I think losing the third tall had been monumental for Rayner.

Knows Joe and hippy and Charles patterns and can just get on with playing instinctively around them. And his instincts are superb.

Have not missed the boys trying to 'honour' gunston's leads. That rubbish was painful. And Stoopid. Earn the ball with your lead, don't look for sympathy passes. (to be fair, that came from Fagan, gunston was just caught up in a bad case of stars in the coaches eyes).

Ps on Rayner. How strong is this guy. Opposition come at him full force and he just waltzes through them like they are five year olds. Incredible.
Had he kicked that goal late in the game it would have totally brought the house down. Took a specky up fwd early that wasn't paid & setup a couple too. Just needs to start finishing off some of his great work and he'll be a regular on the highlight reels!

Fagan’s body language and demeanour in the box was terrible tonight. He looked like he was watching his team lose by 81 points. Really stood out.
Lachie Neale has said recently that the team plays best when Fages is on edge a bit, so he can do what ever he wants as far as I’m concerned.
He knows the importance of wins this time of year and percentage, even mentioned top 2 again this week.

Without a doubt. The fact that Fagan dropped him for Gardiner against Hawthorn was mind blowing. He then comes straight back into the side and is playing even better. He is going from strength to strength. He ran 15.4 km tonight, 0.1 km less than Andrews game high, Lester rebounds in straight lines down the corridor and he is quick and powerful. Run down intercept spoil, showed pace and high football IQ in the third was inspirational- applies shepherd, allowing McCluggage to pick up to McCarthy to Ah Chee who marks and goals! Your goal Ryan Lester!
His gut running last night was very impressive. Involved himself in multiple possession chains. Had a great game. He’s undroppable for Gardiner now.

We noticed it and replayed it just after it happened. And laughed.

Easy to go at hippy on that vision but we can't see what else was going on and what hippy was copping. Could be nothing, could be way worse.
Hippy and Cam Rayner have been doing that for years.

Ahh didn't look at the clip in the post.

The clip he showed on tv and discussed was when Joe took the mark and hippy turned around immediately and got up in a Richmond player face clapping and giving him crap.

Not the chess grater.

Wasn't anything particularly bad imo.
Has Dunstall ever watched Shai Bolton closely or the bloke at Footscray who falls over when you breathe on him? There are a few out and out flogs playing AFL and Hipwood is not one of them.

At least Dunkley put the "Recruit of the year" debate to bed. Absolutely dominated in the time he was on the ground - much like our entire midfield. Not really much else to say that hasn't already been said. Dev is gonna be a great player, Rayner played arguably his best game all year, and the return to form for McCluggage and Bailey is great to see.

We won't get to play Yellow and Black witches hats every week (although we will be playing blue and yellow ones next week) but that was a clinical, mature win. Ball movement was a major tick as well - hope we keep that up.

Lester’s running ability has always been a huge asset. What we are seeing now from Lester has always been part of his game. It’s not like he has suddenly worked the game out at 30 years of age. I am rapt that people have stopped their lazy group thinking and have realised that his gut running capacity is huge and the fact that he is putting in efforts like last night is testament to his desire and leadership. It has been a shame for Lester that Fagan has always rated others in front of him, but a joy to see how he has established himself once again. So what has made the difference for Lester this year? It is the return to stellar form by Andrews and the emergence of Payne for one. Secondly, playing alongside McKenna, Coleman and Wilmot means that the backline has changed and developed greater rebound capacity. It also means that we have other players who can compete effectively for ground ball. In the past, a backline with Adams, Gardiner and Rich was really hampered by their lack of ability to contest for the ball on the deck. That job used to fall to Lester in that line up and he struggled to carry it on his own. The other thing that has helped Lester shine this year is that he has been able to bring our defense together by directing traffic and making our backline cohesive. We are now functioning defensively better than we have since our rise in 2019 and when the defence looks good, so do individual defenders.

Hippy and Cam Rayner have been doing that for years.

