Not the same injury. He had a few different things last year and his season-ending surgery was for plantar fasciitis.

Still not great.

Its not a great sign that his body keeps breaking down under load.

I hope the club makes plans to be without him (invest into Allan) and if he (Mitchell) gets right it's a bonus.

I think I'll be jumping off the Josh Daicos train and starting a new Charlie West avatar in 2025. He's going to be something.

Big bad Leroy Brown vibes. We need to see him do a bit of this.

Warning: Graphic content this may make some people spew in their mouth a little.

He actually reminds me a little of this former SA product, in his movement and build. If he could have half the career of this bloke it would be a good thing.

I was at that game and remember it well. Loved Leroy.

A bloke that size would normally be kicking heaps of goals vs juniors.

There’s also the - wishful thinking? - of comparing physical attributes with similar looking stars of the game. Completely understandable and a trap that I often fall for.

Hope he makes it - he does look the goods.

Decent size lad Westie

He's a powerful looking unit - and just 18!

I commented previously that Charlie's mullet has a bit of Sticks about it.

According to Rookie Me Central :

STRENGTHS:
Aggression
Contested marking
Follow-up work
Speed
Strength
Vertical leap

IMPROVEMENTS:
Endurance
Field kicking

And who cares about his field kicking! He’s gonna be banging them through the big sticks, not trying to hit a moving target! 🤣

Tony Lockett probably had lousy field kicking too!

Big fan of West and he largely went under the radar for the most part which I guess is a good thing. Everytime I saw him play, he reminded me of Nick Larkey, is very competent at rucking in the forward line as well. Strong hands, great on the lead but also in packs . Decision making sound but that could improve. Can kick bags and is a very solid lad right up close if you get the chance, it wouldn't surprise me if he still has some growing to do, closer to 197cm perhaps.

Overall, he should make a pretty decent key forward for many years.

I love the Larkey comparison.

West is the most key forward-looking bloke that we’ve drafted since Travis Cloke.

Here’s hoping appearances aren’t deceiving because he really does look the part, doesn’t he? An exciting prospect!

Someone said Jono Brown and now I can’t unsee it. Hes got that aura about him.

Hes the young key forward we’ve been crying out for for years and will be a fan favourite, I’ve got no doubt.

I will say Reef although recruited as potentially a tall mid played only a few games in the role pre AFL.
He also has hardly played it as part of his development at VFL level.
Been mostly used as a marking fwd and at 194cm would fit the tall fwd takes time bill.

He also as you stated has been given very limited time at AFL level in games and for TOG is iirc our best goal kicker.
Has been used in many games as the sub come on for 10 to 15 minutes.
They also drop him typically after one week in the side.

Honestly I still think he could make it as a fwd if given the same backing in the side as others have received.

But it is pleasing from all reports he is showing great signs down back.

Edit: Also think it's unfair to compare him to Nick Daicos who is on another level then majority of the comp. Talking about someone who is spoken of as one of the best juniors in the AFL era.

Oh I 100% agree

Not many here have backed Reef more than me. I genuinely feel for the kid. Reckon we've dudded him big time.

Like you said, he does as much as he can with the extremely limited opportunities he's given to play a role he wasn't even recruited for.

Poor kid was dropped after being brought in as the sub with like 5 or 10 minutes left in a match, kicked a goal and gave one off in that time and yet they still dropped him lol.

I was also going to mention how unfair it is to compare him to Nick as Nick is a freak. But comparing him to Beau to me is fair game. They were literally drafted together.

I really really hope Reef makes it. I reckon he could be a genuine weapon in any role they actually allow him to flourish in. But in the end, how I feel about Reef is irrelevant. My post/conversation was more based on the foundation of what the coaching group clearly think of him

Defensive work rate?

Or work rate in general? Ie how often he presented at the ball carrier?
I don't like to say workrate, because a lot of things can look like workrate, when it isn't. Like Frampton, as a forward, he was slow to react. It impacts both offensively and defensively. I'd put it down as not seeing the game very well.

That reads like Charlie is a high first round pick, which begs the question - why was he taken so late in the draft?

Unless the draft really was a super draft…
Seems to be more emphasis on getting mids with early picks and because talls take longer to develop clubs seem happy to wait and recruit from another team or develop via alternative ways like Cox, Mihocek etc.
The Whitlock Twins were both considered definites to go early and one of them dropped much deeper in the draft. Jobe Shanahan the same.

Tony Lockett was an awesome field kick, admittedly it wasn't on show most weeks, but when he did wander away from goals, he showed how precisely he could pass a ball - such a talented unit, one of the best ever.

As devastating as it is, I’m not sure how likely it is he plays much (if at all) next year

He’s been off since April

So if 8 months wasn’t enough to get this injury right, then I don’t see how 3-6 months would be.

It’s 3 months until Round 0 and the season is 6 months long. That’s one month longer than he’s had off to try and get over this injury

So yeah, not looking great imo
I thought it was plantar fasciitis then and now mild stress fracture
Seperate ?

Spot on.
I was watching a video from a draft watcher that mentioned this very thing. Its why most mids go early and tbh, it was very mid heavy - which is why fair few, even well rated talls dropped. So the ones mid range dropped even further. That's not to say they aren't any good, just that talls take longer and in a depth draft they just got pushed back and mids are generally more ready made to go.
