I relise we are far from favorites but do you honestly think we are any chance of comming top 4/winning a flag if we can hit form/have a good injury run?

I have doubts. On paper our best 22 is pretty strong but going by last year when we play the very best sides (Saint Kilda/Adelaide, a inform/injury free Melbourne/Geelong) we are simply outclassed.

If we dont have any kind of real chance when do you see us having a crack? 2007/2008? Remember - Richardson, Kellaways, Gaspar types wont be around in 4/5 years.

Cheers :)

btw - If Terry does indeed sign Fev its clear he thinks we have a chance of a flag over the next handful of years (in the Gaspar/Richo generation).

I just hope we dont lose Schultz.

yes considering sydney won it this year and the eagles where runner up i see us as some chance..

getting fev into the lineup changes everything, last year we had richo as the main go to forward, browny the smaller type, most teams lined up with The best backman on richo

last year against the saints for example maguire played on simmonds and killed him, fev would change everything, eg against the saints Hudghton takes richo then maguire to fevola and a fit? penny takes the 3rd tall eiether stafford/knobel/simmonds/schulz/pattison/hall whoever it may be. last year vs the saints they killed us with 2-3 players going up against richo. with fev there it draws at least another 2 players to him, possibley leaving big space for a stafford type player or get browny more isolated. even the crumbs of tambling, krakouer, rodan and pettifer would be awesome with fev down there.

to me ottens was more a ruck/forward, simmonds isnt a CHF's arseh*le he is a ruckman, staff is a 3rd tall up forward at best, would have a lot of height advantage of most players he would get.

We only missed the finals this year becuase of Browny, throw him back in there with fev if we can get him then we are a big shot. if we dont have a crack while we have richo, johnson, gaspar, kellerway, then we wont be aiming for a flag tilt untill well after 2010

I agree having Fev in the forward line changes everything. He will score his fair share of goals (be it 40/50/60, whatever) but then that takes alot of presure of Richo who could even get the 2nd best defender. Simmonds/Stafford will benfiit alot from being a true 3rd forward rather have CHF/FF playing on the 3rd best tall defender rather than the 2nd.

The trickle down effect.

My heart says tweaking the current list (Rodan & Brown fit, Pattison/Tambo/Raines and co. stepping up, maybe Fev in etc.) can make as a true top 4 team if we have a good run but after watching us against the best last year the head says im not so sure.

fev is good mates with newman and i hear tucky aswell as being pretty close to browny and richo through the footy show could bring out a bit more from a few players, we will have to give up a pick most likely 8 and a decent player i think in schulz to get him tho it could haunt us for years but i think it would benefit it us, maybe we could get him for a steal and that pick maybe plus eiether knobel or a package of tivendale, hilton, maybe even hyde? we havta give somthen up to get somthing

With Side Show Bob in our forward line we'd have enough tall timber to beat the floods and be a major contender. Lets just hope Collo has a love for the Victorian teams and we get him without taking to much damage.

maybe even hyde?
No

if our young midfielders take the next step and a host of other factors go right, then yes. cogs will be better, tuck will be better, lids bling and meyer will be better. a lot depends on d-rod and browns return from long term injury if they go well and we do get fev then watch out.

We will go backwards in 2006.

Not wanting to be too pessimistic, but I'm with you jezza. I think we'll be bottom 4 next year, after over-achieving this year under the new coach. That won't necessarily be a bad thing. The Doggies were there for a number of years, and I'm tipping them top 4 next year, with one of the most exciting teams going around.

We'll be in that position in another 2-3 years when most of the youngsters get more than 50 games under their belts.

Backline consistency ?

ye have little faith in our backline there oxx. I for one kind of rate the tiger's backline. We have Gas that consistently takes the best forward and consistently negates them, we have chubba who consistently does his job on his man, we have Newman who consistently gets the job done, although alot here kind of hang him on 2 bad ones in what? 3 years, like give the kid a break. Then you add the ever improving and starting to become damaging Rayzor, and we aitn that bad. Our biggest problem is purely in our midfield. Our best are good, but they have to rest and when they do, when the second string unit is in the mix, they cannot maintain at least a status quo, with the top sides' second string unit, needless to say get blown away by the top sides' A-unit.
In fact, even through the darkest days of Spud, our backline would hold the fort heroically in the face of a barrage and only because that barrage would never subside, would it capitulate.
We need to make hay while the sun shines, i.e. capitalise on the one stat that people overlook to often, we get it inside 50, with our A-unit midfield, enough times but we never captialise.
ALthough touted on another board as a "darksider" i am pretty mush an optimist in that, we are, i would say, 3 players out- 3 players in from really making some big waves. The 3 players out that have been there and consistently been unaccountable, consistently turned over the ball, consistently not strived for the 1%enters, consistently misread the play, are Chaffey, Tivendale & to a lesser extent Hyde. Remove these 3 and replace them with positive output type players, and if it happens add a FEV, and FEV comes to the party with say, 65 goals, the tigers are a real chance in any game, granny included.

if we keep shulz you'll see the most improved if not all australian chb next year. Just a bold prediction
i.e. rutten

i left out the sarge because me thinks he is the one that is going to be taking the tram down royal pde to get to training next year. ;)

Well I think that our list certainly has the potential to but whether we do is another story. It also all depends on how we go in the trade + drafts. If we can get Browny up and firing then I think we defently might because last year before Brown was injured we were going very well. And although 12th position may not look very good on paper I thought that last year was a very good year for the club. Brett Deledio will hopefully be a star again this year and play in the midfield for the whole year. If we can get Richo kicking straight and get Fevola than that would have our fowardline covered. Our backline may need a little work but we should be alright in that area. Some of our youngsters will proberbly get more of a run like Polo, Meyer and Raines so they will need to step up a little bit.

Anyway anything can happen in sport, look at West Tigers for example, so I guess we will just have to wait and see.

^ True but you still can't be 100% sure he is going to kick it when he if 15 out. He missed a couple of easy ones last year but yeah it has certainly improved.

If our midfield can get some depth and keep the pressure up for 4 quarters it goes along way to preventing the opposition kicking goals.

How Schultz goes at CHB will be important.

Isn't Hall our CHB ?

I hope not. He is a good player to have as a tall in the backline on a resting ruckman, but not as a fulltime CHB.

Jay Schultz should be our CHB for now and 10 years down the track. I see our improvement coming from a settled backline: Gaspar, Kellaway, Schultz, Bowden, Newman, Hartigan. That to me should be our starting six with Thursfield, Hyde, Chaffey, Hall, Moore the backups. The best teams have a solid, settled backline with 3 strong bodies.

If we trade Schultz it will be our biggest mistake. He is more important to us then Brendan Fevola. I tell you what, if we can trade pick 8 for Fevola in the end I would be rapt. Gaspar, Schultz, Coughlan, Richardson and Fevola would be one of the best spines in the competition.

So in conclusion, we trade Schultz and pick up Fevola, we remain a mediocre team. We trade Schultz and get no Fevola, we go backwards. We get Fevola and dont lose Schultz, a finals spot becons...maybe more.
