Review Round 1 vs Sydney - New year, same shit (now with less toilet paper)

33 new cases in SA today. Doesn’t matter where they came from, they’re here now.
Thought there would be 1 more AFL round. Sorry I was out by a week

but it does matter where they come from. Our testing is amongst the top handful in the world of rates per capita. Over 110,000 tests for 1,500 positives so far. Almost all of those have direct interaction with overseas travellers. The community isn’t yet known to be passing it on to each other in meaningful numbers. When that starts to happen it’ll explode, but the current regular increase in positives is due to large testing levels and identifying foreign travellers and first generation interactors with them. We won’t know which direction we‘re heading for a couple of weeks, unless we see genuine increase in community transmission.

Jury is out on Jones. If I am perfectly honest i didnt want the club to go near him. When i heard the media talking about the crows were going to pick him i was surprised tbh. My first impressions were that he wasn't overly quick, didn't have elite skills and seemed vanilla. Nothing against the lad and he may have a serviceable career but i saw much better talent in the draft pool. Ogilvie has been off his game with some of his draft selections. He doesnt seem to rate pace, height and kicking ability as high as he should imo.
I wanted:
1. Rozee (Seemed the next Chris Judd) May be better.
2. Jordan Clark. Very good player at Geelong. Rebounding defender.
3. Jye Caldwell. Looks at good player at gws.
4. Sam Smart- Looks very promising. Starred today for Freo.
5. Jackson Hately-Can play and a South Aussie.
5. Riley Collier-Dawkins-

In such a good draft (2018) with one of the strongest hands we completely f’ed it up.

I do think Schoenberg, Gollant, Worrell, McAsey, Hamill, Fogarty, Doedee are all going to be very good players so it's not all bad. We must nail the next 2 drafts.
I dont know how to dig up my preferences for that Drafy but I do know that I wanted Caldwell but he hasn't set the house on fire just yet. I know that I dont have all the intel of players and how they will turn out but for some reason we seem to take smaller framed players like McHenry and Jones. I was pleased that we at least grabbed Schoenberg.

Them little fellas Lachie Neale and Dion Prestia [175cm 82kg] going OK, Prestia now the Tigers number 1 mid which has allowed Dusty to go forward more and wreak havoc for the oppo defenders. Prestia with a round high 9 i50's and 546m gained. Size is less important than talent and grit in a midfielder.
But they have strong bodies. I know Jones is still developing but he body strength isnt good enough and he gets pushed around too much

Same shit different year, except our midfield setup/play is dramatically worse.
Predictable.
Stale.
Same terminally bad delivery to the forward 50.
Same constipated kickouts after a point. Same lack of intensity - particularly seeing Gibbs spectating as Heeney kept the ball alive and kicked a goal.
But frighteningly putrid - midfield clearances.

And Brad, any danger you might want to flick off a handball or a tap to our advantage when you take the ball first at clearances, instead of hanging on to the pill until you're dragged to the ground or you're dispossessed? Dammit Brad!

And we who know so much:rolleyes: - the midfield coach we all wanted gone, according to Rory himself, was the greatest influence on Sloane's career. Whatever's changed in the midfield is for the worse, and I didn't see any glimmer of hope in the 'new' tactics, whatever they were. Worse still if that's possible, it went on for the entire match.

One of the very few positives - to be smacked in the midfield all day long and somehow miraculously only lose by 3 points, means some things must have gone right, but for me they're lost in the putrescence of the rest of our game.
I think we were lucky we played Sydney. Had that been a Richmond or even Hawthorn we would have been killed.

We were in contention from 2015-2019 (18/19 we should have been) we have done the best we can with our picks, minus Gibbs. It’s time to chill the fu** out and deal with a team that will be bloody average over the next couple of years. Nicks job is to work out who is worth keeping and who we cut. It started last year and will continue this year and next.
Forget about wins, it’s not happening for a while. This is what our club needs, some absolute bottom of the barrel years, it’s the only way to clean the joint out properly. Another year almost contending but pretending will just continue what the last 20 years has produced.
That's the general consensus the issue remains that no-one trusts the decisions made won't completely screw it up so instead of 3yrs it's 10.
Chapman has got to go!
I'm not sure Nicks is our man .. especially after his comments post match regarding Gibbs.
We'd all prefer the no bullshit route at this point, no more mixed messaging if he genuinely like Gibbs game... wow.

Caldwell a few of us liked, can't get a game where he is and they've just grabbed Green so that shuffles him down further.

I was very disappointed on Saturday, not so much because we lost, but because of what I saw. For example:
- got absolutely smashed in clearances. For some reason Brodie Smith was in at the bounces, with matt crouch running off half back. If this is Nicks big move, then he has no idea. Surely matt in the middle, smith on a wing? Smith at half back even offered us more. Milera in the middle would be better than smith too, as at least he can evade.
- Gibbs in defence. The guy can't defend and this has been proven multiple times. Either he plays midfield or not at all. I'm ok with at least trying him in midfield. You know, if we were getting smashed in clearances, maybe try a guy that has previously been a good midfielder in there? Is a lock down role the best way to use him? May as well get a kid to do that, at least they will learn for the future.
- The complete lack of change in gameplan when it was obvious to everyone that we were getting killed in clearances. Even campo would've changed something.
- Billy Frampton (and the 2nd ruck position in general). Again we have misread the change in the game due to different rules. 2nd rucks are not necessary for a shortened match. Offered nothing that others could not and was a spectator when it hit the ground. Himmelberg a better option, but imo we needto replace him with a smaller, pressure option.
- Chayce Jones getting the Galucci treatment in the forward pocket. I get he may not have the stamina to play midfield all the time, but at least SOME of the time would give him vital experience. Have learned nothing.

Talk of 35 man squad more cuts, we were already ahead of the game Chappy take bow

I didn't catch whether that 35 number included the rookie list. At 38 + 6 rookies we'd still have some slashing to do. Brad Crouch, Hartigan, Poholke, Atkins, Gallucci, Himmelberg, Mackay, Knight all out of contract, all could easily go - Our first, Giants first, Bulldogs second, our second, potential end of first FA compensation makes for 5 eminently usable draft picks.

Crouch will be a beginning of 1st round.

Crouch will be a beginning of 1st round.

Pure fantasy.

The best you can get is mid first round right after your pick, and he'll never attract a contract big enough for that. Tom Lynch is the only one in recent times, and Brad Crouch has nowhere near his value. If we're lucky someone will gamble and we'll get a pick at end of first round, in recent times that's been Lycett, Rockliff, and Motlop, much closer to the mark.
