.

Barrass didn’t do much just a bit of low key kicking with Bazzo and Waterman away from the main group. He looks in really good shape though

Gov actually joined in some of the drills with the main group. Took me a while to confirm it was him because he looked too thin to be Gov at first. Pie shops in North Beach must be feeling the pinch

Yeo was also there but worked away from the main group with (I think) Foley

Hurn, Gaff and SPS weren’t there

LEdwards and Rotham I couldn’t see. Might have been there without me being able to pick them out

Shuey did most of the work. Same with Allen, Sheed , Cole and Chesser

Naitanui was running and jumping but ideally would be a bit thinner. There’s time to work on that, whether it happens who knows

Aside from Nic, it must be said that the group as a whole look in really good shape. Even Ryan appears lighter as well as Kelly

Training didn’t finish until 10.30 but whilst I was there (arrived at 9.30) it wasn’t a particularly intense session. Assumed any running was done beforehand as they were doing some goal kicking when I turned up

Great to hear, thanks for the report!

Well the bit we can read confirms that I wasn’t the only one who noticed Gov was in good shape

I was really surprised at how good he looked, albeit from a bit of a distance
He seemed to be in good shape last year too. His form was good at the start of the year but he had some really unfortunate injuries.

Anyone?

It's very long so I'll spoiler it

West Coast vice-captain Jeremy McGovern has returned to pre-season training in excellent shape as he looks to return to his All-Australian form.

In the absence of Keys I went down for a trundle this morning to check them out on return. Just a few random notes I took down...
  • A lot of running work again, clearly a focus even in the heat.
  • Duggan looked on and was hitting targets left and right. Set for a huge 2021.
  • Giles went up against Vardy in the ruck contests and I'd say that Giles has the inside running at the moment.
  • Mitchell looked a class above the other midfielders bar Priddis. Just knew how to find the footy and wouldn't miss a target all session. Shuey was very quiet and seemed to be taking direction from Mitchell. Doesn't bode well for his captaincy credentials, maybe he doesn't want the gig?
  • Won't say too much about it in case I was just reading too much into it, but Rioli looked as though he'd enjoyed the Christmas break a bit too much. A few of the coaches pulled him aside and they were having quite an animated conversation before Rioli was sent to do laps for the rest of the session. Good news for Le Cras, I suppose.
  • Sheed kicked on his right foot for 80% of the session, I reckon. Nice to see players working on their non-preferred so readily.
  • Petrie looked like he was doing a great job 'coaching' the younger forwards in between the drills. Darling in particular seemed to be following him around.
  • Gee Venables has some skills. He mainly jogged laps before spending the last half hour or so on set shots - curled a few beauties from behind the boundary line at the end for a bit of fun. Hardly saw him miss a kick.
  • What interested me the most was that McGovern split his time between the defenders and the forwards, could be seeing a swingman role in 2017. He was his usual dominant self down back in some match simulation drills before going head-to-head with Mackenzie in a forward role.
  • Bayok is very fast - Cripps was in most of the drills with him and couldn't keep up.
  • Nelson is pale as buggery and still doesn't really have the body shape you'd expect of an AFL player.
  • There was a big bloke who pulled up next to me and I could have sworn it was Suma, but I'm sure I was wrong...
  • Masto was the player picked to kick the goal at the end today and nailed it. Celebrations were huge.
  • No sign of Cole, Parto or Hill. Couldn't tell you why.
  • Will upload pics later if I have time. Let me know if you have any questions

Just out of interest, were the injuries sustained last year related to those of late 2018?

Did we ever find out the full diagnosis of the issue that ended Govs season last year?

It's the innocuous ones that can worry you the most.

West Coast vice-captain Jeremy McGovern has returned to pre-season training in excellent shape as he looks to return to his All-Australian form.

McGovern and reigning fairest and best winner Tom Barrass were the latest senior players to return to training early, with just dual All-Australian wingman Andrew Gaff and recruit Jayden Hunt yet to be spotted at open sessions since the team returned last week.

McGovern, 30, is looking to get back on track after playing just 10 games in 2022, with the four-time All-Australian badly breaking his ribs in the Eagles’ round 14 loss to Geelong.

The collision with Cats forward Jeremy Cameron broke McGovern’s ribs so bad that he had to have a plate inserted and spent days in the hospital before a medical review ended his season.

McGovern has been one of several Eagles called out by commentator and The West Australian columnist Kane Cornes for being overweight the past 14 months years.

He has played just 37 games over the past three years because of injuries, with Cornes suggesting in a column this year that McGovern shouldn’t have a guaranteed contract because of his previous issues with his weight.

McGovern looked noticeably slimmer as he hit the ground running, while still holding a solid upper frame.

Barrass eased back into the session, doing some athletic running drills before joining a group of about 30 players in some hard running.

The 27-year-old is coming off a career-best season after signing a monster five-year deal last December.

West Coast put the players through the most intensive running session so far this pre-season, with the players putting plenty of kilometres in their legs.

Premiership stars Jamie Cripps and Tom Cole led the pack, with delisted midfielder Zane Trew also in the front half of the pack as he looks to get a spot on the rookie list this Wednesday.

Superstar ruckman Nic Naitanui and Liam Ryan did their running and skills work away from the main group as they work their way into the summer schedule, before joining in later with the high-intensity skills work.

Ryan, sporting a big beard, also looked to have dropped some weight as well after kicking a career-low 19 goals in 17 games.

Captain Luke Shuey ran alongside defender Liam Duggan away from the group as he comes back from a calf injury sustained this month.

Powerful midfielder Elliot Yeo stepped up his training slightly as he comes back from yet another calf injury.

Yeo lifted his intensity and looked more relaxed as he tested out the calf with a series of half of the run-throughs under the watchful eye of the conditioning staff.
Veteran Shannon Hurn was the only other noticeable absentee from the session.

Gaff is probably trying to enjoy a holiday and would now be pressured to come back early.

I actually hope he is resting and recovering.

He was clearly hampered by some sort of injury last season, and played through it to the detriment of all parties.

Of all of our list, I'm confident he can get himself fit off a more limited pre-season, but if he is hampered ongoing then it doesn't matter how many pre-season miles he has done.
