Yeah my frustration is as always - there's no transparent answer to the question as for whatever reason AFL contracts are shrouded in secrecy due to an the old fashioned idea that its no one's business how much you earn or how long for.

I get there's privacy content that needs to be managed but it'd be nice to have a club sanctioned place available to know how long club employees are contracted for.
Don't even need to know how much they're making, just an official club statement on how long they (and our ****ing head coach of all things) are signed for.

Officially the first day back for the full squad even though they’ve all been at the club at least once during the past fortnight

• Nic didn’t get the memo (wasn’t there)
• Darling did a few laps of the oval walking with a trainer. Nothing else
• Yeo, Foley and Exxon did their own running program
• Waterman, Bazzo and Barrass were a bit more involved than previous but once the ball drills started they did their own thing at the other end of the oval to where I was sitting
• The draftees were kept out of training with the main group. Did a little bit of running them a few stationary kick/handball drills. Dewar wasn’t with them initially but did pop up later
• I think I saw Luke Edwards but I’m not certain
• As a group most did several laps of the oval - it was good to see Trew keeping pace at the front of the group with the likes of Cripps, Gaff, Clark and Culley
• Less promising was seeing Kelly and Jones towards the back of the group
• Bailey Williams was well off the pace and blowing hard. His competitor for the second ruck spot, Jamieson, was running comfortably in the middle of the group
• Overall the session was less intense than Friday
• Ginbey is going to be a monster a few years from now when he fills out properly. Has a massive frame
• Hewett even when doing basic stuff is just very neat. Natural footballer neat. Get the feeling commentators will be asking how he slid to pick 13 in the draft when he gets going
• Shuey did basically all of the session - was kept out of the main running group which probably makes sense

Sheed said in his press conference this morning the 2km time trial is on Wednesday. Times from that will be interesting

Thanks for the update, really appreciated.
Williams has been a big disappointment to me, if he doesn’t pull a finger out he could well be overtaken by Jamieson and Barnett.
I thought Jamieson was very impressive last year with his commitment, and effort, looks like he’s bulked up and improved his running. Definitely getting the best out of himself.

And yet Williams comfortably outperformed Jamieson in the ruck role last season.

If he is fit for Round 1, he's comfortably in ahead of Jamo. I expect Barnett to rise quickly through the ranks this year though.

As we start to right some wrongs and make some positive changes within the club (losing Crazy Vozzo aside) it makes me wonder if the club is self aware enough to understand the precarious Captaincy situation and push for a suitable alternative?

I love Shuey, he's my boy, but if he's Captain again this season the club has missed a trick and may not be fully aware of where they're at.

There is nothing to say he cannot be an on-field leader in games he's fit and firing for, but I think we need a fresh start, younger Captain, someone to bridge the club between existing players and new generation, and someone to reliably front up to 20+ games.

Hopefully they ice it early before a Summer of media speculation. Let Shuey focus on his body and leaving a positive legacy for the new crop coming through.

Thanks,
Time trial Wednesday would excuse a lighter session today. Although, I can not get my head around professional athletes calling 'a few laps of the oval' a training session.

I wonder if there’s any issues with Darling or if it’s just they are easing in the older guys?

I don’t want to rule out Bailey Williams just yet - he had an awesome last game - but he really needs to get going this year.

They don't vote on the Captain until toward the end of pre-season. I'd expect it to be resolved around late Jan or early Feb

West Coast Eagles training notes: Jack Darling restricted to walking laps in light session

Feeling the pinch?

It’s only December, but the sight of Jack Darling chatting to fitness staff and failing to even break into a jog while completing laps isn’t a great one for Eagles fans.

Darling missed all of last pre-season due to his reluctance to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and struggled to find his best form in 2022, kicking 34 goals in 21 games.

The 30-year-old last month returned to training appearing in top shape as he gets set to step up in West Coast’s forward line after the retirement of spearhead Josh Kennedy.

But he was restricted to the lightest of duties on Monday at Mineral Resources Park, walking laps while his teammates put in plenty of running.

He then spent time stretching in one of the dugouts before having a long chat with coach Adam Simpson and other officials.

Superstar ruckman Nic Naitanui was a notable absentee at Monday’s session.

Like many of his teammates, the dual All-Australian had returned earlier than needed last month, but failed to join teammates as he comes off post-season knee surgery.

Dual All-Australian Elliot Yeo also continued to train away from the main group as he recovers from a calf injury, as did Xavier O’Neill and Luke Foley.

West Coast midfielder Dom Sheed is looking to take his game to the next level.

You’re going to go far, kids

West Coast’s new kids on the block all turned out for training together for the first time as the Eagles enter a new era.

WA recruits Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett already had a couple of sessions under their belt, but they were now joined by their fellow draftees from interstate.

South Australian ruckman Harry Barnett spent all his time away from the group, starting the session by running with captain Luke Shuey before being joined by development coach Jacob Brennan.

Victorian speedsters Coby Burgiel and Noah Long also made their maiden appearances as Eagles, doing light run-throughs with Ginbey, Hewett as well as Shuey and veteran Shannon Hurn.

The draftees then did some light skills sessions away from the main group, with Barnett finally joining them but failed to kick.

All of the draftees will be slowly integrated into the senior program.

Ramping up

Those Eagles that did join in the main session did not escape lightly.

The session started with some serious running, which intensified slowly as they build towards time trials, which midfielder Dom Sheed said is expected to be held on Wednesday.

Several players coming off serious injuries in 2022 were looking unhampered by their previous ailments, including Sheed, Tom Cole, Oscar Allen and Jeremy McGovern.

There was no surprises in who led the packs, with Jamie Cripps, Andrew Gaff, Cole and Greg Clark pushing hard.

Several of the key position players were at the back, with Bailey Williams, who looks to have added some significant muscle, trailing behind.

Would probably explain his 'blowing up' if he's added a fair bit of bulk over the pre-season.

Yep, whilst not ideal - it is less of a concern that he is lagging behind a little if he has put on quite a bit of weight.

It is pretty difficult to build significant muscle in one off-season whilst also keeping your fitness at an elite level. But a little easier (not easy, but easier) to build fitness from an average-ish level with that extra bulk during pre-season.

Of course that is assuming he isn't Murray Newman levels of off-the-pace... but I'm not going to be too concerned in December (he could also have had a cold, a bad nights sleep, etc etc).
