How about key stats for the year then?

In case you can't read, this is his worst season.

Would you like some more? Or do you have any to backup your view? Or would you again like to say the stats disagree with me?

What stats am I actually meant to be looking at in this graphic. You do realise the vast majority of these are irrelevant for a small defender? Like ffs you have goals, clearances and hit outs in there hahaha. You dont even include disposal efficiency or turnovers like you were whinging about.

Its his best season according to AFL player ratings. But maybe stick to AFL fantasy points which is aimed at your level (little kids)

He is the fourth best kick in the team going by kicking efficiency. Thats the stat that disagrees with you.

Alex Witherden will never be a hill I die on but I think his actual defending has been much better this year.

He's not playing as a loose man anymore, he's a stopper and it makes sense that his numbers are down. And his kicking has generally been more conservative and fine.

Bit of a nothing player, who's position is borderline but I'd still say this is his best season at WC.
People let previous poor seasons blind them unfortunately. It works the other way as well with many turning a blind eye to cole and duggan.

He’s averaging a career high in R, whatever that is. And an equal career high in hitouts.

As we’ve seen with Hough who is apparently having a statistically worse season than last year despite being in AA contention, stats don’t necessarily mean a lot for defenders. Especially the stats you’ve picked.

How about his disposal efficiency? It’s at 80% this year, his second lowest mark since leaving Brisbane but still just below elite. And I assume that’s taking into account his 68% today.

The stats that matter today. He had 6 kicks for 3 turnovers. Cost us goals in the 2nd quarter.

Cannot trust the guy to take aggressive kicks, only the plodder safe kicks.

Yeah he tries hard though, not saying he doesn't go when its his turn.

Team for next week

HEdwards, Barrass, Hough
Duggan, Mcgovern, Hunt
Maric, Yeo, Chesser
Ryan, Allen, Petch
Cripps, Waterman, Hutchinson

Flynn, Reid, Kelly

BWilliams, Witherden, Brockman, Ginbey
Sub: Cole

In: Kelly, Reid, HEdwards
Out: Rotham, Jones, Darling (Rest)

Hunt back into his best position pushes Cole out. HEdwards is worse for team balance than Rotham but **** it.

Look witho is not our worst problem, but today, as you agreed, was one of his worst games, and I was pulling my hair out at his costly turnovers by foot. 6 kicks for 3 turnovers, and they weren't pressure kicks either from memory.

I lazily grabbed the default key stats tab, because I thought it suggested he is trending down, but yeah I accept they don't reflect the stats that matter for his role.

Can you provide a link to your claims on AFL player ratings? And 4th best kick in the team by efficiency?

I never care about fantasy points and this comment is poor "But maybe stick to AFL fantasy points which is aimed at your level (little kids)" but I did have a pot at you about not being able to read, so lets call it even and move on.

What’s R anyway?

The website wheelo has witherdens profile and has the eagles stats easily ranked. If you have trouble using it let me know.

Rating Points? Other than it colours him as average, I can't say more about it.

So he’s at a career high in ratings points but you say he’s trending downwards? How does that work?

Petch out after kicking 2 goals?

I don't think that'll be happening.
Give it a rest, he got on the end of them from someone else's ball gets after he wasn't seen for three quarters. He's had 6 years to develop as a trustworthy player.
Maric and Chesser have shown to be more reliable than the bloke.

Out: Petch, jones

In: Dewar, Reid

Or best case scenario for petch, he's used as a sub

In: Reid, Out: Hutchinson (Maric or Jones to sub)
In: Kelly (if available), Out: B.Williams (Two rucks not working when neither having influence up forward or around ground. Flynn stays as helps our mids more by being competitive in the taps. Darling to 2nd ruck, hopefully only for short stints!)

Think that’s it for mine - pretty high standard game today. Couldn’t fault the effort. Think MC got it right going in short on mids and playing Ryan and Brockman through there - hope that continues even with Reid/Kelly back.

In : Reid
Out : Hutchinson who’ll need a full game and it won’t be AFL with close to a full list to choose from

Hopefully Kelly is good to return as well but I’m not sure he will be. Definite starter if he’s passed fit

Simpson said Sheed was ticked off to return after training Saturday and that he’d be in the mix for selection. I don’t think he improves what we put out there today through the midfield but I suspect Simpson might. Can see him coming back in especially if Kelly isn’t passed fit

Other than Kelly and/or Sheed I don’t think there’s anyone else that’ll be brought in

As to who joins Hutchinson as on out that becomes a structural issue

Backline is fine. As far as I could tell Rotham played on Langford who managed 2 goals from 7 disposals which is a sound defensive effort. Witherden has been solid enough this season to stay as well

So either a running player comes out or we rethink our tall forward/ruck setup. Do we stick with both Darling and Williams or does one of them make way in the name of team balance - most likely Williams which would force us to find a makeshift ruck to support Flynn

I think for now they’ll persist with the current setup to see if they can get it to work

Means it needs to be a running player to come out. Despite Hunt having a quiet game I think Jones and Maric are the two most vulnerable even though both made contributions today. Probably Maric with Jones to be sub

In summary

In - Reid, Kelly (if fit)
Out - Hutchinson, Maric

Hes a nice 8/9th defender at a club, first in line depth. He is a passable small defender or distributor, but not really good enough at anything to be in a good teams best 22

Last time we faced the hawks we put this team out and got smashed..

I think we will be much better performed.
Reid and TK in. Who cares out.

Didn't someone say Hough somehow statistically is having a worse year, but we all know he isn't? How does that work? Do you make all your points with a question?

Anyway, the point is made, back to his worst yesterday. If this is one of his best years, thats a low bar.

Just to recap:
“Witherden’s having a terrible year”
“You can’t just say that after one bad game”
“Oh really? How about these key stats? In case you can’t read, they show he’s having his worst season”
“Umm, based on one of those stats he’s actually having his best season”
“The point is made”.

Masterful argument.

Great work internet detective.

My point, as I have said in multiple posts, which you ignore to earn your internet points... and I'll repeat again (sorry everyone)... he was bad yesterday, and since he is average at best, which everyone seems to agree with, why do we persist with him?

But that wasn’t your point. Your point was that he’s on the decline. You even posted some “key stats” to show he’s on the decline and explained those stats “in case you can’t read”.

But they didn’t demonstrate that, so you’ve abandoned it and said your argument was actually something else.

If you’re going to be a condescending jerk, be prepared to cop the consequences.
