Training Monday 10th Jan

I went and had a quick look this am and noted the following;

. Hilly and Mzungu did very little and left the track early.
. Pav and the first year rookies were absent, as was Sheppard.
. De Boer, Hinkley, Balla, Walters and Ruffles didn't do alot. Very light running and reflex sort of stuff.
. Faulks ran laps early then I lost sight of him so maybe he left early also?
. Clancy did an absolute shite load of running on his own instructed by a young lady trainer.
. In all the match drills Schammer was used as a defender.
. His kicking is still woeful.
. Lower's left foot is dynamite
. McPharlin, JVB, Jonno, Mayne and Clarke impressed me most.
. Clarke's mobility was amazing, gathering stats in the backline as well as into F50 and he even had a shot on goal after linking up from his own disposal out of defense.
. Houghton spewed up 2/3 of the way through but didn't get any sympathy from any of the coaches, just a guy in civies who I assume is a Dr?
. No real surprises but McPhee was used in defense, Jonno in attack.
. Jack Anthony will be glad he doesn't have to play against McPharlin this year - Luke towelled him up in every one on one they went at.
. Griffin looks ok, good mobility, good skills by foot.
. Hinkley is buffed. Not sure if that'll help his game but shit he's chiseled!

That's about it. Sorry it's not as in depth as other reports from those that are better with words than me.

Well as it turns out I headed down for a little bit. Couldn't stay for the whole session. Will comment on the exceptions firstly.

Timmy Ruffles was running laps (looking good too) maybe Faulks too ( wasn't sure, southern cross tat on the shoulder blade), skinny fellow. Bit later I saw Walters doing some laps, left so not sure if he was doing more.
Listened in to hear some bloke say the first years had an afl induction thing on. Didnt see any out and about. Although saw Mitchie in Freo Friday!!
Didn't see Pav, saw Sibo passing footballs with Balla and what I took to be the rehab guys early on.... Not sure what that means:(
Saw some sprints and other drills early on. Gee Zac Clarke runs alright!!
Roberton, Tazzie Devil, Nat Fyfe, Suban all moving nicely. Sandi was putting in during the sprints and was an awesome sight. The bloke I took to be griffin was wearing white shorts and shoes, moves well.
Unfortunately couldn't watch it all, bloody great though. Back to Sydney town tomorrow, so won't be there again any time soon.

That was probably me. The AFL Players Association had their induction day (I assume it was in Victoria), so none of the new draftees were there with the exception of Faulks & Lower (they were previously listed with Sydney & Port Adelaide).

Clarke and Griffin looked to be standouts today for mine. Griffin was marking strongly and using his body well, while Clarke was running around like a midfielder. So often you see ruckmen mark the ball then look around for someone to feed the ball off to, but Clarke seems very confident running with the footy looking for options. He also ran down and trapped a helpless Van Berlo. His confidence is sky high at the moment. Given that and his added bulk, he is looking good for 2011, as is Griffin. This being said, it doesn't look good for big Keps! Competition for spots is looking fierce!

It was interesting seeing guys like Chrichton, Bollenhagen, Lower, Roberton & Fyfe all crumbing to the ruckmen in their drills. It makes me think that we may well see an increase to the midfield rotation this year. Roberton was the real surprise for me, I knew the kid had a good tank, but seeing him run around with the midfielders was totally unexpected.

Re: Training Monday 10th Jan

Yeah, thanks Scham. Fair to say I've been waiting all day for these reports.

Speaking of training I was walking down to Swanbourne Beach this afternoon across Allen Park and saw a bunch of pretty serious looking footy players running around, got a bit closer and saw Haze running in a pack and Murph doing stretches.
I said to the trainer you blokes get lost or something? but he reckons they train there a bit as Dimmer lives up the road.
Poor bastards had to run up and around the giant sand dune between the park and the SAS barracks in what was still 35C heat. Bet Haze is thinking what am I doing this shit for again?

VERY happy about Lower, our defensive kicking skills are looking very good. With Duff, Broughton and now young Lower (assuming he's upgraded) across the defense kicking it out to the Mundy's and co... I like it :thumbsu: If Pitt comes along as well as he should, our skills will be some of the best in the clubs history.

Also very happy about Clarke, rapidly becoming one of my favourite players. Considering the bloke is 20 foot 11 :)rolleyes:), that's a mighty fine effort.

If Lower plays I assume we wouldn't make the same mistake Port Adelaide did of playing him as a HB Flanker and we'd play him right in the middle.

Re: Training Monday 10th Jan

Just to add to the reports I thought Mcphee was the standout and has been impressive all sessions. Seems to have lost a lot of that upper bulk he carried last season and is that slim he was mistaken for Mellington. His pace has increased, his skills are excellent and he is working his arse off,he looks to be heading for a big season.
Also Roberton looks terrific and could be heading for a midfield berth.

Hmmm interesting about Hilly from training reports it seems he hasn't done much on the field in the last month. I'm hoping he has been in the gym which actually does seem fairly likely. I have a feeling he will be back running and practicing more skills work before the months is over.
