Game Day Round 15, 2022 - Melbourne vs. Brisbane Lions

Melbourne play the territory game better than anyone, we need to get the ball out of the middle.

Problem is we can’t get it out of the midfield and they’ve only got their reserve ruckman in there. Will be even harder come round 23.

You do wonder if we go down and go down badly if this game has any mental scars for the rest of the year but I guess let’s see how the second half plays out first.

deplorable qtr of footy. Just run off our feet again by the Dees. Fages seems to have learnt nothing from previous games. Started well again, kicked poorly again, killed in contested ball and spread again.
Dees mids reading O like he was Gawn. Just lapping it up off him.

We are better than this. Unfortunately we continue to be substandard on the big stage.
Hoping for a better second half.

Lyons is elite at winning contested possessions and clearances but a massive liability on anything with the ball more than 5m away from him. They have spuds like Harmes who are dominating just on the fact that Harmes works so damn hard both ways. No one in their midfield is a one trick Pony... maybe Viney but even he goes hard on the D.

Hes a dud but he’d be our 3rd best mid

I honestly think Melbourne are just way way better than us when they turn it on. Don't think it's for a lack of trying.

I think "Melbourne is a better team" and "Brisbane is a premiership chance" are not incompatible, like some are going on about.

Melbourne can absolutely have a down day, and it only takes one and you're out of finals.

Any other team we can beat when we're not at 100% and will beat if we're at 100%. Melbourne we need to be 100% and they probably need to be 90% or worse.

There's a massive difference between being a premiership chance and being the favourite. Ask Essendon about 1999 - I know a few of you remember that far back.

The doom and gloom on here is a bit nonsensical.

While not ideal, we just don't play the MCG well (Needs to change obviously) and we have plenty of key outs against a Melbourne side hellbent on turning around bad form.

We started well and should have put ourselves up 3-4 goals but couldn't convert. Then they went up a notch and we couldn't match them, the difference is they converted when they got on top. Had we converted, I think this game is closer to level or down about a goal at HT.

I will admit though that I understand why positivity is starting to wane around here. Been around the top for a while now and nothing to show for it nor ever looking like the absolute best team. Still time to find it within ourselves to be that team though, hopefully.

We continue to see a trend of being non competitive in these types of games. I question the ruthlessness of the entire team and coaching staff. All very vanilla

I’d happily give up guys like McStay, McCarthy, Rich or others if we added a midfielder of the same quality. Plus bring in Ashcroft and maybe develop Dev or Bailey as solid midfield contributors and we’d be in a much better position

Yeah I think we need to get another midfielder in for sure.

Agree 100% with all of that. Praying that flagmantle take Melbourne off the board come finals time.

Most of Lyons' clearances are actually Neale's that he's gotten a contested handball from.

It's rare these days for Lyons to win a clearance off his own bat.

I can't knock Lyons' workrate but ultimately he's got limitations and we need to recognise that.

Fagan Greta for the rebuild but he isn’t the coach that is gonna elevate us to win a flag IMO . Didn’t think Ah chee had been bad and yet now he can’t get a game and they giving first gamers a go in a crunch game against flag favourites . Seriously Lyons is done fallen away Badly . Absolute custard leg who would be lucky to kick it 35 metres on a good day . Same thing happens against melb we start well miss easy shots and then we crap the bed when they get a run run .really soft and pathetic stuff .

Teams have shown that you can make up for a star midfield by manic pressure. Richmond, GWS (in their GF year), Dogs (to a degree), Sydney...

We have a star but not a star midfield. We need that manic pressure and we're not picking a midfield to use that.

Availability an issue, absolutely... but we had roughly the right number of kids playing for the St Kilda game (experience vs renewal)... and this game brought in 3 more inexperienced players.
