JustaBattler 's Preview

History says that most games between the two sides are pretty close. The YTD stats evidence that on the whole the teams aren't that far apart - except for Essendon using much more handball and also being able to achieve 20% more uncontested possessions - both indicating that Essendon have more run and better spread disposal efficiency is better to date and meters gained pretty much underlines a better attacking game.

Essendon have a few players who can cause serious damage in Daniher and Tipp'n has caused Carlton a lot of grief since coming into their team.Defensive capability is led by Hurley and Heppell creates a lot of rebound - both smart players. Goddard has a habit of playing well against Carlton and the ruck match-ups pretty much even out - Essendon's ruck kicks goals 'easier' than Kreuzer.

Carlton are scratching to put together a side atm with injuries mounting. Casboult is a big out as this will free Hurley to play a much more intercept and rebound role.

On paper, Carlton will field a team with continuing question marks about its two way running midfield capability due to age of players - so Essendon's run will test Carlton. As against most sides this year center bounces and ball ups need to be evened out - otherwise clean kicks to a very tall and very mobile Daniher could cause much grief.

This preview will probably have to come in two parts because of question marks surrounding who will actually be available for Carlton.

Comments so far see posters 'wishing' for all of Murphy/Marchbank/Lang(finally) and Weitering to be included.

It is doubtful that Murphy will be fit and mixed messages about Lang's ability to play out a game suggest an each way bet here. Weitering starred in his VFL game on Saturday, and it appears that Plowman has copped a 'corky'. There is no doubt that playing all of Rowe/Jones/Mullett and O'Shea is a less capable defensive mix than one which includes Marchbank/Weitering. Byrne and Cuningham's injuries and form see Carlton devoid of run off HBF - and this in my mind combined with poor kick in capability - is severely hampering development of a rebound attack capability. There is no short term solution for this malaise.

Handy definite(?) inclusions will be Charlie and Marchbank - with Charlie being a player along with Cripps who Essendon probably don't have match ups for.

This is one of the real rivalries in AFL - characterised by mutual hatred from die hard supporters on each side - lot of history to draw on. Both teams are equal on 16 flags but both are far away from being the power houses they used to be. If Carlton wins - Essendon will have reached new lows in a year which saw many predict that they would be playing finals. IF Carlton loses it will be another nasty kick in the guts to long suffering supporters in 2018.

Carlton fans however, can continue to enjoy sparkling improvement and signs of future performances from Fisher who has overtaken SPS as the star young mid, and LOB whose kicking can already be described as A grade AFL level with penetrating length and accuracy. On balance Carlton should have no excuses in not being able to match Essendon midfield in terms of strength - 4Q run if anything will be the difference.

WHY IN?
Weitering
was impressive and deserves the call up. C.Curnow and Marchbank (Less likely) are musts if fit.

WHY OUT?
Can't see Casboult getting up after that knock. O'Shea should make way IF Caleb gets up (otherwise he will keep his position). I expect Graham to be dropped.

WHY NOT?
Murphy
likely to be at least one more week. Phillips likely to get another game. Still unsure about whether Lang is ready.

2 more - has a team ever had its entire best 22 injured? aside from * and their shenanigans........
We'll damn sure try Thy!

All seriousness, depending on the Ins and outs we might well be a real chance here. If Casboult is out Kerr may get a run. Charlie, Patt K and H as our main forwardline could be magical for the mothers.

They sure are, be close enough at half time, get a sniff and we could be hard to hold out with a bit of momentum.

Need a bit of quality to get back for us this week first though.

You blokes have a massive sniff here. We are a total rabble.

That backline is way to top heavy and slow at least one of Rowe Jones or Plowmen has to be dropped

Kerr surely a chance if casboult misses?
Keeps kicking goals. Has the same knock on his pace that matty wright had and yet he keeps kicking goals.
The other talls in the forward line can provide mobility. Will help his claims if we have the likes of Lang and Garlett running through the forward line to provide pressure (and eventually Pickett). Is there room for a bloke who knows where the big sticks are as the major skill?

Cas (ribs) Plow (cork) Oshea (omit) Rowe (omit)
Charlie Marchbank Weitering Lang

Simmo - Jones - Mullet
Marchbank - Weiteting - Thomas
SPS - Cripps - Fisher
Lang - C.Curnow - Kerridge
Wright - Mckay - Kruz
Phillips - E.Curnow - Kennedy
LOB - Graham- Dow - Garlett

We cant make any more than 4 changes IMO
Phillips stays is Cas cant get up.

Much better balance in that side

Kerr stiff but it wont hurt him to build a solid body of work

Would love to see Kerr in, but suspect Kreuze will continue to need ruck back up unless we use a combination
of Harry, Jones and even Kerr who have all pinch hit in the twos. Trouble is Kreuzer still looks hampered so
Phillips good chance of retaining his spot.

So assuming Cas is injured:
Marchbank in for OShea

Weiters in for Jones. I didn't think Jones had a bad game, and I've been one of his biggest advocates, but think that intercept role he plays has been forcing Weiters to play man on man, which his body isn't ready for.

Curnow in for Cas.

J Silvagni in for Wright. Wright has been playing on ball a lot more and has just been a shadow of his former self. I want to see Silvagni have a crack at this time as he did well in the twos.

If Lang and or Murph are ready, then Kerridge and Graham are first out (even though Graham didn't get a lot of it, he was cleaner than usual).

Can't wait for Willo, Pickett and Cuningham to be back in the squad.
