Gardiner played ordinary last year, but returning from injury and his past performances had him rightly in front of Payne. I am now of the opinion that we don't lose too much by playing Payne in front of Gardiner, and with an eye on the future we should be seriously considering Payne. I have previously posted that both Adams and Gardiner average more clangers than Payne per game, so yeah think there is some upside. Whilst Payne is developing Adams and Andrews take the best two defenders and Payne takes the third tall.
Lester should also be selected ahead of Gardiner. Lester is disciplined and certainly doesnt give frees away like Gardiner does.

Agreed, he doesnt even dominate VFL level yet gets picked in the AFL. I couldnt imagine him even dominating for Noosa in the QAFL. Again not sure how we are winning a flag if guys like him are getting a game.

Yes it would be hard for any team to win a flag with 2 key forwards missing

We have concerns coming out of the game but nothing we didn't know. It's obvious where we're lacking when we don't lock it in our forward line. Because we don't win it out of the centre clearance often enough to get killed on the rebound when we do.

We have some good players to come back and we probably should've won.
depending what you believe those concerns are, the fact that we still haven’t addressed some known concerns is an even bigger concern.

They're not stupid to the vast majority of supporters or other interested parties.

His responses were uncharacteristic , just his body language , the way his mouth was trying to suppress something at the end of his answers.

Something had got to him . The umpiring ??
I dont understand why coaches cant comment on the umpiring or why the afl protects them to the extent there a protected species and cant be critisiced when it is evident to everyone how bad they are at times but everyone has to pussy foot around them, I mean are they that precious?

A few interesting things from the game. Well coached Sam Mitchell, footy is a simple game, when they got it the whole team basically ran, i'm sure the message was along the lines of "Run hard and run early because they won't chase"

Thought it was interesting when Fort and the Big O had such domination of the ruck contests that we kept the ball on the inside of the stoppage so much. When they hit to the outside we carved them up.

Let's not lose sight of the face we have been up for a while, we are without McStay, Daniher and Adams it is the equivalent to Melbourne being with out Brown, McDonald and Lever.

Probably the most important bit, it looked bloody cold.

Why pick on Fullarton ?

He's a young guy just learning and was good today.

His ground skills are good and his rucking was better as well . I'm optimistic that he has a lot of improvement in him.

Not that I think he'll ever be a star but he's the best we have for that position at the moment.

Ballenden was much better so pretty confused why we turfed him and kept Fullartn, not that I thought Ballenden was a star, but hes better than Fullarton. Its just a shame Lester wasnt able to play although still confused why he wasnt playing in the ressies or seniors, must ve been injured I guess.

Can you clarify this with some stats for all of us please?

I see it the other way. Shore it is a little extreme but I think Sizemattres only wants us to be the best we can and we just arent delivering. I think there is a lot of reading between the lines from that persons post and that perhaps we should be considering other options because things are all a little to comfortable at the club? Could have it completely wrong tho lol.
*Sure

My turn to tee off.

Fagan. We have several players out of form. Some have been out of form for most of the season. Make some changes for the good of the team.

McCarthy, Gardiner and Andrews most notably for mine. Rich and Lyons, have also been down, but I believe their drop in form is more age/niggle/further drop off in leg speed.

Structurally, I’ve been saying it all season, we’re an inside mid short. If/when Neale cops a heavy tag, or when Neale is on the bench, we really struggle to win the ball.

We’re also still a really slow team, and can’t run with teams when we turn it over in our defensive 50.

Who would you take out and replace with?

As I said Last week, we're lazy, we have a "someone else will do it" attitude and we think we're going to play finals so why bust our nuts on a team like the Hawks.
Those attitudes can't be switched on and off and they become ingrained. Look at our desperation in the last 4 minutes. It was the intensity that good teams play with most of the time. We think we can coast because we're that good.

Extremely well said which you said in one short post compared to 4 of mine lol.

We know all that I think.

We are a good 2 way running inside mid short. Do you think Dev could be that player and who does he replace ?

I want T Berry in because he's quick ,hard and on what I've seen this year gets it at both ends.

I can see Gardiner in jeopardy because he's a purely defensive player who's getting found out defensively of late.

McCarthy is out of form but has lots of credits. Andrews will never be dropped . But he looks in need of a freshen up somehow.

All successful coaches go from being the great mate good guy to getting ruthless when they have to. We're 8-2 so you can hardly say it's panic stations but it seems we have many who doubt we'll get there when the crunchy end of the season comes.

As soon as you hear Leigh Fisher you know you loose the free kick count. No idea why he hates us. Avg free kicks a match 44. 36-27 Hawks fav.
Yes kills momentum. Although the Hawks played better and won. Mitchell seems a smart coach did some nice moves.
We moved Payne with 3 mins to go way too late.
Whoever plays on Wingard umm.. sorry seems no one does.

The three who people like the pick on the most Payne, Fullarton and Prior had good games. I had Prior in my top 5.
Need to get Berry to do a tackling clinic for the the rest of the team.
Neale carrying us every week in the mid. Imagine if he was injured again.

Honestly no idea why other teams just do not run the ball with speed against us week after week. It is our kryptonite
Everyone having articles on how to beat Melb.. Us just run it fast with overlapping handballs.
Yes we missing McStay/Joe and Adams..
Did anyone look who the Hawks are missing and their a bottom 8 side.
We play finals again this year we second on the ladder although we have a lot of holes.
Payne was a late 3rd round pick, Prior a 3rd round pick and Fullarton came to the club as a Cat B rookie I believe, so none of them cost the club too much, but seem to be the whipping boys, especially Payne and Fullarton.

IMO Payne and Prior just need a good run of games and will be reasonably good players. Tom might take a little longer but played arguably his best game today, especially in the first half.

By what metric was Ballenden better than Fullerton?

Ballenden was a very good field kick.

But Fullerton is better at ground level, getting the ball and dishing out handballs.

Ballenden lacked core strength and was easily pushed off the ball, even by players 15cm to 20cm shorter than him.

Both are/were weak in the ruck.

Neither could take pack marks. Well until today. Fullerton took a couple of good ones.

In terms of key forward potential, Fullerton showed more today than Ballenden ever did.

Doubt we’ll get where?

Who would you take out and replace with?
Gardiner out, Payne in. Andrews, Payne and Adams as our tall defenders.

I also would have Rich playing the role Hodge used, behind the defence, directing traffic. Take that duty away from Andrews, and just let Andrews concentrate on playing defence.

McCarthy out. Zorko and Bailey to play more forward, half forward. Less time through the middle. Though Zorko can play through the midfield if we need to change things up.

Robertson in to the midfield rotation with Neale, Lyons, Rayner and McCluggage.
