Can Crouch be given an excuse in the context of RLs comment the team picked itself.

Doesn't that suggest he had plenty of options for picking a team without any injuries or excuses?

Which comes to your other point, who would you replace him with if he was underdone, if that is the dilemma in R1 then it illustrates just how far we've got to go before we have the depth to challenge.
Ross’s comments where actually that they were trying to balance the amount of youth they had playing - hence crouch playing.

Youngest side of the round I believe. You don’t play crouch - you’re then playing Hugo. 3 round 1 debutants with Pou and Windhager returning from injuries.

No Sinclair Dow Clark Jones.

Not sure it would have been smart to play another kid.

A mentally soft side would have thrown it in not kept coming .

Terrible skills, poor decision making and a slow badly beaten midfield were my take aways .
too many young physically immature players -terrible midfield would bring in Jones -Geelong strong organised very good defensively better team playing on their home ground -playing on to advantage and kicking out of bounds?handballing to team mates under pressure-poor deccision making- but love our speed and potential

Okay, as frustrating as Higgins was last night (didn’t take his moments), think it’s been overblown. 9 score involvements and has just come off a career best season at 36 goals in a tough position and malnourished forward line.

Steele was impressive but unfortunately limited support and we looked pedestrian in the middle. Need to rotate Chito and Henry through the middle, and thought RTB could’ve been more proactive in this space. Jones for foot speed, at least as a sub, could be worth considering.

Membrey and King were very impressive. Think King will learn from torching Lancey Boi, minutes on the park together will help.

Marshall probably our best and can see why he’s in the leadership group. Really led from the front with courage to stay in the contest despite the team not being at their best.

Cordy was solid, but Hawkins is looking less and less mobile as years go on.

Bonner was impressive in a game where it was very difficult getting out of a compressed D50 (needle in a haystack).

Henry will definitely add spark this year, but needs more time in the guts. He’s exactly what we need.

Should/could they have played Sincs?
He could well have been the catalyst that got us over the line .

I really hope it was totally required and that they didn’t try and be too smart and just hold him back for the Pies game.

Dunno mate.

In the cold light of day. It’s frustrating. But we lost a lot of players in the last month and it’s probably cost us last night.

The G will suit us. But Christ, we just have to be the bastards who get the pies smarting after copping 2 bloody lips from the Sydney sides.

Yup.
Dow would’ve been a big help.
Webster did us no favours at all.

Hard decision not make. Crouch was ineffective and probably a nippy young guy would have a done slightly better, but who knows. The worrying sign was that all our mids generally played from behind at centre bounces and didn't take on the loose ball. Looked like an unbalanced team who didn't know each other.

I know people want to highlight collard getting burnt. But you also need to accept that physically he had no impact and that’s likely what the outcome would have been if we also brought in Hugo.

Geelong are a seasoned veteran side. It’s like trying to play against your brother who is 5-6 years older. Eventually they just use their size and strength and they did it to us on the inside all night when we made ground on them.

Dare I say some a being a touch reactive on Higgo.

He definitely needs to find form but it would be foolish to completely write him off. He plays a tough position, and yet at his best can rack the ball up and kick a bag, at times he’s been the leading goal kicker in the league for small forwards. He’s still in the younger part of his career, and I’d like to think he can work into form as he’s shown in the past, but maybe that does require some time at Sandy if Collard is knocking down the door.

We tend to jump down King and Higgins throat whenever they miss set shots, and fair enough it’s been brutally hard to watch when they do, but they also have good form making it up.

Tough job for Ross and co ahead, there is a puzzle to be solved in the selection of our team and how to maximise its utility and talent, but I’m very bullish that our capacity for good football is much higher than last nights display & Ross and co have as good a chance as anyone to unlock that.
Granted not all bodies are the same but Higgo has the least definition on our list. He needs to drop mass somehow to get his spring back and repeating myself, he needs to play at HHF.

Based off Crouch’s stats and impact I’m absolutely certain he wasn’t the right call.
It’s never a perfect scenario and understand the need for balance between kids and experience but I think they must have had some idea he wasn’t ready.

My question from last night, and as a continuation from last year:, where does Phillipo play?
I don't think he is starting 22 at the moment.
Adds nothing to midfield, and behind a few in forward line.
Maybe Higgins out , Phillipou takes small/medium forward role.
Or take Michitos role, and put him on the guts.

This is the issue with the situation.

Idk I was roapable last night but winning in Geelong is almost impossible combine it with rd 1 ,new stadium. I think we were doomed from the start.

I said during the week I was worried about the run and gun without Sincs. Especially during high pressure games. If I hear another word about that Ollie Dempsey ill
Spew.

To those saying we havnt improved etc ‘we will only win 8 games’ have a long hard look at yourself. Once again Ross has shown how our defence will keep is in 95 % of games hence , nearly coming back and winning.

Goal kicking was average.

It took our guys a bit too long to adjust.

Thought Byrnes really tried hard. Also think we really miss butlers skills/finesse. Think Ross is ready to push out Higg once Lance is ready.

Overall Ik not too displeased. Really like kings ability to get up and down the ground. Have to keep persisting with Pou in the guys. Fast need to put Owens there too. Props to Ross for throwing a lot of different guys in there. Windy, Henry etc. for those who think these blokes will just become 10 clearance /30 disposal players in a second need to be more patient.

We’d want to improve a lot from last night. To me we probably bank two against WCE, Richmond, Essendon, Dogs maybe games on last night then a few 50/50s and we get 8 wins. To start beating better sides we need to get better quickly. A few have gone backwards on last year if that’s an indicator of where we are at.

We did last year too but the system looked better. Having a stuck together forward line almost made us better because entry was cleaner.

Thats fine but Brisbane won 3 straight with hack rucks that belted the ball forward. Why the eff can't Ro try that, or just something else ffs. It's not rocket surgery.
Probably the quality of mids they had though.

He’ll get rubbed out for smashing his back into Dangerfield’s knee for sure

Danger grabbed his face too. Should have been high and in the back. Stock was playing the ball, Danger played the man and got rewarded. We should make it a way to draw frees and train it. Also the rib charge on a prone Henry, we should use that as well.

I'm actually not that fussed about Pou- sure he has talent and potential, but I agree not quite starting 22 quality. I would just play him at CHF as there is no way he is a midfielder, that was like a man down last night while he was in there.

In a perfect world, it wouldn't do him any harm. But we don't have the list depth or players available to have someone of his quality slumming it at Sandy.
He’s a quality prospect but on current output he’s 10-15 touches a game and a couple marks. Can we really not cover that with depth?
