How did Leake look up close? Assuming you hung around while it rained.
Watched the the end of the 3rd and last on kayo and I think we just need to get him into the side. Just seems like a natural footballer that is going to excel when given the chance. Did some really nice things while I was watching. Although it was with the second string midfield and Gruz doing the ruckwork so not promising.

I get why we play Bedford but at the expense of Leake would be a real shame

Yep, got to say unless Bedford is playing a tagging role in the midfield it's pointless having him in the middle. So obviously in a practice game it would have made more sense to get minutes into Leake.
Also it looks like Leake has put on the size to play that inside mid role.

I don’t think Bedford has earned the right to be a walk up starter in the midfield, despite his tagging prowess. However it seems the coaching staff like what he brings to the table, so Leake is probably fighting with Rowston for the vacant Tom Green spot.

Agreed. Bedford at times can really hurt us going forward though cause his disposal subpar.

Defensive mid is fine but got to bring more to the table than pure tagging. Reckon it hurt us in the finals last year. When opposition get on a role and he can’t put any pressure back on his opposite number and they can take up ultra aggressive starting positions in the middle

GWS will be without recruit Jake Stringer for the club's upcoming Community Series clash against Carlton as he battles illness. Joining him on the sidelines will be youngster Logan Smith (illness) as well as emerging forward Phoenix Gothard, who hurt his ankle in last week's match simulation against Sydney. In more positive news, veteran midfielder Stephen Coniglio will line up against the Blues at Manuka Oval on Friday. The Giants are hopeful that All-Australian defender Sam Taylor will get a run in before the club's season opener against the Pies.

GWS injury list

Sam Taylor - Concussion - Test
Jake Stringer - Illness - 1 week
Phoenix Gothard - Ankle - 1 week
Logan Smith - Illness - 1 week
Callum Brown - Hamstring - 1-2 weeks
Tom Green - Calf - 3 weeks
Ryan Angwin - Ankle - TBC
Josh Fahey - Foot - TBC

especially without Tom, it is a luxury we cant afford. Bedford is great at what he does, he provides defensive pressure and runs well and can run them off their feet in the open. However, he doesnt have the great hands in close and wont win many clearances, he also isnt a great user. You effectively go in a ball winner short trying to stop there best guy. If you have 3 other guys in there that are good in the clearances it can work. No Tom, no Cogs, the others arent going to win it.

interesting they are not playing the suspended guys, is that because it is an official trial and they cant or is it to work out the best side.
Gothard obviously injured otherwise you'd expect it be in the reserves at the expense of Wehr or Hannaford I'd suspect.

McMullen, Thomas, Riccardi would all be there abouts if available as well you'd think.

Agree. That's why it feels like a trial for spots for Opening Round.
Stringer is the only walk-in replacement in the starting 18.

Utility/2nd ruck - Gruzewski v Keeffe
Wing - Angove v Wehr
Mid - Leake v Rowston
Half back - Hannaford v Stone

That was pretty close to my summation although I think it’s 2 of Angove/Leake/Rowston in midfield who make it and only 1 of stone/hannaford/Wehr in defence mostly cause all reports have been Wehr in defence during pre season and not wing.

Makes it really interesting what we are going to do with our reserve ruck. Is there a genuine possibility of Cads/Gruz rotating through backup ruck/forward. Keefe has been a good servant but we really need a solution that’s better than him come finals

I'd view it as:
  • Wehr vs Stone for the 7th defender
  • with Thomas suspended & Gothard injured, there's a 7th forward spot (4th small forward), so Hannaford vs Angove
  • 2 midfielder bench spots, probably from Rowston, Leake & Angove (as a winger)
  • Keeffe is the backup ruck for Briggs in this game, with Riccardi sidelined it's probably between he and Gruz for the backup 3rd KPF/relief ruck role (with Stringer getting that spot once fit)

Looking forward to some good commentary this afternoon via this group given it will be only be broadcast on Fox/Kayo

Same thought, no injuries please.

Not in playing strips: Wehr, Angove, Rowston. Keeffe practising ball up, and I can't see Briggs.

I am thinking we'll play standard 4 man bench, and swap 4 out, 4 in at half time. Not sure what's the go with Briggs.

Anyone else at the game with eyes on?
