The second season in our series will be the up-and-down season of 2002. Geelong's formline went 2L-3W-4L-7W-2L-1W-3L.

A stark example of the topsy-turvy nature of Geelong's form was the 122-point win over St Kilda at Kardinia Park in Round 4 (with Lord kicking six and Riccardi five), only to fall across the line against the same mob four months later by a solitary point after not scoring in the final quarter.

The run of seven consecutive wins was golden, starting with the famous win over Carlton under the roof in Round 11. A previously mundane game had Geelong coasting home with a 38-point lead and only 12 minutes to play. However Carlton clicked into gear remarkably, and two contentious umpiring decisions awarding late goals to Lappin (a deliberate out of bounds by Milburn and a ridiculous 50-metre penalty against Rooke) saw Carlton lead with 26 seconds remaining. Ball in the centre and Chapman charged off the line, causing a spillage which led to Clarke hitting Riccardi on the chest with his left. Siren went and Riccardi floated through the winner, with Wiggins claiming the kick was touched.

A great win came against eventual grand finalists Collingwood a month later, when Kingsley, Mooney and Johnson kicking four each and Steven King dominating in the ruck saw the Cats home by five goals.

The run came to an end on a fiery day at Kardinia Park, when Geelong had 12 more shots at goal than Adelaide however still managed to lose.

I remember Geelong had a chance to sneak into the finals with a win in Round 22 against Hawthorn, however Crawford in his 200th saw the Hawks ruin the Cats' party once again.

What are your memories of 2002?

I remember being at the Carlton game and not being able to stop shaking in that last ten minute period. Remember the almost unspeakable level injustice after Lappin took the dive to earn the 50 and goddamn umpires and it just wasn't fair.

Extraordinary last quarter. I just remember thinking that this was another "typical Geelong" performance where they broke your heart after looking comfortable winners at 3/4 time. Although the Lappin free was a joke (there were a couple of others too from memory) this was a good example of why Geelong fans had that attitude of defeatism for so long (even in the 2007 GF my brother thought PA could still win it going into the last quarter!!).

Possibly the best of David Clarke's shank kicks in his career too.

Brought home a new kitten the morning the streak.Boy do I love that cat 2 premierships already she's only 8 years old so put us down for 2 or3 more flags yet.
Just loved the way they moved the ball around in those 7 games, flashy stuff.

ps wish it would stop raining up here im getting rsi.
Did you call her Riccardi?

I remember going to the Carlton game with a couple of Carlton fans. They were quiet for three quarters, started finding their voice in the last term, went off their faces when Lappin was given that extremely soft 50m penalty, but were silent again after Riccardi wobbled through the goal from 50m. :D That was the first Geelong-Carlton game after the Milburn-SOS incident, and the boos when ever Milburn got the ball were extremely loud.

I remember the following week's game against Sydney too. Paul Williams kicked 2 goals in a minute at the start of the last quarter to put the Swans four goals up, but Geelong hit back hard. I can remember King snapping a goal out of a boundary throw in, and Charlie Gardiner snapping the winner from a tight angle deep into time on.

I also remember the Round 14 game against the Eagles which was played in wet and windy conditions. I remember at one stage David Wirrpunda was lining up for goal at the Hickey Stand end about 20m out directly in front, and as he kicked it, a huge gust of wind blew across the ground and blew the ball across the face of goal. Amazing stuff.

Sorry I don't have the computer skills to post links but any one interested in seeing the last 12 minutes of that game can google( peter riccardi )and watch it there.well worth the effort.:footy:

I was in europe during the 2nd half of the season and couldnt believe the winning streak we were on, i didnt believe friends that would tell me from home we won week after week so i'd try and find an internet cafe on the greek islands to confirm!

Fast forward to rnd 22 and im on on flight home as the cats v hawks game is on, horrible not knowing whats going on, finally arrive in melbourne still none the wiser only to get the hun and the bad news. Was tempted to extend my stay but the lure of a final series proved too much, isnt hindsigh a wonderful thing!

The no1 thing i remember of 2002 was missing Riccardi's last kick of the game v Carlton.:eek:

Didn't the coaching staff miss it too? IIRC, Bomber said after the game he and the assistant coaches heard the siren and went to leave the box when he heard a roar, and looked back and saw we'd actually won. :D

This was also the season that Ablett and Bartel debuted in a loss to Essendon at night at the MCG in Round 1.

And of course the VFL team, a combination of aging veterans and stars of the future, won the premiership.

Nice photo of Ablett there....Caracella, now a coach at Geelong (?still) and Ben Graham, still punting in the NFL.
And Ablett playing for an AFL club called Gold Coast Suns. Would have been doing well to get one of those three predictions right in 2002.

Nostrodamus, a crystal ball, a deck of Tarot cards and 'Paul' the World Cup predicting octopus couldn't have made that call.

2002, wasn't that the year David Clarke jnr was a top 5 B&F with us, or 2001. Everybody else has mentioned our bipolar form. Not sure why Clarke went off. He started amazingly, quick, lots of possessions, some sprayed, but as time went on, lost ALL confidence and appeared to be one of those who truly lost his ability.

I do recall vividly standing up the back of a stand at the dome and being hugged by a complete stranger, male as well, after Riccardi's goal.

If David Clarke is top 5 in our B&F in 2011, then we are in more trouble than any of us could imagine....

Can remember our first win for the season against the Kangaroos (I think that was it). Lung said after the game that it was so good to have a win.. Those were the days, hey?
Can also remember seeing all the new kids on our list and not really knowing anything about them but watching them show glimpses of what was to come in 5 or so years time...
Wasn't that also the year that Kent Kingsley nearly snagged the Coleman??
Jeez 2002 was a couple of days ago now wasn't it?

I had no interest in watching the club play at this stage. Not sure when I lost interest. Maybe 98 - 04
But we had seats in the medallion club so I saw them a fair bit.

I was in the bar behind the glass when Riccardi kicked that goal. Gee the carlton supporters were giving some stick before it. Not that it bothered me because I had no emotional investment in the game.

When was the year that the ball was handballed sideways to Biz who kicked a torp from inside the square that missed by a bees in the last seconds of the game?

Against the hawks I think and we lost by a few points. Now that was a good game.

2000 against North, Bomber's first loss.

A couple of things from that.

Once again chappy does the work that results in the ball being cleared.
Was that 50 a result of Milburn mouthing off?

Was a good solid year, but we were certainly middle of the pack and would have been lucky to make the finals.

The streak was good, but we were incredibly well served by the fixture, as we kept coming up against teams who had played at subi the week before
