Hawthorn since 1980

Schwab - sacked
Judge - under contract but offered the WC job and was released. Eventually sacked at WC.
Knights - sacked
Joyce - sacked
Jeans - retired

Only Jeans ended his career on his own terms. Clarkson will most probably get to to retire as well. And this from perhaps the best of the modern clubs.

Yup!
And how many of those had lots more roles after leaving the Hawks?

And what do you suggest is done about it?

Nah. I think it's a move in the other direction.
So in the last 12 months we have had our:
- Football GM (Bond) sacked
- List Manager (Lloyd) resign
- Senior Coach (Lyon) sacked
- at least one Assistant Coach (Guerra) not renewed with every other Assistant (except Hale) put on notice
- CEO (Rosich) not renewed

And if you believe the rumours, the new List Manager has been put under the pump by the new Football GM.

It seems like quite a bit of Footy Dept change.

Thanks for the culture change Ross.

Jesus Christ, what a hit piece. I'm sure parts are true and some are exaggerated.

Does anyone know who actually appointed Micallef, if it was Bell, its a pretty big slight on him because he would appear to be a complete dud, something Bell himself has recognised.

One things for sure, club is going to be a fresh place to be around next year.

Expecting a complete gutting and restart from the sounds of it.

I think will actually be a positve to bring guys in. In coming front office personnel will have the opportunity for a completely fresh football department to be built from the ground up WITH the benefit of having a finals ready list.

We need to settle for nothing for the best.

My opinion was that next year we push for finals - 11-13 win mark. Now they have set the bar at finals or failure.

Interesting season ahead.

After listening to Alcock it is clear that finals were expected and considered the pass mark. Logically that would mean we expect finals and a win next year or bust. I am not sure why we made the decision with one week to go, timing the market doesn't make sense unless they have someone lined up. If they do have someone lined up we are being told fibs. If they don't, most of the coaches we would look at are assistants at teams in the finals. Not much will happen there for at least three weeks, maybe more.

Not a fan of the timing, not certain on the public stance. If after sacking Ross we have a worse year next year the media will be worse and the pressure from fans will only increase. If supporters are upset with the performance this season, we must reach finals or logically we should all deem next year a failure.

Having said that I think it is an exciting list to get hold of with a potential A grade spine. So much change in such a small time is rarely positive from a business perspective in the first 24 months. Footy is different but leadership dynamics are similar. Unless Bell has OTT power like Thomas (would be a disaster) then not only will we have a new Senior Coach - relationships up and down and with the team. But a new CEO (most like to bring in some of their own team with them, which would mean more significant change. Change is a fickle bitch. I hope it goes well.
I'd say that this was a decision that has been in the pipeline for some time and they have been waiting until we were no longer any chance of playing finals. As soon as we were finally out of the finals race, they have ripped the band aid.

Nice, personal straight off the bat :) That didn't answer my question. So I ask again - what do you suggest is done about it?

Congrats to the torch and pitchfork carriers.
I should know better than to deal in absolutes and say he will be coaching in 2020.

I find it ironic that Longmuir is the talk for his replacement ... an assistant coach who is respected for his work in defence.
At least I can look forward to a 2020 season hopefully with less angst from the supporter base ... unless we keep losing and then it will all start again.
Longmuir was the forward coach before becoming the head assistant at the Eagles before he left to go to the Pies as defence coach in an assisting role. Both Clubs very impressed with him so not the silliest idea.

Don't think Ross has served as a combined father figure/comforter for the young guys from over east. How many of them has he had living at his home over the last 7 years? Or been invited to dinner? Do all the players get a dinner invite every year?

Fyfe recently said "Ross, I've seen evolve in the last couple of years to more of a father figure ... He was a bit of a lunatic in the early days with his hard edge and accountability and really ripping shreds of anyone he cold possibly get a hold of."

I would only be nervous if Sumich was appointed. Very nervous. So hope the board aren't influenced by the media flogs trying to get him a job.
In today's press conference, Lyon mentions yesterday he was going to meet with Harley Bennell in the morning to give him some advice. That tells me plenty about the close caring relationships he has with his players (and ex-players or at least some).

Who hired Micaleff??

Bell tried to replace him.
Apparently his ability to include the word 'pillars' every 15 seconds got him across the line in front of 'a very strong field'.

1. It has been suggested on here that Lyon had clauses in his contract that he would receive a bonus if Freo made finals. If he got sacked before that clause got triggered, then that bonus would need to have been paid. Seems plausible. Therefore it was best to wait until Freo were out of the finals before moving him on.

2. Once the decision had been made (Last Saturday night after Freo exited finals contention) then best make the decision ASAP so Freo can begin the recruitment process (remember that there is at least one other club also in the market for a senior coach (St Kilda) and there may yet become others).

3. The recruitment process can take some time and the sooner Freo can make an appointment, the sooner the new coach can be involved in list decisions (probably too late to be involved in delistings, but potentially have them on board for trade period)

Change is a fickle bitch. I hope it goes well.

Can’t have change (noun) without change (verb)

(Things cannot be different unless things are done differently)

Surely Freo fans wouldn’t be satisfied with the recent state of affairs at the club? Time for change.

LOL. You come back here five seconds after the coach is sacked and start making demands? That is a healthy ego.
I've got nothing to add to my reply, do some research and get over yourself

Knights coached Brisbane shortly after, but despite being a brilliant player he was a deplorable coach. Also worth noting that during the era of Schwab/Judge/Knights the club was essentially bankrupt....

Things cannot be differnet unless things are done differently... well, obviously.

the point I was making was that in business and in most organisations the time it takes for that change to be positive is 18-24 months. We have positioned ourselves for a 12 month window. The scale of what has been put in place is significant and would have more chance of being negative for the first 12-24 months than positive.

Oh god I'm scare now. I was feeling pretty good this morning now i'm rattled. Tell me how to feel bigfooty.

You said the club is in a shambles - on a day that people in the club are taking actions. I'm curious as to your opinion - and asked a clarifying question, which you have done your best to not respond to.

If name calling and 'do your own research' is the best you've got in reply, that's fine. Don't pretend that me asking is about me though - this is a discussion board after all.

Ultimately the right call was made. Ross was simply unwilling or unable to focus on the problems that were central to the bulk of our losses.

No-one will ever take 2012-2015 away from Ross and what he did for the club, but he has to own 2016-19 as well.

Obviously like Longmuir as a replacement, but we're lucky in that there are a lot of good assistants out there and (timing-wise) little competition.

Sumich - given his record of leaking, backgrounding and general destabilisation - should be frigging blacklisted. Falling backwards into the most talented crop of WA 18s in years doesn't qualify you for a job you've failed to qualify for over a decade and a half.

Thought Alcock was strong; the club is clearly listening to the concerns of the membership; even if it may not publicly seem like it on occasion.
