As per the other reports the standouts for me were Cooper Simpson (has bulked up nicely) and loved that he wants to kick the goal.

Johnson especially but also Erasmus very solid through the midfield.

You cannot help but be impressed with Carr, who really seems a bargain buy, takes a great grab, kicks well and can really run, gave Sharp a real workout on the wing. Nowhere near AFL size yet but a real worthwhile project.

Draper was outstanding in defence and cannot be left out of the first round team, Chapman very good as well and they played really well together.

Narkle certainly provided plenty of sparkle and isn’t just there for Bolton and Pickett!!

Lots of players missed by me because I concentrated on one end of the ground. I really didn’t notice Bolton to be honest.

Interesting scrap in the practice match where Brayshaw and Serong (I think) had to be separated by teammates, definitely had some feeling and took a while to separate.

Negatives included very poor kicking for goal in the first scratch match, they were only recording how many shots taken that registered a score ( not goals and points but they were clearly missing). Second scratch match the scoring improved with Simpson and Narkle impressive.

JOM was very impressive with skills and side step which some will take as a negative!

I have a very good feeling about Carr long term. No reason just seems to have some attributes to become one of those late bloomers who keeps getting better.

Would be amazing if Simpson could make it to the 22 this year. Incredible ball handling.
I can't stress enough how important great ball handlers are.

That doesn't sound good 😕
I’ll be interested in how it is reported in the news tonight (who am I kidding it will be all on the weevils training session).

Some will take the dust up as a positive on how competitive our training is and without any other knowledge, that’s where I will leave it as they always seem great mates.

All part of the drama leading up to the extension. Pretty sure Tim Minchin has written the script.

Don’t be worrying about stuff like that. Two ruthlessly driven men desperate to succeed. Exactly what we want. There’s a few more boys down there I wouldnt mind getting involved in an odd scuffle every now and again.
Brayshaw and Serong won’t let us down too often during the season.

Thanks for the training reports as always.

What’s the verdict on Reid’s pace?

For me it's hard to say. He is instrumental with the ball and gets a bit of it. He may not be used to running and training so much which could be fatiguing for a new player.

His skills don't drop off at all which is a big positive.

I need to watch him closer over the next few weeks to give a more accurate opinion on his pace.

Wonder if Sandi was ever asked to apply for the role, maybe he's moved on from footy. He was doing some coaching with us after he retired, but must be focusing on his family business Gecko Contracting (commercial mowing, firebreaks, there'd be plenty of work out there).

Naismith only played 33 games but was in the Sydney system for 10 years (took almost two years to debut) so probably not a bad coaching recruit.

Sandi has dropped into training most years since he retired from what I've seen. Not regularly, but he was quite involved with Darcy and Meek.
Don't forget the dude lost his toe in an accident. Idk if they reattached it or not.

Apparently not. Missed it his whole career! I think that was the side he always had turf toe issues on too - I bet that was the lack of toe changing his biomechanics and making the big toe vulnerable

Dig out Naismiths retirement speech after his year at Richmond if you can. I'd punt hes a pretty good fit culturally as much as technically, and a great story in resilience given his ACLs.

His daughter had some serious health issues in 2021. He was PT ruck coach with Freo at the time, and since then he has not returned to footy coaching.

She had a mysterious staph blood infection:
“After 10 days in a coma, requiring multiple surgeries and blood transfusions, Sloane emerged and was eventually able to move to the orthopaedics ward.

Her challenge was only beginning, however, with the brave year three student bedridden for the next five months.” An article in March 2023 indicated that she was only just about to start walking without crutches 2 years on.
