A lot of people seem to prefer Jamo to Williams, but to me he's more a second ruck but doesn't contribute enough forward to play that role effectively.

You could make the same case for Williams, but I feel Bailey has the scope to do it better.

Jamo looked good around the ground but I also question whether he'll be good enough in the ruck to make it at this level at all.

Ideally we'd have convinced Meek to come here, as I feel he could have been an effective Number 1 post Naitanui, with Barnett developing behind him ready to take the mantle eventually. Shame that was never really on the table.

I'm just not sure I see a solid starting ruckman at any stage in Bailey Williams position. Footy IQ is one of those things along with kicking that is very hard to teach. I would suggest Petch is in a very similar position to Bailey Williams however he is playing a much easier role on the field, isn't undersized and is able to use his athletic gifts on field.

I was stoked when we drafted williams but i was hoping he would grow to 202cm or so and improve his goal kicking. His lack of footy IQ wasn't quite as distinct as a junior. I hope it comes together for him but I have serious concerns. If you could put Jamiesons mind into Williams body you wouldn't have a top 2-3 ruck in the league but you'd have a guy that is just a tier below that and can dominate around the ground. I really hope Jamiesons progression continues as whilst beginning and coming from a much lower level he looks much more like a football player than Williams. Again he is undersized and doesn't have Williams athletic gifts but he's no slouch and could make a great second ruck who can also play key back.

Our other real second ruck option is purely due to Height in Edwards and while he has been groomed to be a Key Defender with his height now I just wonder if the club sees any hope in his ability to learn ruck craft as he could be that solid number 1 ruck. It might not happen till he's 26-28 but he's certainly the right size and is good around the ground whilst a little lacking athletically as a key back.
Does 1cm really matter?

Rowan Marshall has always had a decent contested game and a better footy IQ imo. Also being an undersized version of Rowan Marshall is not the level or Ruckman i'd be hoping for. Unless it's going to be a 2019 level form version of Rowan Marshall for the next 10 years. In saying that Marshall had some genuinely good games last year.

As a club we have been very blessed for rucks since Gardiner

Sort of related, but speaking of all things ruckmen ..... WCE_phil how do you rate Barnett and his chances of making it at the AFL level.

I am interested in yours first. I think HB can play in multiple positions at the next level.

Bear in mind the guy you're asking thought Broadbent was the 2nd coming at one stage

I'm probably in the minority but I don't think rucks are super important.

I'd rather have a gun midfield and a big Boy McEvoy, Lycett, Clark Keating, Mummy type over a decent midfield with the best ruck.

A good backline will cover a so so ruck too

I disagree somewhat, and agree somewhat.

Sure an elite ruck (NN, Gawn, Grundy etc) is neither here nor there in regards to winning a premiership (it doesn't hurt, but is less important that having an elite key forward, an elite mid and at least 1 elite backman).

But also if you have a ruckman who is in the worst half of the league (i.e. in the 10-20th range of best ruck in the league - assuming at stages some teams have 2 in the top 10 ala Melbourne currently) then it does have a huge negative impact on performance.

So I would say rucks are super important, but the 'return on investment' decreases the further you get from middle-of-the-road towards one of the better rucks in the league. I think what we have seen from Grundy also is that paying a ruck as one of your top few highest players can be a recipe for disaster.

Stanley is definitely a bottom 10 ruck in the league.
