Experience. We're a young side and were without a captain for half the season. Supposed "psychological issues" tend to fix themselves.
Not convinced that Glass retiring mid year is the cause of our poor performance since 2012. I agree that experience helps sides win the close games, but we haven't beaten a good side for a very long time, which points to bigger issues in my opinion.

These are the average games of current squads that all beat sides who finished above us this year:
  • Western Bulldogs - 56 games (68 incl. Griffen and Cooney)
  • Brisbane Lions - 69 games (78 incl. Brown, Patfull, Moloney and McGrath)
  • St Kilda - 67 games (75 incl. Hayes and Jones)
  • Melbourne - 61 games
And the side that didn't beat a team who finished above them in the past two years:
  • West Coast - 77 games (89 incl. Glass and Cox)
Now, considering Brisbane's average is further inflated by Staker, Maguire and McGuane (430 games between them) who hardly played important roles in 2014, I'm not sure we can claim to be a "young side".

It's not as if our least experienced players are the guys out on the park - we have debuted three teenagers in the past two seasons. Brisbane and St Kilda have played at least eight, and the Bulldogs at least six.

What does this all mean? Possibly nothing. People might claim that St Kilda's win over Fremantle and Brisbane's win over NM were because the other side had their foot off the pedal. Perhaps we really were stricken with injuries, though I don't think we had it any worse than any other side this year. Maybe we've just been unlucky over the past two years and just failed to convert in front of goals...

But we're not that young a side, and by the time Glass retired we were already 4-7.

Looking forward to seeing Boyd earning his 50k for the game by producing a big row of donuts on the stats sheet.

Whats your source on these stats cobba?? Ive found 3 others which are different. You have said SQUAD average games, so if you think with Glass and Cox ours was 89 games, you may need to revisit this....?

All these teams, like us, had the bottom 6 draw. We may have a slightly older list but I know which team Id rather support.
I think we are tracking on par for a team with our age profile. Port are the standouts. Bastards.

Was interested to see who got Essendon seems there is a good chance a percentage of their team will be on "holiday".

Oh look, Sydney play them first up. Surprising.
Wouldn't read too much into that. It probably went more like this down at AFL House....

Hmm, Hird is back for his first game coaching. Which tame, boring, soft, yet loveable crowd can we put him in front of that will cause us not to look absolutely stupid? Swans. Done.

Whats the bet they are too gutless to schedule Essendon over here against us next year? Jobe and Hird. It would be Booooootiful.

I should have been clearer in my description. Those are the average games played by current full squads (as of today) taken from fanfooty.com (e.g. http://fanfooty.com.au/aflteams/westcoasteagles/)

I then added in senior players who were in the squads in 2014 and took out players (e.g. Beams and Christensen) who joined clubs since the end of the season, which is the figure in brackets.

I did it on excel in like 3 minutes so I don't claim it to be 100% accurate, but I was responding to the claim that it is because of our inexperienced 'young side' that we haven't beaten a finalist for two years (and haven't looked close to beating a top side away from home for a long time).

Like Nicnat? No more excuses for the big man, barring injuring in the IR series, he should have a full preseason. Very excited about what he can bring next season. :)
Yeah, hopefully he is jumping out of his skin. The Bulldogs don't have a ruckman who can go with Nic in full flight, unlike Boyd who will be given a big reality check trying to scrounge a kick on The Big Easy.

We're gonna learn a lot about WC this year I think. Either the gameplan/player improvement will come together or it won't. If we don't make the 8 comfortably the season is a fail. Losing Cox/Glass has cost us nothing. In fact, we're probably a better team for it. Only excuse will be a huge amount of injuries /touchwood.

I won't be able to handle another mid table finish. It will just set us up for another year of mediocrity in 2016. Top 6 or bottom 4 please, nothing in between.

Meanwhile, the game remains a tight affair with neither side managing to take ascendancy.

Poor Boyd.

A 19 year old kid with a $7 million dollar contract on his head, the hopes and dreams of a club on his shoulders and his first opponent is E-Mac.

Tough gig to get first up.
He's lucky it's only eMac and not Rance.

I hope so, I don't want to risk injury with him playing a meaningless game.
I get your point, but we didn't withdraw him from the Gold Coast game despite that being meaningless, so i can't see it happening here.

I'd say this would be more meaningful to him than the GCS game.
