Training Pre-Season 2025 - The boys are back in town.

I am not going down a revisionist route but I suspect we were ready for someone to swoop on Knobel and had a backup plan - they spent no time calling out the Riddler's name. Which says two things to me:

1. We rated Knobel at about the point where you would delist and promise to rookie and not cry if you got gazumped.
2. Skinny rucks are longterm development projects and sometimes you get them wrong but some take so long you can't even tell yet if you got it wrong.

Knobel can ruck, of this I am sure, but can he bring it in time and with enough other stuff?

I am pretty high on Riddle. I saw a few of his colts games and he genuinely is another big young dog, fresh off the leash, running around everywhere, doing things big dogs probably shouldn't be capable of doing.

And I liked Knobel.

Nicholls has been nicknamed "Gray" (Grey?) after the cricket bat?

Don't think that will stick
You'd think with the test team "performing" as they are atm they might have steered clear of cricket names.

I'm 100% certain we weren't that worried about losing Knobel. Could be a good or bad decision but I think it is definitely the case.

I think we play better with Darcy in the team, so the long term idea of Jackson and Riddle worries me from that POV. Once they both physically mature they may compete well enough to have their athleticism make it a distinct competitive advantage for us.

Worst case, Riddler can become our 7th CHB.

I have avoided the other comments on training today, so apologies for any double ups:

Two lap runs-

Not everyone was involved (no Sharp as the trendsetter) but don’t you love the enthusiasm of youth. J Carr was out like a bolt of lightning and put a hundred meters on the field and maintained a 50 m lead to the end. Second and third time around he started strong in both but was caught both times.

Other impressive runners were Alex Pearce, Ollie Murphy and Son Son.

Pearce and Son Son have returned in ripping nick as usual.

Worst running effort was Delean and then by the length of the straight (literally) Luke Jackson who was struggling big time.

Being managed-

The group that did the least was Darcy, Sturt, Sharp and ODriscoll ( pink cap - possible concussion).

Darcy did far more than I was expecting including running with a weights bar above his head. He is looking pretty good, still has a little bit of a limp but very far from fat so put that criticism away he is clearly doing the work. I am more concerned with Jackson at the moment who appears to have returned to training in poor shape.

Sturt (and Amiss) have put on the most muscle to my eye with Sturt looking really bulked up.

All of the managed group did enough work to make you feel that they are not that far away from main training.

All the new guys did not participate in training and no Bolton of course.

First TTHD

Son Son - ran really well and left some the much younger players in his wake which was surprising.
The general drills showed that Son Son is still the best kick in the club.

Too far away to determine if everyone was there but looked like a very positive turn out and notably Cox, McDonald and Young in full training.

Jackson had his tonsils removed, and is still not meant to be doing high amounts of running.

Has also added some kegs to his frame, so will need to slowly build back in.

No running allowed from tonsils out? I also question why he needs kegs added, seems a weird decision

Just going off the Brierty interview from this morning. Hopefully the club put it up soon.

Depending on when he had his surgery (and judging by the fact he's still not allowed to run much, I'd say less than a month ago), he will be at risk of post-operative bleeding from the increased blood pressure that comes from vigorous exercise (which can be pretty nasty, sometimes life-threatening...speaking from personal experience with my daughter), which is why he is why he would be under medical advice to not exert himself too much. My question is more the timing of the surgery...if it was a known issue, one would assume that it should've been scheduled much earlier to allow him time to get into condition for preseason training...

Thought Tracey looked great was right up there with his running looks a beast

Jackson went overseas. Likely had surgery as soon as he returned.

The past couple of pre-seasons I’ve seen him running around my local oval and he runs well. Also swims laps at the local aquatic centre adjacent to the oval. Extra sessions so to speak early morning. So no doubt he’ll be down at the local oval making up for lost time.

Thank goodness for that info, I had not seen someone struggle so much since Brodie’s first preseason with us. Bye the bye, Brodie was ok in the running but will never be anywhere near the other midfield runners.
