I never want to see him get caught on the last line of defence ever again. Dale should also be our designated kick-in taker & Richards back-up.

Caleb should be between the arcs for me, his kicking is so good that we want someone like him delivering it inside 50, but also able to help break the lines by getting it to an open player in a congested midfield

If Caleb plays mid no doubt the opposition mid will be instructed to burst forward at all opportunities. His defensive skills and pace in that regard are a little concerning if we do, as usual, lose the ruck taps.

Still, I want to see him have a crack.

When I saw him go into the middle for his first centre bounce I thought this is interesting, then he got the next two clearances the first resulting in a goal and I was like I’ll have more of that please. I have no doubt he’ll get midfield field minutes this season not sure how much or when but he has the attributes to develop there in the coming years for sure.

Any thoughts from track watchers on how Arty Jones and Luke Cleary are going? Haven’t heard much about them.

It’s a big year for Jones. He looked a fair way off it last year. Has he honed his skills a bit? Winning more of the ball? Bulked up at all?

Cleary looked composed in the few senior games he played. That is a good sign but he needs to continue improving if he is to get more games when everyone is fit.

He certainly could have a similar impact to Papley in the middle. Maybe we’re looking at a Weightman/Daniel swap in the midfield and forward line this season? It certainly would be a different look.

Bev (or McCartney) pulled a similar move with Dahlhaus to great effect. Weightman could supply a similar point of difference, shake things up a bit as our starry midfield ages and becomes predictable.

Weightman spent a bit of time in the midfield at u18s. He'll always be primarily a forward, but changing things up to give him a run through the midfield can't hurt once in a while.

I like specialist forwards staying forward in this day and age, and Cody is as good as it gets up forward. But more than happy for him to have a few runs through there from time to time to change things up for us and him if he’s struggling to get in the game etc as we know forward pocket can be a lonely position at times and you can’t star there all the time.

But I hope he keeps his focus on becoming the best small forward in the league and kicking bulk goals rather than any any meaningful shift to midfield in coming years

I've only been to one session. I thought both looked fine, not a huge leap but on track with another year of development. Jones still looks like his brain seems to be moving faster than his body at times. I can see what he's trying to pull off but he's rushing a lot. Needs to work on his basics and calm down a bit. Cleary is more of the same as last year so far. Clean disposal, safe kick, good hands. A lot of our more defensive drills are based on manic pressure and 1v1 with our talls so he hasn't been able to show a lot there yet.

They're both in the same group as most of our depth players where it'll just come down to who can prove themselves in a proper VFL match.

Im not sure that the club actually knows what to do with or how to develop him. He seems to spend most of his time inside and chasing the ball when one would expect him to play an outside role. I suspect that this is to cover up the deficiencies he has when the ball is in his hands. He's as far away from a debut as anybody on the list.

You nailed it Norm with regards to his issues with ball in hand however he did attack the ball and took a couple of marks including one very good contested pack mark. And as you say seems a long way of it for now.

Indeed he did.

I don't think his attack on the ball has ever been questioned by anybody who has watched him.

Its what comes next where the problem lies.

Don't worry by the time the season starts they will have trained that habit out of him and he'll be missing set shots from 10m out like the rest of them.

Despite kicking incredibly straight against us in the game we played late season, he has been a pretty poor set shot to my eyes during his career. Especially from close range.

I don’t think we will need to train him there!

I like Weightman getting some midfield minutes. The problem with most small forwards in the league, is inconsistancy and not finding the ball enough. It can only help him more. Plus I always think all players should have a second string to their bow. There will be games not suited to small forwards or where they cannot get into the game. Having the ability to play some midfield minutes helps with match ups, tactics and getting players back into the game.

Yeah he’s pretty good from my memory, and from outside 50 really good. Seems, like many, to be prone to the odd shank from close range though.

I think we forget that goal kicking is pretty poor league wide beyond a few dead eyes. I know it seems we struggle with it every week and everyone kicks them out of their ass against us but would be interesting to see whether we’re actually that far off the league average or if it’s just because we watch us more…

Mate of mine who is a Hawthorn senior recruiting scout and does a lot of oppo analysis has watched a few of our training sessions this year and reviewed a lot of our tapes from the past three years. He says a fit Bontempelli is the best AFL player bar none and that if this pre-season is an indication of what we can expect from Bontempelli in 2023, then we will witness a very rare talent at the peak of his powers. According to him, The Bont is rated by many other clubs as the very best of the best players in the AFL.

That's it! I'm loading up on the Bont Brownlow/Bulldogs Flag double!
I love hearing that shit... even though we all know it - it's good to hear it from other clubs.

Bont is the best player I've seen in a Bulldogs jumper (going back to the early 80's)

There’s the old adage that ‘talls take time’ and The Sir Bont plays tall, I know players get taller every year but he’s 6ft 4, he’d have been a key forward 30 years ago. He relies on brute force more than speed . These will be his prime years .
