I wouldn’t have a problem with his long bombs if he’s taking those intercept marks on our defensive 50m line and bombing it straight over the congestion to our half forward line to a 1:1. The fact Aish was taking the kick ins makes me think he’s potentially playing the deep sweeper/goalkeeper role and Ryan may move into the Young interception HB role.

The long bombs will work alright if we create a contest down the line, they will work out great if we can have a couple of players down the line able to mark it and whichever finds themselves between their team mate and the opponent pretends to mark with their hands up towards the ball but are just blocking.

Coming from Luke ‘Bomb’ Ryan.
Would love to have Young and Wagner with the ball. The team played so much better with Wagner wanting to run and carry down the corridor
Interesting to see Ryan himself say he is planning to lower the eyes and hit targets this season. So coaches obviously agree to some extent.

It’s just Ryan takes a great grab. Finds no options. Allows opposition’s defence to set up and then he bombs. By then Jackson has 2 or 3 hanging around him

This place currently reads like it's Eagle supporters commenting on Freo players. Everyone is sinking the boot in. What a sad and depressing forum this is right now.

What a bunch of ****ing mopers.

This group will improve as a group. The defence will look better when the mids win more contests and the forwards mark more contested ball and defend better. The forwards will look great when they organise themselves and the defense attacks the game with dare.

It's not, if they only fixed this one thing... It's all connected. It's not the defenders, mids, or forwards fault. It's the whole team playing as a unit. The defenders can only play quickly if the players up the ground are organised, and they can only defend well if the ball coming in is under pressure.

Everyone blames the person taking the kick ins without analysing whether it's actually the receiver(s) who made the error.

This is seriously the most depressing lead in to a season I can remember. Literally like more than 50% of posts are comments about how shit the players are.

We get it, move the **** on.

So we expecting a Voss announcement after training today?

Pretty sure today is the deadline.
FREMANTLE has provided former Essendon key forward Patrick Voss with an AFL lifeline ahead of the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) deadline on Monday.

The 20-year-old has trained strongly across the pre-season since joining Justin Longmuir's squad at the end of November, kicking four goals in match simulation last weekend to help cement his spot.

None of the top four teams use the long bomb out of defence. It's an old outdated tactic from many years ago that has no place in today's game to be used on a regular basis.

To be fair, he said he was forced by injury to kick shorter.

He's always had the technique for more aggressive kicking he's just too risk averse. Hopefully he opens up because he'll go next level if he starts taking attacking options.

We'll chirp up when the season starts and we're not absolute gash. This is the textbook Freo fan response given the start we had to 2023.

All of them do it.

There should be no surprise that Port looked so much better when Dixon was down the line for the contest.

The issue for us is that the long bomb down the line wasn't being split, we were turning it over too much without the likes of Lobb forcing it over the boundary for a stoppage and reset.

If you're set up for the kick it can work. Carlton came undone doing it start of last season though.

I can tell you now Port handballed and ran the ball out of defense a lot more than they bombed it out of defense. That was literally the main focus of their preseason and something they drilled into the players. That's why they were so good in the first half of the season.

Every team does it but not on a regular basis. It becomes too predictable and easy to counter.

It's honestly been ridiculous this year. We had more positivity when we fell off the cliff under Ross. People are acting like our round 2 game against North last year was the only game we played

Footy is just a game of percentages, we needed the guys at the end of the kick performing better and nothing else needs to change in defense and the game will shift closer to our goal more often, more scores, more wins.

It's marks between the arcs.

I'm loving this pre-season. We're all super pessimistic, neutrals (except select WA media) think we're dog****, our most talented forward since Pav is a plodder apparently and Jackson and Darcy can't work together.

If we are anywhere half decent its going to be so satisfying.

I think we will be ok this year in the end but I am worried about Round 1.

We come up against a Grand Finallist who have already got a game under their belt. How on earth the AFL concocted this rubbish is beyond me. I am chalking that one up as a loss.

The only other thing that concerns me is JLo's timid coaching. The shackles neeed to be removed and let the players take the game on.

The rubberband snap after we beat Brisbane by eight goals and the likes of Neale are yelling at team mates for their impotence in the contest compared to Serong, Brodie and Fyfe will be extreme though. Brace yourself.

Can you all wait until we've actually seen the gameplan against some opposition first before sinking the boots in and going all "doom and gloom" for the year?

Embrace the pessimism.

There's a few. I'm still optimistic for the medium term, I'm just not confident this year is included in that.
I don't know how we'll go, I feel confident that our younger players will continue to improve and step up this year though, I think finals are going to happen.

The thing that annoys me about it is that the big successful clubs are never pessimistic. Pessimism is loser club mentality and perpetuates a cycle of underperformance. Some people seem to enjoy us being shit, and the best way to keep that cycle going is to have a fan base that constantly shits all over the club and abuses the players so they don't enjoy playing together

What the fan base does is irrelevant. Not only that but BF is not representative of the general fanbase anyway. Most casual fans I know always think we're good.

All that matters is the club has the right mindset and competence. We could be sacrificing animals to the old gods or 100% convinced we'll never lose another game and it wouldn't make any difference.

Also, maybe stop by the West Coast forums for some pretty good counter evidence.

IKR. It worked well in 2022 and the back end of 2023. We're not far off it, if it clicks, which it may well do early, then we can beat anyone.

Show which 'big successful clubs are never pessimistic'?

Firstly you used an absolute to make your claim?

Secondly, name the club and I will show you examples, with ease.

It’s kind of a chicken and egg thing really. If we are successful everyone is going to be more positive. But cos we’re shit and have been so for a majority of our history people are pessimistic. I love the club and desperately want them to win, but me being optimistic won’t make it happen.
