Media gig will pay better than footy anyway. Let's be honest, this is all it is about. One of the most attention seeking players in the history of the game.

A good player, a good leader of men, a good diver. Any appraisal beyond this defies reality. He wasn't generational and he wasn't special. Just good, playing the easiest role in the backline which allows good to seem great.

If not for the lesser praised heroes of the Tigers backline he wouldn't have experienced the success he has. They won it without him validating this assessment.

He, like Danger, have been prepping themselves for a media gig for a while now this is no surprise. I'll be shocked if he doesn't announce some sort of return someday - it is in his nature to try to make the back page.

He is a good lesson to any player - if you want to be remembered as great - get in good with the commentators- just ask Jake 'bog average' Lever who is described as a near-deity by commentators.

Awesome career for an awesome player. Really weird to do all that rehab and pushing for the gf only to retire this late in the year but footy isn’t everything.

Lucky Richmond have the greatest recruiters in all of history and will be able to find a full back Marlion Pickett.

I don't think the rehab part is weird. If you get injured at work as he did, it's the responsibility of the company/club to get you as close to 100% again as possible. For me it would have been weird for him to walk away from having first class rehab and medical facilities on tap.

He's a Jehovah, so it probably means you'll see him on your doorstep soon asking to talk about Jebus

I remember being 13 when I was home alone and a mother and daughter team of Jehovah's witnesses knocked on my front door and cornered me for 40 minutes talking about Jesus. I remember being much more interested in how attractive the daughter was than Jesus.

Interesting though how few champion defenders of this era there are.

Guys like Hurley, McGovern, Talia, Grimes are seen as the next best and although they’re good players, they aren’t absolutely top tier defenders. Just the best in a weak field.

Contextualises the number of AA guernseys Rance has won.

Defenders don't really play one on one the way they used to, the role has changed to be more zonal and team defence oriented. I've little doubt that most of the above would have been top tier defenders in a different era still.

I'll always remember Rance single handedly defending Richmond's goal line as if his life depended on it. He was routinely delivering superhuman performances as the team crumbled around him before the club's 2017 resurgence. Was a colossus on gf day as well.

There are numerous key defenders who've had better, more consistent careers but if I could choose one player to have on my side for four quarters of footy at their absolute best I'd pick Rance over all of them

Faith is such a weird thing to say you are focusing on. What does that mean exactly? Going to church more often, praying more often, hitting himself with a whip for impure thoughts more often?
“I’m quitting football to grow the relationship with my imaginary friend”.

Same same, but different.

And you are most likely a leftie hypocritical communist. Let’s go back centuries and start discriminating again against those that follow a religion/are different!!!!!! No one can pick and choose when to be tolerant ...... or you are a Harry Hypocrite.

Best of luck to Rance for his next journey in life whatever that maybe.
If you follow religion and aren’t telling others who aren’t what they should be doing, or limiting job/ education/ life opportunities then you should be ok.

The current climate and the religious discrimination bill makes the agnostic very sceptical/ fearful of what shit the religious will bring

Good on him. I personally don't understand the religion angle but it's important to him and there's more to life than footy. Bloody good defender. Good luck Alex for your next chapter.
