Lots of celebration after a great one q . I legit figured the whole team got the team bus down the TAB and loaded up on the Hawks. Explains the deliberate point kicking and general halfarsedness. But then at 3q time, Mini got word we been spotted told em to win or get in loads of trouble. Terrible game. Be nice to see more than 1 good q next week, I'm thinking....4?

This comment is on point.

Was at the game yesterday and the glaring issue outside of any marking target in the fwd line was our lack of leg speed.

Nothing seemed to change until that last quarter, it looked like kmac was moved off the wing and young banks/coulthard and ross took that over, kmac ended up fwd and Pickett went into the ruck.

Like some other posters have said we can’t paper over the cracks of what was mostly a pretty ordinary performance, changes HAVE to be made.

I think some champs have to either be rested or find some form in vfl.

Outs - mansell, kmac, Cotchin, miller
Ins - Cumberland, Browne, sonsie, Ryan

Maybe play cotch as the sub against the big bodies of melbum but we need to add some youth to this squad desperately, along with someone with genuine goal scoring ability in Cumberland.

We will loose by 186 if we make those changes

I agreed with commentary about the free against Grimes. Mansell needed to make more of an effort to get to the ball and and fumble/knock it over the line. Except he stood back and watched it. Therefore the ump had no option but to penalise Grimes.

Pretend for a sec we are playing under the old 'deliberate' rule - if Grimes deliberately went for the boundary line and Mansell had a chance of keeping it in, but he chose to stand back and watch the ball go out of play, then Grimes would still be penalised for deliberate.

Apply the same logic to the new harsher OOB rule interpretation: Grimes was in the clear, in posseession, and he elected to kick the ball towards the boundary line. He isn't saved by the fact that it was roughly headed in Mansell's general direction. He needed to kick the ball further inside the field of play to Mansell. Not to the boundary line. When Mansell saw his kick was going out, he needed to make more an effort to get there and touch the ball.

That's the rule.

Anyway, fans complain WAY TOO MUCH about these frees. It rarely catches the defenders out. They've kicked the ball away from goal and they have numbers back ready to defend the next inside fifty. Much ado about nothing, I think.

--------------------------

The 2 decisions which went Sicily's way are easily explainable. I'm not saying the ump was correct. Just playing devil's advocate and trying to understand WHY instead of labelling him a "cheating dog".

1. For the hold: The umpire was obviously blind-sided and he missed it. It happens. Umps aren't always in best position and they sometimes miss the obvious free that everyone else sees. It doesn't make them "corrupt". Ease up! Imagine if every time Jack Riewoldt missed a shot at goal, people accused him of match-fixing and taking bribes from bookies.

Perhaps another umpire could've awarded the free kick, but you rarely see that. It would be a massive call for an umpire 50m away to overrule the ump who was 15m away and give Jack a free shot at the goal in the 4th qtr of a close game.

2. For the in the back to Sicily... That was pretty well milked by Sic. Jack put a hand in his back and gave him a little push and Sicily fell forwards. Annoying for Jack and tigers fans, but you can't exactly complain about it. This is how the game is umpired. if you get in someone's back and they go to ground, a free kick is always likely. (Although, Marlion Pickett seemed to get away with a few against Sicily)

They were hardly "momemtum changers". Richmond had all the momentum. These decisions didn't result in Hawthorn goals.

A momentum changing decision was the "dangerous tackle" against Reeves to Soldo in the 1st quarter. Hawks were leading 4 goals to 1. They were well on top. Soldo grabbed the ball, was tackled, made no effort to dispose of it and was taken to the ground.

For the last 120 years, that's been holding the ball. But under the current shitty rule interpretation, crafty players have quickly learned to hold onto the ball and let themselves be rag-dolled in order to milk a dangerous tackle. Doesn't make it right. It sucks.

