I just can't see us playing 8 talls. The ball would rebound so quickly out of our forward line that it'd be ridiculous
I don't see why. 3 tall forwards (as we've been doing of late - includes Naughton and Jamarra who are pretty mobile), a ruck, 3 tall defenders and 1 tall on the bench to fill gaps as players rest.

What would be so different about that?

I really don’t get this argument, there’s literally 18 blokes on the field? Most clubs have at least 7 talls, we’re talking spread across the whole field, a 100m oval & on the bench. The game is a rolling scrum at the best of times with huge numbers around the ball.

As soon as a club surpasses that magic 7 number and swaps a (shit, probably 22nd picked) small person sitting on the bench for a tall person sitting on the bench all hell breaks loose and we can no longer run or pressure anywhere on the field 😂

If it was 8 Rory Lobbs / Sam Darcys, then I'd get the nervousness around 8 talls. But JUH and Naughton are both fairly agile players and, particularly in Naughton's case, can apply good pressure when the ball hits the deck. There would be one tall on the bench at most times throughout the game anyway. Provided our smalls and midfielders apply enough pressure and position themselves correctly, I don't think we'd have anything to worry about.

You are both right that we played 7 talls towards the end of last year, but that ignores a fee key points.
  • we were among the worst in the league at defending on transition - a part of the game where playing an extra tall will likely not assist.
  • other than Gardner all 7 talls spent decent stints on the bench. Darcy and JUH playing only about 75% game time. In effect we were only playing 6 talls on the field for the majority of the game. If we play a 7th that means either more talls on the ground at one time, or 2 on the bench.
  • the talls used last year commonly included Cordy whose place will be replaced by Lobb and/or Jones depending on if Cordy played forward or back. Jones may have similar attributes, but Lobb certainly doesn't.

I think 8 talls would be more likely if we had a range of quick small forwards to complement them, but we're likely to use guys like Mclean, West, Garcia etc forward and while they aren't slouches, they aren't a grade quick smalls.

Disagree. Really depends on how they're used. If the ball is moved quick enough then its 1v1's and we have some great smalls in McLean, Flea, West etc. If however, we get a stoppage we can utilise 3 talls to create a wall with another deep inside 50. Eg: Darcy, Naughts and Marra in the wall, Lobb deep and Timmy contending the ruck. Put a heap of smalls/mids to add pressure and force a dump kick.

Granted this is a utopian view but if the teams hungry enough.

Really don’t understand not playing a proper preseason game this week, surely we’d want as much real (or closer to it than an intraclub anyway) game time as possible considering our likely new structure.

Wouldn’t travel for it but surely could have arranged something with a Melb club early days
Did they not say it’s because of the camp? I suspect they had no takers for a Ballarat game

In regards to defending on transition, the issue I have with this point is that we were awful at it even with a smaller side, in games where we played Gardner + Cordy (undersized) down back, and Naughton + JUH + Khamis (undersized) forward. This is something that will require a change in structure and our approach to defence, regardless of how many talls we play. Having 7 on field shouldn't be an issue if we aren't making the same mistakes we did last year. Geelong at times had all of De Koning, Kolodjashnij, Henry, Blicavs, Stanley, Hawskins and Cameron on field at the same time, not to mention Stewart (190cm) who plays the tall interceptor role.

I agree with your last point though. Geelong enabled a tall side thanks to having smalls who were either quick, or applied huge pressure (Close, Stengle, Atkins, Miers, etc.). We can't really throw Darcy into the side without making other changes to how we structure up. Ideally Baker helps with the pace/pressure side of things, and it's a big reason why I like having Garcia and McLean in the side. My personal preference is 7 talls total, it's just hard to predict what happens with Darcy round 1

Honestly can't see us losing a game this season. We actually have too many good players to fit in the team.
We'll lose one at some stage. No team has ever gone through undefeated and it's tough to see that occurring in this day and age.

Some bookmakers are already paying out on Dogs premiership. Teams like your Geelongs and your Magpies aren’t training for 2023, they’re working out how to combat the Bulldogs in 2024

They're wasting their time. I can't see us losing a game in 2024 either. In fact I can't see us losing one before 2027 or maybe 2026 at the earliest.

Is Busslinger likely to be ready for the start of the VFL season or is he expected to miss the first few weeks rehabbing the shoulder?

Please play JJ even if 10% fit. Still better than VANDERMEER!!
VDM was pretty good early on. Had a number of bad injuries and that set him back quite a bit. I would not discount him at this stage. He can make many regret statements of him not being all that good. And not to mention that marvellous point in the semi final against Brisbane in Brisbane. very smart play

Hey, just tried to register to watch the live stream of the intra club match on the weekend and I got a message saying registrations have closed.

Surely they aren’t limiting how many people can actually watch the live stream? Why would they have closed registrations? Does anyone know what’s going on with that and has anyone else got the same message when they tried to register?

I was going to call the club tomorrow and see what they had to say. Because restricting access to a live stream of a pre season match seems a bit weird.

I haven’t registered yet because my PC is being repaired. I get it back today. So have I missed out? 🙁
And why do you have to register? Can’t they just post the link? I’m sure that’s what they’ve done in the past.

Bit strange if they’ve stopped registrations already, but I’m sure we can share the link in here once we have receive it for those that missed out

I just went in and tried again and it worked fine. I’m not sure why it gave me that message last night that registrations had closed.

Not sure why we need to register to be honest, other than maybe the club are hoping to get some details of supporters who aren’t yet members so they can approach them about becoming members? I’m not sure

Maybe they are trying to make it an exclusive for members or trying to keep out the spies.

Have you received a link yet? I registered the other day and am still waiting. And yes I've checked the junk mail.
