Dislocated shoulders depending on severity can still take up to 12 weeks to fully heal, so I'd be very shocked if he's playing Round 1 in less than 9 weeks time.

There seems to be a misconception that dislocating a shoulder wont cause permanent damage. It does and they can remain unstable until the player has a reco.

Some people are lucky and they can play through the stability issues, but nearly always it requires surgical intervention at the end of season or if really unstable immediately.

I'm in the pessimists camp right now. Howard's injury last year left us notably exposed, and that was when we had Battle. Other than Cordy, who is limited, we do not have a single replacement who has any sort of track record in defence (or at all).

When we lost Battle, our key defensive stocks immediately became our biggest vulnerability, and now we are exposed.

It might work out fine if Howard only ends up missing a couple of rounds, but if it blows out it could be very significant. Is Tomlinson (or the like) available as an SSP pick up?

Yep, smart thing would be for club to get him in for surgery now while he has time to rehab and hope he only misses 3-4 weeks.

Did my shoulder 15 years ago and its still never been quite 100% despite doing everything to rehab it.

I don't share your confidence that we can cover him easily. He's a big loss.
It’s quite often the case in footy that an injury like this can kick starts the career of another player who may not have got a look in otherwise.

The way I see it, we’re unlikely to win the flag this year and his absence may just unearth a player of the future on Barrett or Caminitti.

Stars are aligning. Rnd 1 2025 at a hostile Adelaide Oval. Isaac Keeler at full back takes Thilthorpe to the cleaners and the SA natives - NWM, Pou, Keeler, Boyd - put on a show. Each are offered $1m+ to go home which they accept. Saints get great picks but are leap frogged by opposition academy and F/S selections for a discount price. Andrew Bassat screams into his morning Weet Bix.

I think given the timing the club will send Doogs into have the surgery. Then we'd be looking at about 6 months before he is ready again.

In the interim we have a choice to play Caminti or Boyd at full back. Even if we do I would put Howard on LTI and bring in Ethan Phillips, James Van Es or Adrian Cole.

It's not panic stations but it just goes to show how susceptible our list remains particular in critical key positions.

Think Cordy will get first crack at the job. Despite his glaring weaknesses he at least has the height.
Hopefully by round 4 we have Doog's back or Barratt has shown a bit at Sandy.

My guess at Rd 1 defenders

B: Webster, Cordy, Wilkie
HB: Nas, Caminiti/McLennan, Sinclair

With Schoey and Stocker on the bench

What about Sharman helping out down back? Reads the ball well, tough, aerially imposing, spoils strongly, has played down back before. But only 193cm

He would be a decent option for the Battle role but he's finally found some confidence and consistency in role up forward, I'd hate to disrupt that.
