Well, just a win , conversion terrible, good too see the kids get a go. But not a team that will win a final not this year. Will need a few older heads if we are to challenge , some will struggle with this on this forum but it’s fact. Like the look of fletcher and Kai both have X factor

He is rigidly inflexible and stubborn.
The expression "rigidly inflexible" is a pleonastic expression. My favourite example of a pleonastic expression is "violent brawl".

The adjective adds nothing.

My lawyer son, wife and I love finding these expressions.

Payne was average yes, but he was very clearly hampered, even more so live at the game. The 50 he gave way was just frustration at not being able to move the way he would like. The turnover kick you could tell was going to happen before he kicked it because at that time he couldn’t put any weight on the other foot.

I thought it was a mistake not subbing him off at half time tbh, but I guess we got the win so can’t be to harsh on it. I just hope it isn’t to bad, as he’s extremely important to how far we go this year.

Joe took 2 contested marks and Hipwood 3 with 10 marks overall. Joe had many slip through his hands I agree but 2 contested marks is basically what you expect.

Can’t be serious about Hipwood though can you? He presented all night and did really well and 10 marks shows that clearly.

Agree Hippy had a good game. Our best fwd last two weeks. His marking was better tonight, but I would like to see him take more clean one grab marks.
This is a big ask I know as our delivery into the fwd line, at times, makes this difficult.
My main issue is our kick down the line style needs more contested marks. I understand that at times, like tonight, this is a difficult ask as the ball was being bombed out of the backline in every direction, especially in the second qtr.
It’s an area where we miss McStays abilities and it’s yet to be covered.

Bailey , well I thought he absolutely stunk it up in the first quarter , selfish play mainly, not using players in better positions. one of the reasons the swannies were excelling at the time.
That is this teams problem or one of the biggest ones atm really poor connection as a team.
Glad he turned it around to hand off some nice kicks to set up play and goals.
Didn't notice his tackling , but apparently he made a few, so good to see. The jury is still out on him imo , jsut his style a million miles per hour is how he plays and that is why he has great games or terrible with over running the ball and missed tackles .
Let's see how we go next week , need to keep Fletcher in , he is a gem, one of the first last night to give us a bit of run and his disposal plus that run is what we have been wanting on the wing especially coming out of defence.

I counted 4, maybe 5, goals directly attributable to Payne. Not bad for a fullback. Plus, and worse in my mind, was a distinct lack of old fashioned heart. Some might call it soft. I would.

The old axiom looks like Tarzan plays like Jane springs to mind.

Bad call. Was clearly injured and could barely run at times yet played through it. If he was a mid and not one of our very limited number of key backs he would have been subbed out

These lapses in Football IQ from Payne are costly and why we need Lester in the team. If Lester had coughed up as many goals, certain people on this board would be posting that Lester never play again.

It's not fact, it's your opinion.

Barring injury, it won’t be Payne making way for Dizzy when he is fit again.

It clearly hurt Fages that Gunston and Rich had to be dropped and the way he spurted out Gardiner's name as one of those missing to a fairly lame question showed that he is loyal to a fault to his older statesmen . So I'm not at all convinced any of them is finished for 2023.

When Payne had a brain fade Fages almost broke down in the box and cupped his head in his hands in a show of raw emotion. We still had the game under control . I think he's put himself under enormous pressure from the various forces that have contrived to come together this year and I hope he's getting the right help.

Eric Hipwood has been a very easy target for commentators and keyboard warriors for some time. His kicking has been wayward, his marking substandard, he has been criticised for not attacking contests or making poor choices or not defending sufficiently. Some of that was warranted at times but he, like so many tall forwards, especially those who are lighter-framed, needed time to develop.

His efforts to get to and impact contests last night was excellent. He leads hard and to the right spots. He runs up the ground to get involved, he is so much more aware of space than he used to be. He is often putting pressure on even if he can’t make the tackle. It has been some time since he looked lethargic while defending.

He was never ready-made like many other talls who are drafted with the expectation that they eventually will be too tall and too strong for defenders. Hipwood came into the team very slight, very young and very raw partly out of desperation for a tall forward presence, lost an important developmental year to an ACL, has struggled to find a role aligned with his strengths. But more and more he is beginning to play the game to those strengths.

He will perhaps never be a big unit who can dominate a game regularly, but if he keeps going he has the ability to develop for a few more years yet. He plays in an unusual forward line that has no one dominant presence like many other teams, but he is playing his role well and opposition coaches will increasingly have to think about the right match up for him. Slowly, frustratingly so at times, his goal kicking is becoming more consistent.

And yet that crazy woman behind me still insists that he should be dropped every week!

The prevalent feeling I get from those close to other clubs is that Hipwood is soft. Some even less complimentary than that.

He's been putting that to bed the last few weeks.

What is up with Fagan, does he personally not like Ryan Lester? Watched the presser and Fagan is running through the players who came into the side and talking about their performances. He mentions all of them apart from Lester. At one point he asks out loud, who else came into the team and instead of answering his own question and mentioning Lester, he blanks him. That was very very poor and very very disrespectful. What is Fagan’s problem with Lester?
That’s interesting because the previous week, when asked about Robertson, he said he wouldn’t comment on individual players.
Hmmmm.

Gardiner should not come in for anybody unless there is an injury. His form does not warrant inclusion. If Fagan has decided there is a hierarchy for the third tall spot, he should base it on form and not his personal preferences. Lester keeps playing well in the role, his numbers are among the best two or so in defence and if Fagan has learned anything from the last three weeks it has to be that form trumps pet status. Lester does not DESERVE to be dropped just because Gardiner might be fit.

Best game I have seen Dev play for sure. He should not be anywhere near the VFL for the rest of the season. Pump games into him, continue to give him some midfield minutes playing in that forward/mid role and he is going to flourish.

I think it was Nathan Barley in the game day thread who mentioned he is offering something unique hunting the ball inside our forward 50 and with his clean hands he is able to set up teammates with clever handballs. He also pressures and runs hard defensively.

Leave him in and re-sign him!

It was great to watch all the young players last night. Ashcroft and Wilmot look like they truly belong now. Wilmot is blossoming into a very good player, somewhat flying under the radar. He is still so young, almost a first year player from an age point of view.

Fletcher is a smart footballer and moves well. He is going to be a gun. How lucky to get access to Fletcher and the Ashcroft brothers. I thought Lohmann worked his way into the game as well and showed some great signs. He has that x-factor, things happen when he is around the play. He took some great marks and I hope we can convince him to stick around for another couple of years as well. Within two years he will have Zorko/McCarthy’s spot if he is willing to stay.

Very odd assessment by them - I reckon Hippy is hard at it and presents at the contest as good as any young forward going around...he is a ripper given his size and body shape.

My criticism of Bailey is that while he has all the skills to become an AA he doesn't put it all out there. He skates. Like Rayner. Could have maybe kicked 4 or 5 last night. Didn't.

Needs to nail it in the tight spots. Hard. Hard at it. I personally think he is a bit gun shy. Anticipates the crunch when it maybe isn't actually delivered.

Fletchers goal was incredible. The instinct to instantly play on and take on his man, and then put the jets on and calmly slot it was impressive, especially for a first gamer. I think most young players would have been over awed and went back behind the mark and played it safe. Very excited by him, I think we have got a ripper.

Give it a rest
Fwiiw I think Lester has earnt a permanent spot after I was a constant sceptic.

He saved us many times last night in situations most of the others would not have. Based on his agility and defensive strength he's a long way ahead of Dizzy on the form of recent games.
