Before WWE returned to Australia in 2002 for the Global Warning Tour event in Melbourne at Colonial Stadium in 2002, WCW were over here 2 years earlier for 2 back to back episodes of Monday Nitro on October 9th and October 16th in 2000.
I've been watching WCW from that year and just watched both episodes recently. They were your standard episodes of Nitro from the era. There were only a few times where anyone mentioned anything about Australia in their promos. Lance Storm makes reference to some mess-up with the gymnastics bar at the 2000 Olympics as he has Elix Skipper measure the height of the ring ropes. Scott Steiner does the "Aussie, Aussie Aussie" chant, but replaces the "oy oy oy" with "ass ass holes". It was pretty lame. Shane Douglas gloats about the Americans kicking our asses the last time they came down here. Just your usual amount of references to the town they're in that you'd get on a typical weekly episode of RAW or Nitro from the era. I was hoping for a little more.
This would've been the first time seeing Goldberg, Kevin Nash, Sting, Ric Flair, Booker T, Scott Steiner and Jeff Jarrett at a wrestling event in Australia. I think they've all been back, multiple times, for WWE tours except for Goldberg and Sting. The only big stars I can think of that didn't make this tour are Sid, Lex Luger, Buff Bagwell and DDP. I think Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Macho Man and Scott Hall had all either left the company earlier that year or they hadn't been on TV in a long time.
It sucks that Flair not only didn't have a match but didn't even get to do a promo. He only came out briefly to save David Flair from a beating by Mike Awesome at the Brisbane show and then to sit at the commentary table at ringside for a match not saying anything at the next show in Melbourne. The Aussie crowd loved Flair when he came out at both shows, so they must've been disappointed he didn't end up doing anything.
Anyone have any memories of these shows? Did any of you get to go to either of them or know anyone who did?
