100 metres is almost useless in AFL mateThats why he was also one of the best junior runners over 100 metres in the state junior athletics is it? His speed over 20 metres is only an issue after going on long runs and when he exerts too much energy running to the wrong spots.
Website confirms intraclub is 9am on friday, damn
Probably coz it's the one cool day this week
Could be one last look at the SPP hopefuls as well.
I mean, even if he is slower than your average mid, he’s an inside mid through and through, so any coach that’s training him or playing him on a wing (for example) is getting it horribly wrong. Priddis won a Brownlow (albeit via a massive Bradbury) being a slow in and under mid.No way, are you really still pushing that BS? Let it go Freo Leo. Erasmus is not slow.
So it's an opinion not a fact?Watching him play footy for the last 3 years
Watching Brodie burn him off in match Sims
Watching him be burnt off in AFL games
He's slow
You can find the footage and see its factSo it's an opinion not a fact?
I agree, which is why he is wasted as the sub (my original post that people got antsy about)I mean, even if he is slower than your average mid, he’s an inside mid through and through, so any coach that’s training him or playing him on a wing (for example) is getting it horribly wrong. Ive only been down to training twice so if anyone's seen any different please post but both time i was there it was Erasmus leading the pace in repeat sprinting with a midfield group. Early on in he sprints Johnson was the fastest.
You realise how absurd it is to point out one bit of play as hard evidence when in fact you've proven the point that he can look slow in passages when he's exhausted after a long run or when he runs to the wrong places. Erasmus only took up football full time when he was 16 and his final year of junior football was greatly hindered by Covid. He's still learning positioning compared to other players but he's also still one of the better sprinters over 100 metres at the club and he excels in repeat sprints. You can find the footage and see its fact
The very start of the 3rd Q at the top of the page is one piece of hard evidence for ya
And he looks good too! ;pU all discussing whether erasmus is slow or not reminds me so strongly of the recruiting team’s discussions in moneyball - “sounds so good off the bat when he hits it” “he’s got a bew-di-ful swing” etc
That footage was directly after the half time break, like 59 mins into the videoYou realise how absurd it is to point out one bit of play as hard evidence when in fact you've proven the point that he can look slow in passages when he's exhausted after a long run or when he runs to the wrong places. I've already addressed the 100 metre thing in another post
This is going round in circles now though, he's slow, he shouldn't be a specialist sub, that doesn't mean he can't be useful, there have been many good slow players as others have pointed out.
To be fair you're talking absolute rubbish so I'll drop the conversation for everyone's benefit.. Yep after going on long runs he can occasionally look slow in isolated play so the fact the one incident you are quoting is 59 minutes in means nothing. You should go and watch him train. The idea he is slow is completely absurd if you watch him in repeat sprint drills. That footage was directly after the half time break, like 59 mins into the video

Agreed. It certainly appears as though we haven’t changed much in terms of our style of play.Based off the Intraclub match, we haven't looked to change game style at all. I was just watching the Collingwood Intra highlights and their skill level looks miles ahead of Freo.

Luckily early explosive pace is easier trained than top end speedIt’s fair to comment that Erasmus doesn’t have that initial burst speed. Think of Stephen Hill out of the gates fast but then gets caught by the pack. Erasmus I wouldn't say is slow but he doesn’t have that initial burst speed to get away and create some distance. Over a longer distance say 50-100metres he has good speed.
I remember one GF sprint where Stephen Hill led the field easily at around 20-30metres but was caught by most and finished middle of the pack by the 100. Erasmus would be part of that pack that catches him at the 100.
That initial burst speed is what made SHill one of my favourites. He would burst away create separation then take a bounce or two and deliver i50.
Erasmus has elite endurance and solid speed over the distance. It is different but I wouldn’t call him slow. Brodie actually has decent athletic traits and one of those is ability to get some initial separation. Has a good leap as well. His endurance is rubbish though. So it doesn’t surprise me that he burnt off Erasmus from a pack. But line them up let them run 100 and Erasmus would leave him well behind.
Fair call. He is still finding the pace of AFL for sure. This pre-season he has improved further with a focus on first option. Be it firing out a handball or getting ball to foot quickly and instinctively. This will seem strange but i think both sides of this argument are right. I think Erasmus is actually pretty quick, but he plays “slow”. That is he cruises around and doesn’t drive his legs to get away from stoppages. It’s a common issue with players who dominate at lower levels (which Eramus has as a junior and even at WAFL level) but they try and play at the same pace when they go up a level. Changing the “pace” of how you play is nit easy and is why some players dominate at the lower level but can never transfer it to the higher level
