No rush. Reckon he and his manager will want to put together a body of work in the first half of the season to get a nice, fat contract.

Seems like the kind of bloke who'll be a one club player also.

Dunno if this would feel too 'exclusive' or feel like we were writing off other players like say O'Neill or even Baker but I'd be getting the midfield and development coaches and sitting down that group of:
Barnett, Culley, Hough, Chesser, Ginbey, Hewitt, maybe Burgiel depending on where we see him fitting.

And saying to these guys - some of you may start back and some forward but over the medium term you lot are going to drive what our midfield is going to be. Both in performance and culture. It's rare that a midfield group all comes through together at a similar age but it's hopefully what we've got with you guys - don't have to all be best mates but use this to build chemistry, drive each other, make each other better etc. Get a self-sustaining, perpetual motion machine of a midfield unit going.

I know we're excited about our young talent for talent's sake but realistically the sum of the parts still isn't that of say Gold Coast with a million top 5 picks on the list and I also don't think we have a true Selwood midfield inspirer to drag everyone up to that next echelon through senior leadership. This group's collective development (not individual) is what'll make or break it as a great midfield unit IMO, and think that development will have to in a large part come from each other. We have a real chance to promote that unified development while they're all young and learning together - get bloody on it Simmo ya campaigner

Ginbey in his press conference said he’s staying with Bazzo and Chesser and played a round of golf with them and Culley followed by dinner to build a bond. So they’re starting on the right foot

You want to be careful though because whilst I agree that you want a midfield to develop together you don’t want cliques forming in clubs too much. It’s going to be something to manage carefully the next 2-3 years because we still have a biggish group of older 28+ players and are growing group of 21 and unders with not much in between

Looking through the list of players coming out of contract next year, Culley and Hough are the highest priority to be extended beyond 2023

Training sessions open again for the next 2 weeks. Starting a little bit later now as the rest of the playing group officially return on Monday- most of the senior players have been at training regularly and all have made at least 2 appearances in the last fortnight.

Not sure if anything should be read into it, but all the training is being done on the outside (MCG shaped) oval. Since the move, the main group would train mostly on the main oval with anyone in rehab doing so on the outside oval. When splitting into line groups one group would shift ovals so they had more room

I wonder if they’re deliberately staying off the main oval surface - not sure if the two are any different but it is a change

Not sure how many, if any, sessions there’ll be after the 16th as it’s about then they break again for Christmas

Yeah that's true - these are young men who are also in this to enjoy themselves and build relationships and it wouldn't be healthy to base an insular social group on how highly the club rates your midfield potential. It's also not reasonable to expect all those young mid types are going to get along outside footy.

I suppose I was more advocating for that young group to drive a sort of professional midfield standard for each other outside off-field relationships. Using the golf example (and obviously completely imaginary) - it'd be totally fine if say Ginbey decided he didn't really get along with Chesser much but enjoyed the company of Bazzo and the younger backline boys, while Culley over time came to less dinners in favour of going fishing with Gov (and the rest all found their own personal relationships in the club regardless of age/position - that's healthy).

But still had a culture of when we come into work and step out onto the training track as part of the overall midfielders group, we know we're a set of talented young players who'll hopefully play together in that part of the ground for a long time and we're going to take charge of each other's professional effort and hold each other accountable. A group relationship that is expressed more in the gym or in team meetings than in anything like golf or dinners and who they hang out with there. Like if Ginbey and Hewitt ended up with one of those Adam/Jamie (MythBusters) off-field relationships where they're not enemies but don't really hang out or get along particularly, but work extremely well together and make each other better at their jobs (even as mutually beneficial rivals) - that's awesome

Pretty excited to see what he can do next year with a proper preseason under his belt and time to settle in

Like I said yesterday he’s been an early standout on the track

He's going to be a huge ****ing unit when he's done with his 45's.

Get outta da way

The club continues to baffle. I'm really disappointed in this news as it means Clark is on a hiding to nothing and can hope to be played out of position at best.

Serious question:

Do our S&C team even watch AFL football? It's like they are on a different planet.
Clark was so bulky last season so he has not choice but to try slim down a bit and regain some leg speed .

He could get away with it in the wafl but at afl level he is just a big witches hat .

Such a bonus to come out of a shit year .

Add culley to ginbey and Hewett and its like we have drafted 3 first round mids this year !

The midfield clique of 2006 comes to mind...?
but it is a great opportunity to build chemistry, a band of brothers...

McDonald's.

Not obsessed, just a campaigner.

That was the one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought we discussed Hough's (contract) extension on the podcast last year?

Did this not happen?

There was talk he was going to sign a new deal but nothing was ever announced.

Then again, Trew and Winder both got contract extensions without anything being said so who knows

Quick google and the west was reporting he was set to sign for an extra two years. There’s also a Fox article from a month ago naming Hough as our most important contract signing for 2023

Just so it’s clear - the Fox article was about the most important player that each club needed to re-sign. So according to Fox, he hasn’t signed a new deal yet

Yeah my frustration is as always - there's no transparent answer to the question as for whatever reason AFL contracts are shrouded in secrecy due to an the old fashioned idea that its no one's business how much you earn or how long for.

I get there's privacy content that needs to be managed but it'd be nice to have a club sanctioned place available to know how long club employees are contracted for.
