Pity some people don't see this.
How many flags has Melb won with Gawn?
We won 3 flags with Nank not being a hit out King.
He's worth more than just hit outs.
I think we all know what Nank offers other than hit outs, but with our bolstered midfield, he is less likely to give us first use.
It's a valid talking point because it's safe to assume that we want to evolve our game plan to be more clearance focused.

Its match simulation, not even a practice match and the only thing the "Toiga Army" can glean from the simulation is anti-Toiga umpring.

Keep it classy Richmond.

Yeah Mansell seems to be ahead of him. Probably because he's more of your typical defensive pressure forward than Cumbo is.

Has Cotchin taken Cumberland's spot up forward? If so, I'm not sure that's the right move.
You'd bloody hope not. Cumberland is a very exciting forward prospect.

Positives.
Taranto- elite. His work at stoppages into offensive spread is going to be pretty exciting to watch. His tackling is ferocious aswell. Should have had 4 goals. Hit the post twice.

Hopper- silky and composed. Created three chances through class. Huge pick up and is going to be icing on the cake.

Prestia- everywhere. Looked as free as I’ve seen him in a pre season game ever. Was all over the ground and slotted a beauty from the boundary. So smart around stoppages.

Judson Clarke- gut runner. His running availing was on show today and showed his creativity with hand or foot. He’s going to be pushing himself into the best 22.

Nankervis- standard bank game. I’ve been one in the past to wonder whether big Nank might just be a step off. But to me today he showed once again why he’s one of the clubs most important players. His aggression was outstanding. He physically imposed himself time after time (yes gave away a couple of free kicks) and had kangaroo mids rushing handballs to play hot potato. He gets back and helps the defence so often and it’s invaluable to that team.

Dusty- don’t have a lot to say apart from he was a Ferrari in 2nd gear today and still kicked two of the better goals of the game.

Negatives
Transition defence- opened up a few times off half forwrd and kangas showed that they will improve their ball movement. Grimes, vlastuin, Rioli and balta all fairly quiet but not bad.

Free kicks- undisciplined tackles and clumsy mistakes is just standard ingredient for some of our players. Mansell and nankervis are highly aggressive players but at times make silly mistakes.

Overall was a bit scrappy due to the wind. But some massive positives and no injuries from what I saw.
Good post.
The thing I noticed most is that Hopper in the middle allowed Taranto and Prestia to do their thing. He won’t be flashy, but he opens up other players to get off the leash as a result of him being there. Prestia was the obvious example. Probably just playing at exactly the same standard, but his impact will be higher now he’s not the number one in the centre.

Bit triggered after seeing his team lose after 4 quarters, again after another 2 with the VFL kids, then twice more in both final 2 minute end of game sims!

Must of hurt watching your team lose 4 times in one day. Kanga Kanga Kanga, ROO ROO ROO!!!!!

There were some nice plays here and there, but not reading too much into it. Seemingly got out unscathed which is the main goal.
Some promising signs with a few kids but no one really stood out as a massive wow. Ryan coming along nicely.

On another note, North have found a gem in Sheezel, he'll be fun to watch for them this year.

I'm curious to see what the MC has our best 22 looking like, the biggest highlight for me is we look to have depth in a lot of positions, particularly midfield and forward, which will make selection interesting if everyone is fully fit.

Pretty happy with todays hit out. The wind made it a bit scrappy, but a few boys seem to adjust to their new roles and positions as the game went on. And the best bit, no injuries. Some really exciting stuff out there. MRJ, Clarke, Taranto and Hopper, Dusty, i could go on. But it felt each player had moments during the match. Good stuff tigers.
And the first quarter reading of this thread was elite.

what is the current opinions of Short in the midfield. Last year I thought he was a liability. The coaching staff seem determined to keep him there. Thoughts after this morning? Any positives? Improvement?
Liability/surplus to needs. Been saying for over six months we should have traded him.

Could have kept a first rounder for next year. I hope he is on the table at the end of this year if he can't turning things around.

Liability at center bounces and adds to our lack of midfield pressure. Too easily stepped or shrugged. His kicking is notable for its depth and general accuracy but the negatives outweigh the positives.

