People keep underrating Martin. He isn’t a good marking forward but he does play as an extra midfielder. He often crops up in those link up handball chains through the corridor as well as running hard to the wing to present an option.

That overlapping handball through the middle is one of our key modes we play in and Stef fits into that very well for a ruckman.

We do however also have a fair bit of the “long and down the line” to our game as well which is where Oscar proves his worth. He doesn’t clunk them regularly enough yet but he makes it a contest more times than not. How often did Carlton just mark those almost uncontested yesterday in his absence? It arguably cost us the game. We just couldn’t get it down our end as a result.

From what I can tell, Archie doesn’t seem capable of playing the midfield role that Stef does or provide the marking option that Oscar gives us. I just can’t see what he offers us after the ruck contest.
From my “leather seat with ipad “ I noticed Martin crack in and try to lift us when the stinky inevitable was arising,he was vote worthy on the Lions side of things

I wasn't 100% happy at the time but you also have to factor in the two first rounders from the Pies as a result of the Neale trade. Ely Smith may be that other elite mid fielder.
We got Neale for unders i thought it at the time and 100% still think it he is exactly what we needed plus more. Yeah hopefully Smith, Joyce, Starcevich, CLyons, TBerry or Bailey can be that next elite mid we need i still think Mathieson will be a solid mid for us for a long time.

Funny thing was that Fagan appeared to see this coming, despite being up 40-3 once they kicked a couple in a row Fagan started looking very worried and pacing around a bit and the commentators noted this a few times.

Also... Fox Footy's 3 word analysis for the weekend was: Failed maturity test.

I haven’t caught up, but I presume there are heaps of people apologising to Dylan12, because he was 100% correct.

Because he took a 50/50 punt on us losing and said if we did it would be selection? has he apologised for every time he has got his 'it will be lost at selection' prediction wrong this season when we win? He owes us a few so we will call it even.

We were sitting dead in the wing and time and again in the third quarter we bombed it to a contest in the wing, turned it over and Carlton went back inside their 50 straight through the corridor. We were beyond one dimensional. Carlton’s coaches mush have been beside themselves with joy because we demonstrated that we had no Plan B.

We have lots of plans. We have shown to be versatile. We just lost the psychological game, looked very tired and it all got away from us.

Fair call lot a revisionists on here looking for brownie points he’s not alone

Does any one here actually know that Nick gets a role on a specific player most weeks he plays?? Or does everyone just shoot from the hip with emotion and irrational BS. I’m my own worst enemy here for reading this I guess but I actually enjoy the chat. I’ve refrained from commenting for a while because to be honest anyone would sometimes think we were sitting bottom of the ladder the way some react here.
The abitrary calls for Nick delisting and getting dropped every week is just ridiculous (and many other players)
First game this year he played 3 quarters on Fantasia and kept him scoreless. He got his 2 goals during Nicks compulsory rotation. Asked to go to Wulla for the last quarter and the guy had already kicked 5 (on who I might add) and some drongos on here suggested he had 7 kicked on him??? “Nicks ****, should never play for the Lions again” or words to the affect.
Against Collingwood I thought he played a really good game that day.
Hawthorne kept Breust to one goal (yes from his error) and today McGovern one goal and no influence.
He could run and chase kicks but he doesn’t. He plays his role. Some on here need understand how this works sometimes rather than sacrificing your own players to appease your own frustrations.
You think these guys won’t be pissed!!! Ashamed!!! Far out some have no idea.
Deluded if you really thought this was a premiership year. Absolute leaps and bounds this season but today reminds everybody how much work is left to do.
You can either bag the **** out of your own players that when they win you “love” them when they lose you tear them apart or stick fat. Constructive criticism of the game is fine and always a good read. Lately it gotten worse than that.
Nothing wrong with passion and there are many here that have supported the Lions for many more years than myself. Still 6 years and a playing Son that gets ripped to the ********* on his on teams “supporters forum” probably allows me to stand up a voice my disappointment.
There are many many realists with composed commentary on this forum and its those I really enjoy reading.

