Jai Newcombe had 9 inside 50s for the day - 3 of those ended up being direct goal assists due to him lowering his eyes and hitting a leading or free target.

I was told by a former player that some in the AFL who were working at other clubs believed that his 2022 season was a flash in the pan and that he had met his ceiling. Games like today prove how impressive and valuable his football brain is to our young team.

He’s a matchup nightmare for the opposition. His bulk and low centre of gravity make him impossible to push off the ball so he’s willing to pivot in tackles and make unconventional decisions whilst under pressure like accelerating into traffic. He really looks like a reincarnation of Leigh Matthews which is about the biggest compliment you can give an afl footballer.

Guys that work as hard as he does don't have a ceiling.

A short, fat, slow player like Mitchell should have been a below average AFL player/star VFL level player on face value. It's just when you're as diligent and committed to your craft like Sam/Jai you can consistently break those preconceived barriers.

Those self motivated types are rare in footy and the world in general.

We've got a special one here.

Before the mods delete for NBA references, the best player in the league is arguably the least athletic - but his skill and smarts elevate him above everyone else.

Connor MacDonald went into the midfield today, and he easily had his best performance to date. He just provides a bit of class and arrogance that you want. 28 disposals at 75% disposal efficiency, 2 goals, 444 MG, and 12 score involvements. That's the type of statline you would want from Dustin Martin in his prime, not necessarily a 20-year-old in his 31st game, so it's great to see the trajectory he is on. How he went pick 26 in a draft, we will never know.
We may not have taken him either if WC didn't jump in and take the other fella we wanted.

If you dont see the vision at this point I cant help you
I seen the vision a long time ago man and I’m a believer

Lloyd Meek was the highest rated player on the ground with a rating of 23!!!

Newc will have improved his average a fair bit to climb further into the top 10 of the ratings with a healthy 19.8.

He and noodle rucked really well. When they were outmatched, they were able to nullify their opponent, they both ran all day.
It's a pity there was a few times their teammates didn't time their run, making a simple handball tough as a result

Lewis is the second best KPF in the competition after Jezza. He has had an impact in every game he’s played.

I made the point during the week that Lewis was better than Naughton and I am not backing away from that ever. Lewis had some done periods today where he was being led to the ball, but he is a great target, has good hands to set up teammates and a bloody good set shot for goal.

CMac has played too many games for RS.

I can’t believe a commentator would have little clue as to who is eligible and who isn’t for the RS. He played 10+ last year

“I used the phrase at one stage last week that it's a form of tanking, what they're going down the path of, and I'm not backing away from that”

Duke is a GUN. Commentators are loathe to give him the sort of credit he deserves but he will force feed them through elite performance. Not perception, not popularity but actual performance.

And those working at opposition clubs will watch on as our next premiership team is built. Wondering how did they do it.

Meek was massive after quarter time. Really turned it around and used his size. Real presence. Easy to forget he has only played 26 games.

Whoever they were, they shouldn't be involved in footy. Anyone who thought, or thinks. Jai Newcombe has reached his ceiling are absolutely pure and utter clowns.

He is a star, and he's only getting better, he'll be a top player in the competition soon enough.
Rob McCarthy said in the pre season that it was a motivator for Jai to prove them wrong. He's certainly doing it

Thought he was good. I certainly do think Player Ratings do a better job at measuring impact than fantasy numbers, Newcombe's game not even breaking the 100 mark is baffling. Third highest rated player, behind Meek and Dunkley, is much more accurate.

Connor Mac will be the pick of the litter down the track. Just has it. Build him up and he will play the Dusty role I reckon
Exactly right. His performance today, or at least his statline, was that of Prime Dustin Martin. And I can see similarities in his role. As you say, he could very well be the best we have, and it's fair to say we have quite a few future stars on our hands.

Where do you get this and what does it mean?
The AFL website and its Champion Data's player rating system. It's their model for measuring a player's impact throughout the game.
