Confident of beating Port. Reckon they are overhyped.
depends

we have no backline and umps reamed us bad in the same game last year

they had multiple soft frees infront of goal like carltoon

In hindsight last night would have been ideal for Kozzie or even Crayfish/Miller to play as Lynch was underdone and Balta looked so much better in attack. Once he went into the backline the game changed. At times Lynch would get the ball at half forward and we are kicking it hoping MJR or Mansell would take an overhead mark.

Soldo is a pretty big loss as he was a decent grab and kick for goal usually. Even Miller could have been a good option as that second tall.

Last week went to tall this week went to small.

I don’t mind us playing Lynch and Dusty to hold the forward line together and Broad and Vlas down back for that reason but you can’t justify to me the need for Pickett and McIntosh to play at this point in time. I’d rather see Banks Baker Dow Ross Sonsie even Dan or Maurice get midfield/wing minutes than those guys , even Shorty on the wing.

Next week I’d go Prestia Young Gibcus Pickett McIntosh out and have Miller Kozzie Banks Coulthard and Brown in.

So tired of posters bagging Kmac and Pickett. If there’s players playing better than them in their roles, I could understand it but there’s no one knocking the door down. Kmac was fine last night and had to be deployed down back, and was ok but got outpositioned once or twice in an unfamiliar role.
Pickett had to go into the ruck, and was actually really effective and won clearances while in the role. He made a few mistakes while playing on the wing but at least he was trying to create something using his natural attacking instincts. Yze was asked about him and Shai and their errors, and he said he’s happy to back them in if they are in offence and trying to create.

I'm not bagging them.

I just don't think at 30 and 32 years of age they offer enough upside or consistently good quality contribution. I'm certainly not questioning their effort or physicality but their disposal at times is atrocious.

Prestia is clearly cooked and will never play more games than he misses in a year again.

Dusty, Lynch, Broad and Grimes are the other players 30+ and all have significantly better ability or structural need, although I suspect/hope Grimes is in his last year unless he can prove that relinquishing the captaincy makes him a better player in '24.

We need to see more of the likes of Brown, Banks, Clarke, Coulthard, Sonsie etc. Some of them were decent picks and need AFL exposure for growth.

We didn't go too small we lost Gibcus and Young. Playing another tall would have been detrimental to our side last night. You cant pick a team planning on injuries to happen.

We play virtually without an interchange bench after 1/2 time - balta has to be moved back and then they send curnow as the loose man in defence in the dying minutes. If carlton supporters think they are serious top 4 they are kidding themselves.
They are a good team but miles of premership material.
Richmond fought that out with sheer guts and determination.
Remember they also had a few good players out...

Felling many emotions, wasnt to upset which i normally am losing close games but proud of the boys with 3 down and still fighting till the end. Balta going back in the last (due to gibbo and young off) did hurt our structure because he was an aerial threat up froward before that and lynch was double teamed, more times than not in the last .

All i will say is the umpires decided that game in the last. Balta runs down owies, owies throws himself forward and gets the free and goal = criminal. Perfect tackle and should've been rewarded.
Baker even though he gave away the 50 the ump gives dekoning a 70 meter penalty which was ridicules and he goaled.

Don't want to say to much about certain players as im sure many have already but Mansell ffs another costly miss 5 meters out. Bring in someone like Clarke who has skill and can finish off his work. It was a crucial part of the game late in the 3rd, would've put us 13 points up heading into the last.

Gibcus can not take a trick. What a massive out for us. Surely that’s Balta back now. We don’t have anyone else.

Prestia surprise surprise does a hammy. How can the club not get this bloke right given his history. It’s beyond a joke now.

Mansell should never play a senior game again. Not up to it.

After every game umpires this umpires that. Over it. Let’s focus on team performance and leave all umpire comments in the umpire thread. Can’t be too disappointed about our performance that’s for sure.

Overall a really gutsy performance which made for a great evening at the footy which I was pretty worried about after last week. Injuries and umps made it pretty tough for us but we could have pinched it at the end.

Probably the most promising thing for me is that there is a lot of improvement in the side, brain fades and poor skill execution should hopefully work their way out of our play as we build into the season. Should hopefully get a lot more out of Bolton too who had a mare both in terms of execution and effort. Lynch also looked pretty good for a year out. Grimes for mine is a worry as he looked miles off it as well as giving away his customary terrible free. Gibcus is devastating and puts a real dampener on the year as watching him develop this year was going to be a real highlight.

So important that we beat port next week to cement this good work, am a bit worried that we could be playing pretty good footy and still find ourselves 0-4 with the season effectively over.

Also what's the go with the "oof" every time saad kicks it? Don't want to tell anyone how to enjoy the footy but didn't love it

Gutted for Gibcus looked a very nasty injury. Some forced changes next week with a fairly bare cupboard - if he looked good today Mcauliffe in for prestia for a debut. I’d rather cumbo for mansell too. I don’t even know how you can miss from that clos
young kid, pressure moment...it happens.
What I'm more concerned about is TT, whats the use of winning the ball when you give right back to the oppo?

Last night game was weird for me. I expected a huge loss and was pleasantly surprized when we started so well. Our midfield was like a completely different group. Carlton are a side that prides themselves on the inside ball but we outpointed them in all bu the last quarter when we ran out of legs. I loved the difference Nank's presences made. He makes our midfielders better through his tap work, his ability to create space and his furiousity around the contest.

The only elements of our midfield that did concern me was Prestia's injury (I think we may be witnessing his last season) and our defensive zone. At times Carlton cut through our defense like butter and their seemed like a ridiculous amount of space in the corridor. Players looked stagnant and the blues chipped through them like witches hats. I hope this is just teething as they learn a new system but regardless, it has to change and change quickly.

Balta looked good. I hate to admit it and it is still very early but, he does look decent along side Lynch. He plays in a different way than most forwards but I sense that could be a good thing. He took some strong marks and found space out the back. He set up others and was a physical presence. He had a couple of massive brain fades but I'll take that if it means less pressure on Lynch and a viable target to straighten us up.

Defensively we also looked better. Grimes and Broad seem ed much improved and Vlaustin was then able to feed off that with intercepts. Short and Rioli were eager to race the ball forward and generated far more run for us than in Round 1. Given how easy the bally came into our backline at times, I feel that the group stood up well. Gibcus and Young going down (for a time), certainly hurt our structure but having the flexibility of players like McIntosh and Balta, was a blessing.

Dusty and Bolton were a class above at times but both disappeared later. I'm not sure if that was through fitness or the opposition tightening up on them.

All in all, I'm not devasted by the loss. I feel there was alot of positives to take out of the game and we may not be the basketcase I feared. Lets see..
