I couldn't be more disappointed with this season's four wins, three of which were over the bottom four teams.
Skills are sub-standard, gameplan, well I have no clue what the actual methodology is to move the ball, Defense has stood strong all year, but that won't win us games

Dal's the obvious focal point but I'm not sure it's as easy a fix as that, but the midfield seriously needs some work, outside of Tyanna and at times Jamiee, it doesn't exist.

on to the game

Well, may as well barrack for the other teams around us now. Slink up the draft order in what seems to be one of the best draft pools. Sounds similar to the blokes. Where are we getting pick 8 from though?

One of main problems is the age of the list. Doggies had 1 player over 30. St Kilda had 8. Dogs had 18 players under 26. St Kilda had 12. Dogs had 11 players under 22 and Saints had 4. No wonder the Dogs played with more energy and a more entertaining/ exciting style.

And unfortunately this cant be fixed for a few years because of poor list management decisions last year when some older players were puts on crazy long terms deals when they should never have been. The club has an opportunity to trade/ delist 5 or 6 girls this year who are out of contract who are plus 28 and go to the draft. They have some good young players who just need to be played together for a few seasons and trusted.
It would also be good to see one or two more experienced players to come to the club - but not sure St Kilda would be seen as a “destination” club whilst the same people are running the show.

THe recruiting of Wardlaw Lambert and Watson has absolutely paid dividends. They're every chance to Trifecta the BnF and without them this season we might have struggled to win a game

Its the next level down thats the problem. Ty Smith is a star but past that too many of our squad have been massively overtaken by their equivalents at other Clubs. GP has been cruelled by injury and you have to think shes gonna struggle now. The likes of Xenos, Vesely., Exon, McDonald etc are OK players but have much better equivalents at better Clubs. Pick 4 on Ella Friend has so far been a bust.

They’ve finally given up on Priest in the back half. Thrown her forward and she’s lost every 1 on 1 contest she’s been in there as well.

Getting ugly.

Pick 4 on Ella Friend was the most stupid thing I've witnessed. I hardly followed that draft and I knew we screwed up the moment I heard her name. Same thing as when we picked Allison at 26 in the mens comp

In saying that, the top end of that draft was horrible - except the top 3 (classic St Kilda to have pick 4 in a draft with a top 3)

We did well with the Richards pick though, she looks like she's primed

Friend is only 20 still. I’d consider putting her at CHB next year. She can mark, read the play and has a nice kick. Royce Hart wouldn’t get a kick in our forward line given the way the ball comes in most of the time….
We desperately need a ruck. None of our 3 (Caris, Nelder or Fielder) have cemented a spot this year. Trade/ sell the farm to get a gun ruck. Keep just one of these 3 as back up.
Smith is a jet and so is Richards. Vesely has been playing injured all year, brave to the point of silly.
Young Simpson will good for us, just needs to get fitter. A couple of years in the system will help. Anderson also needs to get fitter to she can run both ways.

As i said above in earlier post - the club needs to clear the desks with the other players. If they don’t do this now, next year will be even worse.

I'm not sure how many is realistic to move on in one off season but we could easily delist 8-9 players and be better off for it.

Just an issue on whether we can bring in improvements while keeping every important player.

Agree on that. A bit of a combo of:

  • Rowbottom’s decision to nominate for the NSW draft meaning we missed both her and Prespakis.
  • Then selecting Friend. Friend v Prespakis kills.
  • Too much topping up for competitiveness I suspect.
  • Our cohort of clubs that came in in that year seem to have got a reallll crappy deal. I could be wrong but we have had Smith at 6, Georgia at 3, and Friend at 4. Did we have any other top 10 picks, even ones we coughed up in a trade? Richards just outside, and does some nice things. What happened to our top pick from the last draft?
  • Timing otherwise has sucked. The top teams have largely been able to constantly build on top of success. The old success breeds success. Those that have fallen off a cliff like the Dogs have finished up with some very high selections for the rebuild. And they will fly past us next year and give us windburn.

We also now have zero high level prospects below Smith in age, so there’s no next big thing for the future at all! I thought Vesely was in for a massive year, but not sure what happened there - injured? Molly would be a jet at another club with a strong midfield.

It’s very difficult to see anything better than mid table mediocrity or needing to rebuild and take multiple years for that to grow. The men’s list has at least started that process already.

They need to become competitive if they want the support of the Saints faithful, otherwise its painful to watch. Terrible in fact is still like watching an U12 boys game and thats just the reality of the product.

I actually prefer watching the womens NRL more than AFLW. It's much more like the real product. The skills gap is no where as large between the mens & womens games.

Think he coached well with the list he had tbh. % was ok.

No quick fix. The list isn’t up to scratch. They’re a mile behind most other sides in all aspects.

thanks for the response.

What happened to our top pick from the last draft?
Kiera Whiley - she played 3 games.

The draft before that was a top-draft draft that didn't have any u18 players and we traded almost everything for Wardlaw and Lambert. Then the one before, we took Anderson with our first pick which got pushed back to pick 16 after all the new team concessions.

I reckon Dal adds some real value and colour to the position. Also says as a club we take it seriously with one of favourite sons. The girls have a real spirit about them, they just need better high level players.

As the season went on we would capitalise on the turnover game to win and player deepest defender to stop scoring. Problem is that teams got better during the year less basic turnovers and left us exposed at the back....even with the plus one.

Our rebound skill set had no fluidity as our skills out of the back half are bottom 4, we would regularly drop chest marks as well. We have no handball to advantage game and no big bodied mids and ruck that burst away from the contest, so we relied on the turnover and built from there, no turnovers meant almost no possession end of story.

Only had a T Smith who plays above her weight, Olivia Vessely who has great hands in close but had bandages on both knees so clearly injured.

Thank God for Jamie Lambert who was everywhere, but she is over 30 so limited time left.

Nice so Anderson in the guts and with a fit GP and hopefully some judicious drafting or trading we can improve the same quantum as this year.

should the coach be moved on?

My view is that appointing Dal showed that we weren't taking it seriously. We appointed a club legend with virtually no coaching expertise instead of going and finding the best coach out there. He has obviously learned a lot, but my view is that we need to thank Dal for his service and go and find the best up and coming coach who's learned in a quality system like Brisbane or Adelaide, or maybe even a highly regarded AFLM assistant who is looking for a bit more work-life balance. We need to demand success across every aspect of the club, both men and women. I do believe that our list is good enough to be top eight.

Did we improve though. Start wonderfully but Id argue by seasons end we really hadn't