Hey Mate. I read this post and then scrambled back through every comment on this thread looking for what had been said about Nick, thinking it must have been an absolute meltdown. I found 2 mentions about him, questioning if his selection was validated compared to walker and others left out in a respectful fashion, one other generally negative comment and one troll comment from a first time poster saying "Robertson is always bad". I also saw lots of posts supporting him and lots of posts mentioning people had him in their votes. Generally didn't even think Nick was a hot topic this week. I think he played pretty well and will line up against the Saints. Next step for me, is doing a role and getting 20+ touches.

On debut Archie did really quite well in the midfield - 17 contested & 9 clearances and really pretty good in those first couple games. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have been able to sustain that, which is a pity as his ruck craft has come a long way since then.

Eagles losing to Sydney is honestly almost as bad as our loss yesterday. Richmond got pantsed, albeit against the likely premiers IMO.

Good teams can have bad days, the key is to not let those bad days become common. I felt pretty down after the loss yesterday, maybe it’s a factor of constantly seeing losses in Melbourne but now I feel like this gives us an opportunity to bounce back. I’m excited to see what we bring against the Saints after the bye and maybe some retooling from Fages.

You guys are gonna SMOKE the saints at Marvel. The scary thing atm (for other supporters) is watching you guys when you play at home. It’s got shades of 2000 onwards about it. You guys are bloody close.

40-3 then we stopped playing. Each of the forwards and mids should be forced to apologise to our poor defenders.

I haven't seen a bigger lead blown since Shooter McGavin blew a 4-shot lead on the back 9 to Happy Gilmore at the Tour Championship, smh.

Thanks Jas. It really was a great privilege to spend even a short amount of time with Bulldog. He was getting swarmed all night and to be honest I felt bad even approaching him, because I wanted him to enjoy at least some of his time with his past players and friends, instead of just signing autographs. But he really does have the time for everyone. Was one of two people that received a standing ovation last night, with the other player being Browny.

Browny’s interview was great and had the room in stitches. Said that before the 2004 GF he remembers oiling up Lynchy’s wheelchair haha. Also mentioned that the best mate he has ever made from football is Tim Notting which I had no idea about.

Also great to see one of my childhood favourites Richard Osbourne get inducted in to Hall of Fame. Said that although he played for 3 other clubs, he has and always will be a roy boy at heart.
I’ve met and chatted to Kevin many times. Appreciate the story nonetheless.

I was too angry / gutted to attend and ultimately decided against going despite having purchased a ticket and retreated down the beach where I go most weekends.

No doubt I missed a great night, but I was honestly in no mood to attend on the back of the crap the club dished up yesterday; players, coaches and match committee included because ultimately, most move on with no affiliation to the club, memories aside other than a select few.

Fair comment.

But I do get how Robbo18! would be sensitive to criticism of his son. It only takes one dickhead to shoot from the hip to set off the defensive mechanisms that are built into all parents, especially when "Nick bashing" has been a bit of a theme. If not so much here recently, then certainly on that FB page that has been referred to.

The criticism of his game against Essendon when he was supposedly "playing" on AMT was as outrageous as it was ill-informed.

FWIW, I thought Nick has done just about everything that could be reasonably be expected in the last couple of weeks. He's made some mistakes, like all our guys but not as bad as some of the howlers committed by some of our higher profile players

Totally agree with the sentiment; this place provided great solidarity when we were rubbish, but as we have improved, it's become disproportionately negative. That aside, I just wanted to thank you for the additional insight, it's always great to understand what a player's actual brief is. There's a lot of nuance that's missed from the spectator's perspective which provides a fuller picture of how 'well' someone played (beyond the obvious e.g. not turning over the ball).

You do realise that the celebration was for over 100 years of shared history, not for the Carlton game?
Yeah I do; but it was pointless attending something when I was livid at what had occurred earlier in the day on the back of the players disgracing the jumper. It wouldn’t have been fair on those around me to pretend or feign happiness. I can appreciate our history for what it is over feigning happinesses and pretending that what I witnessed earlier in the day was acceptable particularly in that jumper.

I doubt it.

Of all our draftees last year, Ely seems the one most likely not to make it. All four others have shown way more than Ely has and his disposal is particularly poor.

Incredible that you can make this judgement after 11 NEAFL games.

Will have to wait and see I guess but there must be something there for our guys to take him in the first round. Players in his position often don't have great disposal. Dangerfield was once labelled "Clangerfield" and Fyfe's disposal is far from elite