Also important to note that the Dunstall quote about getting one on the chin wasn’t about Hipwood’s goal celebration. He brought it up at halftime before the goal was ever kicked in relation to Hippy getting into a Richmond player after they let Joe take a contested mark. His idea was that you should celebrate your teammate’s success instead because that’s ultimately a positive thing.

His point has some merit but the media decided to make it about his goal celebration which didn’t even happen yet.

I feel like he's always been like that when coaching from the box. Doesn't really worry me. For his own sanity he should probably break it up and coach from the bench a bit because he seems to mellow out a lot more there.
Can't help but feel it might be the opposite - I think I recall him saying when coaching from the bench you need to keep a positive attitude to avoid it impacting the players, so I do wonder if what we see in the coaches box is the real thing and moving back down just adds extra mental pressure.

It's also worth noting that the telecast only shows the coaches generally when their team is in trouble or doing something stupid or putting him under pressure, none of which are conducive to happy looking coaches.

So many “I’m the boss” moments from Cam Rayner. Conor McKenna does an incredible amount of unrewarded running. Mounting injuries a concern. “Long bombs to Snake” really needs to be put away while we don’t have a Snake. Richmond were alarmingly poor. Umpires craptastic as ever; pay marks you bastards.

This place next week when Gunston is selected
He’ll come back in, Rich won’t. But Fagan will bring Gunston back.

I don't see why anyone would have an issue with Fages selecting Gunston to play in our ressies to demonstrate his fitness and worthiness to be selected in the senior Lions team ... ;)

I thought Berry and Wilmot were fantastic in the first half. Hugh looks to be back in form in a big way as well, and Ashcroft was eye catching.

Agree 100% with Dunstall on the taunting rubbish. I remember making a thread on the main board about it a couple of years ago. Certainly something I hate, and in my view has crept in to sporting culture in recent times. See it a fair bit at school with the kids and the 'loser symbol', having become a big part of any lunchtime game.

This game really played a few of our players back into form:

Coleman - tackled hard, ran hard, defended brilliantly, used the ball well. I particularly loved the contest in the 1st(?) quarter where he B lined the loose footy and ran through a Richmond bloke to win it for us. He wanted that footy and nothing was gonna stop him.

McCluggage - his movement around the stoppages was phenomenal. Very clean and used the ball well. Back to his best last night.

Starcevich - defended well, intercepted, provided some good ball use out of defence. He's been down on form lately but looked like his old self last night.

If those 3 can maintain their form it will be a huge asset to us.

Gunston playing in the ressies today so will be interesting to see how he goes
Is he playing reserves today? I only saw Ralph’s tweet about having to select him in the ressies because he was named as an emergency for the seniors, but he wasn’t actually going to play for them. Has that changed?

Pee Wee Herman (Umpire 12) wasn’t too bad last night. I didn’t notice him, which was a good thing.

I’m also not a fan but not having a bar of any Richmond fans whinging about it after the ridiculous defence a few years ago for lynch pushing an opponents face into the ground.

Last night's team was the best balanced team we've had in all year. McKenna ,Wilmot and Lester are giving us that spark we've been missing for 4 years.

Of course it helps when your m/f has a day out.

The only player you could possibly consider as forcing their way into this lineup , barring injuries , is Zorko.

Yeah its not a Hipwood specific issue, which Dunstall acknowledged.

Could give a like to every post in this thread. Wins like this do that.

The only one missing from our best team is Zorko. Better sub than Fort,

Zac Bailey is playing with a harder edge.

Hugh McLuggage 3 votes.

I don't think I have ever seen a debutant fit into a team like Jasa F.

I reckon the boys have been told to use Ashcroft more. Until now he did a lot of unused running, but last night his linkup work was top class. makes us a better team.

Did not see much ot Payne. Saw nothing of Riewoldt. Another scalp for Jack. So Harro can be Harro. Gun combination.

Linc kicked 3, but I would drop him before Dev. His manic pressure lifts us.

JBerry v Macintosh was fascinating. 2 guns broke even.

Joey brings a ranomness that keeos you enertained.

Give this backline some time together, and they will be up with the hardware department (2001-2004).

All in all. a night well spent:)

edit - Rhino Lester brinks leadership to then backline equal to what Hodge did.