Goal to Richmond and then another... There's your "momentum changer".
Hawks went into quarter time with a 6 point lead after they'd dominated the 1st quarter.
Insufficient intent is the worst and most annoying rule in the AFL, no one cares if it was the right call. Might as well just make it last touch out is a free against, which is awful. Players shouldn't have to put on a show when they're 3 metres from a ball on the boundary line. It's silly that clearing kicks from D50 are penalised when they're under pressure and the ball bounces wrong.

"Can't exactly complain" about a player diving forward for frees? What? And then you go on to defend a dangerous tackle? I don't particularly love the way they've gone about handling those tackles this year, and some players certainly milk those ones which is really dangerous, but that was not the case here at all.

That was as bad a win as I have ever seen.
dont think we even deserved it.
the stoppages at centre bounces - throw the ball up ffs - was deplorable.
we made worpel look like Ablett jnr.
And the little campaigner like Bartlett

Think it is time to start abusing Dan Richardson via hand written mail. There is something far more chilling about receiving a whole heap of actual hard copies saying what a s**t bloke and failure you are.

Is probably the reason we get shafted so much is his bitterness that as soon as he was replaced by someone competent we started winning
Salty campaigner he is , it’s interesting there have been a few ex tigers in the umpires role and we continue to get shafted

So many little moments of brilliance from some of our players

Think it was in the final qtr when around d50 Bolton sharks a handball between two hawks players at full pace and breaks the ground open

Along with Rioli who pouched on a lose ball at full tilt after being well held all day

In: Ryan, Cumberland
Out: Miller, Pickett, Mansell (sub)

Coulthard gets a full game
Cumberland comes in to give us a desperately needed forward option
Ryan is an upgrade to Miller in the ruck which will be needed against Gawn

Mansell is lucky as a sub, could be Pickett instead.
Are you insane, Pickett went into the ruck in the last quarter and we managed to win clearances and win the game. It’s unfair that he has to play forward to try to crash the packs when he is way too small but he does it for the team. Then he plays as second ruck and makes a contest. He would be first pick in my team along with Baker. Don’t believe the stats when evaluating Picketts game

We played one good quarter, but what I want to see us build on is the never say die and always believe you can win attitude.

Dare I say it, Collingwood have mastered it in recent times, and it's an excellent trait to have for a team when they always believe they can win, and the opposition always fear you're coming.
colonwood have the umps in their pocket while we are the complete opposite

big difference in close games

It’s interesting that we have had a few ex tigers heading up the umpires and we get shafted

Don’t forget that Rioli fell into the clutches of Louie Meehan and survived

Spot on Brother, plus we need him to get to 100 games before he gets life in jail

Maybe they're using Richo's method, i.e, they are so terrified of being labelled biased they instruct the maggots to shaft us every chance they get.

That sounds about right. It’s a whole new umpiring universe when teams play Richmond. Has been that way for the past 5 or so years.
Yeah we needed all the help we could get tbh . We were pretty lucky the AFL let us even grace the same oval as you guys.
A great learning experience for us 😆

It’s a corrupt Organisation , it’s interesting there have been a number of close games orchestrated by the umps to keep viewers attached

Or to make sure the scores stay close if it helps the betting agencies.

Well I picked up $260 bucks yesterday on a multi and $40 on Carltoon beating WC for a total outlay of $20

That play by Rioli when he split the 2 hawks at pace was so freakin good.

Funny thing, I had the most annoying hawks supporter sitting next to me up til 3/4 time when she swapped with her friend. It was then we started playing well! 😁
Find that woman, bring her to the Melbourne game then don’t sit anywhere near her. We need all the good omens and lucky charms we can get at this stage of the season lol

Kmac to play the key forward role instead of Pickett.

Cumberland in.

Not sure who goes out.
I don't mind this idea. We need to start pushing our kids through the wings and Kmac has become a bit of a clogger there if we're honest. He's a good set shot, good height, can take a mark. Can't be any worse forward than Pickett.

Yeah it was sick

Especially with the context that he had a really rough day in terms of getting his hands on it until that last qtr

He saw his moment and pounced
