What do people think of the concept of rep footy? I noticed in the record last week some bloke saying that all players should be striving to play for the SFL against the Riddell league? Is he fair dinkum? How could you possibly convince gun players like Jayden Attard, Gav Vassallo, Ash Roberts, Daniel Ward or Myles Quinn that a game versus Riddell is worth playing on their only weekend off. Not only that but they will have to travel there and it will probably be freezing cold. Why would clubs want to send their players to a mickey mouse game like this? To promote the league or improve its reputation, you have to be kidding! The SFL have set themselves up for a failure again beacuse no one will want to play as a result they will field a second string side and get pumped. Then the pundits again will say that the SFL stand for the Sh1t Football League.

Who wouldn't wanna play rep footy??? i would think it would be an honour to be selected in the best 22 of the league. The only people who wouldn't wanna play are the mercenaries of the league i would think.

Anyone care to pick a side? Off the top of my head...

Backs Cotter (Sts) Dewar (Dogs) Evangelista (Clays)
Half Backs M. Shalders (Chelt) McKinnon (Chelt) Ward (Sts)
Centres Horler (Mordialloc) Roberts (Chelsea) Harris (Sts)
Half Forwards Barnes (Dogs) Tasiyan (Sts) Poyas (Sts)
Forwards Vassallo (Springvale) Silver (St Kilda) Beasy (Chelsea)
Rucks Ott (Chelt) Mercoulia (Dogs) Rafferty (St Pauls)
Interchange Walsh (Chelsea) Dunne (Chelt) McIntyre (Dogs) Lavars (Dingley)

Apologies to Tooronga, only team I haven't seen this year. This is probably a combination of reputation and form. Hard to pick, I'm sure Ive missed some, but think it's a reasonable side. Anyone want to have a go?

I could understand why people who have played AFL or VFL rep footy would not be super motivated to play for the SFL instead of having a week off is my point.

I know Ward is one of the best in the League but it looks like Saturday was his first game, shouldn't we be rewarding guys for their form not on their pay packet?

SFLObserver- Interesting to see you didn't have Bruno in your team? The bloke has been getting a lot of attention on forums here, you don't rate him?

Hi there Rara,

Yes rate him highly, along with a lot of other players, but there are only so many spots! Very hard to pick this side after four rounds.

I'll take the bait as well....based on talent not just form....

B: McHenry (Clay) Martin (Chelt) Roberts (CH)
HB: Ward (SK) Marasco (SP) Johnstone (SK)
C: McIntyre (SP) Mercoulia (SP) Bruno (SK)
HF: Poyas (SK) Dunne (Chelt) Walsh (CH)
F: Vassallo (SD) Silver (SK) Beasy (CH)
Foll: Quinn (SK) Rafferty (SP) Cole (Chelt)

Not an easy gig!!

It's not a bad point but other leagues seem to be able to get ex-AFL players to play. I'm not sure I get the rest of it though .... is the league not supposed to play interleague? or play someone other than Riddell? or play somewhere where it's not cold in winter?

Do you have a solution or just want an excuse to pot the SFL admin, which seems to be a bigfooty sport of it's own? Riddell is probably not the ideal opponent but if the ammos don't want to play SFL any more you have to start somewhere.

At least we are talking about something other than StKC's recruiting strategy for once which can only be a good thing.

My point is to start a debate about the merits of a)playing interleague at all and b) under what circumstances. I personally don't think you should have an interleague game just for the sake of it. It would need to be against the right team at the right venue, otherwise your so called show piece game ends up being the opposite because it doesn't accuratley reflect the quality of your competition, because the best players wont play.

I note the Springy Districts sight is congratulating their players selected in the squad. Any chance the league could publicise it on their website? Also do clubs know if their top players would be ruled in or out?

It would be interesting to see if the league has a mechanism to oblige selected players to be available. I agree that it is not worth doing if you don't get your best team (or close to it) on the park because it de-values the 'cap' and the game.

In general, representative footy across the metro competitions does seem to be a bit haphazard. When you compare to the VCFL which actually runs a 'Championship' each year with promotion/relegation. I would be really interested in seeing maybe a 2 tier Championship involving (for arguments sake, I am guessing at levels of competition a bit):

Tier 1
EFL
Ammos
MPNFL (Peninsula) - basically a metro comp these days
EDFL

Tier 2
SFL
WRFL
NFL
Riddell

Round 1 - fixtures drawn out of a hat, Round 2 - winners v winners for Cup/promotion, Losers v losers for relegation/final pacings.

It would put some meaning into the games themselves with some pride on the line for each league.

How would that go?

Good comment but i think one of the main issues with Interleague is that it takes away the only week off the players have. I think leagues should look at having a pre season carnival and instead of interleague having a champions league, top two teams from each league play off against each other. Every team plays practice matches so you wouldn't have people pulling out.

Amy suprise inclusions / exclusions. This is the League list of invited players for Rep footy..... Discuss?

Couldn't agree more Freak! The League will put their own spin on this as to why 3 players from a division 3 club get an invite, whilst 1 gets an invite from a division 1 club....

Don't want to offend anyone here but it's very simple. Division 1 players are BETTER players than division 3 players. So invite 95% of division 1 players and the very few from the other 2 divisions eg Jamieson who are capable of mixing it with the skill level of the div 1 players and close the book!

Some of the names are a joke and the SFL would be wasting their time sending a few of them down to do any sort of training. Sorry SFL Observer couldn't sneak in on the list of Div2 nominees.
I thought my brother would've got a gig as well??

I think my reply has been canned..not sure how! Can't be arse rewriting it either! Agree wholeheartedly with you.

Ha! Bit stiff there Freaky you obviously put a fair bit of steam into that one!
To paraphrase you (correct me if I'm wrong): Some unlucky ommissions, a large number of very fortunate inclusions, questions raised over whether including so many Div 2/3 players in the squad devalues the concept.

I agree, however I think you could pick close (emphasise 'close') to the best side from that squad though. Will be interesting to see what final selection approach is applied.

Does anyone know what we should expect from Riddell League? I have heard we should be stronger but would be interested if anyone here has seen/played in the comp?

some of these div 3 players have come from b and c section ammos, which lets face it is a league that div 1 southern clubs wouldnt win a game in. dont be suprised if a few hammers boys make the 22.

Batt and Cave both played reserves in C grade Ammos!

The top 4 div 1 clubs wouldnt lose a game in C section and would be middle of the road B section teams.

The Hammers boys wont make it past the first training session.