100% rather Sonsie have that midfield time, o think he’s more damaging with his disposal and less of a physical liability.

Between, Clarke, Ralphsmith, short, Rioli, Baker it’s just too many smaller bodies in the middle of the ground especially during transition.

Similar to last year, as they get caught out in the corridor and the ball whizzed past and straight into the backline.

Trade one of our b&f players? He’s not a mid never has been. Only plays there when it’s absolutely needed. Plays his best footy off hbf and hopefully that’s where he plays 90% of his footy.

He’s always been shit defensively. But that’s not why he’s in the team

Richmond rotated through its stars as it held off North Melbourne at Arden Street on Friday, the Tigers saluting 11.9 (75) to 10.13 (73) in blustery conditions.

North Melbourne was composed and well-disciplined in its first competitive run under new coach Alastair Clarkson, spreading the Richmond defence and creating space in attack.

Harry Sheezel was outstanding early, playing across half-forward and pushing into the middle at times, booting two goals in the first quarter, before bobbing up in the fourth term for a clever third goal.

Richmond recruits Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper fitted in beautifully, spending a lot of time at centre bounces and impressing with their neat disposal. Taranto in particular looked dangerous floating into attack, kicking two goals.

Taranto scores first in yellow and black

Tim Taranto gets his first goal for Richmond in the match simulation against North Melbourne.
Dustin Martin exploded into action in the third quarter, with two trademark goals in the space of a couple of minutes.

Tom Brown is yet to debut after a year on the list, but the young Richmond defender looked very comfortable at the top level and had some nice moments. Samson Ryan played Tom Lynch's role and looked lively.

Trent Cotchin and Jack Ziebell went head-to-head, Cotchin kicking a neat front-and-centre goal in the second term in his new predominantly forward role. Rhyan Mansell also spent time across half-forward, having mainly played defence in his short career, while Ben Miller switched between forward and defence within the game.

Both clubs agreed to running a drill in the final two minutes of the second and third quarters, returning to the middle of the field for a centre bounce. Richmond – as the team in front at the time – set up as if defending a lead of less than a goal, while North Melbourne attempted to hit the front. The Tigers sent Cotchin into the middle for the "final minutes".

The Tigers began to roll through the changes after three of the six terms (the latter two featuring mostly VFL players), with Noah Cumberland, Biggie Nyuon, Thomson Dow, Ivan Soldo and Seth Campbell taking to the field, while Cotchin and Martin rested.

The Tigers were without Tom Lynch (foot), Shai Bolton (personal reasons), Marlion Pickett (general sorenss), Liam Baker (appendix), Nathan Broad (hamstring) and Jack Graham (toe).

North Melbourne went with a very tall forward line, with Nick Larkey, Callum Coleman-Jones, Charlie Comben and Eddie Ford all featuring; Comben in particular having some promising moments up against established Richmond defenders like Dylan Grimes, Robbie Tarrant (playing a half each) and Noah Balta.

Will Phillips showed some nice signs running through the middle, while Luke Davies-Uniacke picked up where he left off with a very professional performance.

Griffin Logue got through three pre-determined quarters in his first North Melbourne outing, the former Docker wearing a glove to protect his dislocated finger.

Yes it is valid, but it is also a tad early to be considering moving forward to Soldo, is that a oximoron?

Our strength has always been our pressure round the ball once it hits the ground, Nank is a big part of that. Last season it was lacking because it was all left to Cotchin and Prestia. This season we have added to that pressure, but our new mids will balance us out so we will more ammunition to battle up against the Cripps and Oliver's, who will still be dominant players, but hopefully less so. Nank's ground ball pressure will still be important.

Taranto, I’m having something on him for the Brownlow. Super fit, will play mid and kick goals.

Ryan and Clarke were impressive. Seth Campbell is a smoothhhh mover.

Lot’s of our senior lads going half pace out there today.

Not sure what to read into Cumbos lack of game time . I’m a fan. We will have a plethora of medium, small forwards this year.
After the trade period I put a $5 multibet on taranto and Richmond flag double to win $4000

Think we've regenerated our midfield.
In Hopp & TT
Out Cotch & Lambert.
Think the basis of our game is still the same with the focus more on footskills than clearances.
