Meet the clearance king Rhys Mathieson
THERE'S no real secret to the way Rhys Mathieson influences games, because for the past three years the midfielder has been as consistent as any draft prospect.
The Geelong Falcons product has been a constant in the Victorian talent pathway since making the under-12s state team, progressing all the way through to be named a back-to-back All Australian this year.

Parish and Mathieson's perfect double act
RHYS Mathieson slowly reverses his car into the freezing water as Darcy Parish unloads the attached 'tinnie' boat into Geelong's Corio Bay.
The local teenagers are familiar with the area: the last time they came down for a couple of hours of fishing, Mathieson's car almost got bogged in the sand.
The time before that, a little way over to the left, they had a day out and reeled in about 30 fish in an afternoon. And just behind them, inside the gates at the nearby Geelong Grammar School, they met for the first time six years ago.

Rhys Mathieson’s footy talents are no joke
RHYS Mathieson’s footy strength is his innate ability to hunt the ball.
But when the Sherrin bounced towards the fence during a lunchtime kick at school this year the ferocious onballer applied his skills laterally.
Mathieson and his mates found a dead mouse, scooped it up in a lunch bag and dropped it into top-five prospect Darcy Parish’s locker.
“Except it somehow ended up in another mate’s locker and stayed there for the weekend,” dual All-Australian Mathieson said at draft combine.
“We got back on Monday and the whole locker room was stinking and was tipped upside down pretty much.
“It was revolting, I swear I could taste the smell that’s how bad it was. Oh, and it was actually a dead rat — but it’s all just fun and games.”

RHYS Mathieson describes it as his “tunnel vision”.
When the footy spills loose of the contest, the 18-year-old contested ball king doesn’t see anything else. He just has to come away with the footy.
There’s also his swagger. Not a swagger of overconfidence, but a swagger of purpose and the strong self-belief needed to make the grade at AFL level.
As talent manager Michael Turner points out, he’s the most competitive player the Geelong Falcons have produced since Luke Hodge and Jimmy Bartel.
