A drop off in form is ok, it happens and is pretty common.
The drop off in energy is what is concerning for me.

Bailey is out of form for some reason but he urgently needs to fix up these silly free kicks.
Nankervis (Ruck) leads the AFL for free kicks against with 43 against to just 22 frees for. That's 195% more frees against him than for him
Bailey (For/Mid) is sitting 4th in the AFL with 30 against him but only 8 for him. That's 375% more frees against him than for him

You think he’s getting a game as a small forward? Not at the moment as his forward craft isn’t great. They might be trying to give him some more exposure in that forward role to give him another skill. Means he can fit in as a mid/forward in our best 22. I’d prefer he just play on the ball...

Hey a few haven’t put Hugh in the best. I was going to do it as a joke and change it later. Could anyone who did it explain their reasoning?
Form/energy is what prompted me to think of Covid and how it may have affected him...
..time will tell, hopefully back to the old Zac by the finals..
Zac was badly out of form well before he had Covid MM.
A few big pack marks and goals last few weeks. Would like to see more of course but I think he's building slowly.
Pressure is an issue though and as I've said previously is definitely a negative of playing 3 big forwards, the pressure element suffers.

Last good game was the second half v Freo? Weird one too, he was basically anonymous in the first half and then kicked 4 goals, a few of which were pretty outrageous.
No point dropping him, have to hope he finds his form. Too good a player to waste playing VFL.

Nobody has indicated Sharp stays ahead of Bailey
Posters are just stating the obvious about Bailey's recent form.
He is well below his usual output since missing the Melbourne game due to HS Protocols
Prior to that his form was a bit of a roller-coaster with good games mixed with not so good games
I mentioned his free kick for and against as this is not something new for Bailey
Bailey had a good 2021 year, but he still led the AFL in free kicks against in 2021 with 45 against but only 20 for
2nd Cripps 45/46
3rd Oliver 45/43
You get some leeway in this area when you are playing well
He needs to fix up his technique because his % in this area is way out of whack to his playing position
The large proportion of free kicks in AFL are to do with tackles
In 2021 Bailey only laid 68 tackles to Cripps 86 and Oliver's 136
Bailey should have given away less and received more on those figures alone

Yes he did play well.
At the risk of a pile on, my view is if Gardiner has not re-signed then we get games into Payne, yes Peter Wright kicked 4 on him and a couple of disappointing efforts with lack of body (3Q) but considering the forward entries and that Adams was injured, 4 goals not ideal but hopefully he learns.
Yesterday Payne's opponent went scoreless and virtually only had one set shot very early in the game. In an extreme case Payne could also play a Q forward or on the wing.
Throughout the history of the game forwards take marks and kick goals, and occasionally there is very little defenders can do about it.
Zurhaar kicked 6 yesterday, 4 on Grimes
Curnow and McKay kicked 5 each against WC with Barrass playing
Lewis kicked 5 in the first half against Crows
On another note even though I am neutral on Matho, I was glad to see him take it up to the Giants and he played well and hopefully holds his spot. I would give Lyons a rest or VFL, and hopefully that spurs him along to recapture last years form, but for me Payne and Matho stay, I liked Forts game also. Would rest Zorko for one more week, need him for the finals.

I just watched replay. GWS were atrocious. I’m not getting too excited about yesterday’s win.

Hard to say but how much of that was just them and much was because we made them look that way?
Whether this is right or not, this is what I have been told. Covid does affect people in different ways and was stated that we can be left with "Covid Fog" which is long term Covid. Another issue is where one of our friends has had 2 Covid injections and each time she has physically become unwell. Specialists have told her not to get anymore covid injections. I have heard of others having the same issue. I feel that his lack of form has been too Covid and not knowing he had it. Totally agree with your comment.

yeah it was as bad as anything North or West Coast have put up, or us last week. But hopefully they get a bit of confidence from it
GWS didn't seem to have a plan but that worked well for them when we kept turning it over and they got easy goals on the rebound.
Once we got more confidence that we were too good for them we started to link up a lot better.
I'd be surprised if McVeigh and co. are there next year. Didn't seem much purpose or passion in their game.

To be fair to Bailey, I thought he was very harshly judged on a lot of those holding the ball decisions against that were completely inconsistent with how other decisions were being adjudicated to the point the umps were holding Zac to a different standard.
Three of them were red hot.
I've given up trying to understand whether the umps are going to adjudicate htb. It seems to me that whenever the emotion or building to a crescendo in a period of a game is apparent seems to draw a whistle. Then other times they go on a never pay it mindset for a quarter or two.
It's got nothing to do with the technical aspects of why you would or wouldn't pay it.
Certain players get away with everything. Others are often the patsys.
It's been an extremely contentious issue in the game ever since I started going to the footy in the '60's and we're further away now from consistent and accepted adjudication than we ever were.
If you're a flashy player like Zac as soon as someone lays a hand on you that's seen as getting his right whack whereas if you're a plodder who struggles to pick it up you get given a lot more leeway.
It serves Zac right if he gets impeded . Battlers are just doing their best and have done a good job to lock it in.
The one thing they do zero in on every time if they see it is when you drag the ball in under you. You're done every time for that. Unless you're Selwood.
Its definitely who the player is as to whether umps will pay a free or not and or to a differnt standard. Weve seen that with Mitch Robinson over the years. I mean they just showed examples on First crack of Ginnivan not being paid high tackles in yesterdays game - I agree with them to - but Pendelbury did the exact same thing not worse and the ump paid him the free. The bias of umpires in our game is sickening - I dont know why the afl or the afl media never address the issue or are the afl media instucted not to?

Dont be bias for starters which umpires clearly are depending on who the player in question and hold the same standard to a first game or a 35o gamer. In the example i sighted why would an ump pay one free to Pendlebury for identical head high where he dipped into it and raised his arm yet Ginnivan had his head ripped off on 3-4 occasions and not one free - that is out and out bias , not human error be it consious or otherwise. Why was Zac penalised on 3-4 times the moment he took possession of the ball when others had way more time and didnt correctly dispose the ball? Its not human error when it is repeated bias and it needs to be addressed or do we need to further protect these untouchable people for some odd reason.
If you obviously exaggerate contact, umps won't give you a free because they are less sure whether you're faking or exaggerating. If you earn a reputation for it... it's your own fault. Ginnivan has made his bed. So has Joe. Slightest touch and Daniher flies across the sky.
Umpires have bias, and that is never dealt with - the stats show clearly that home teams get more frees, and that Vic teams get more frees. That needs a lot of work. More than being aware of players who milk it.

Rewatched the second half. The frees to matho we there - he goes low to pick up the ball and gets nailed. Not diving for frees, just no sense of self preservation.
First time I have seen Robbo make sensible bash and crash decision. Was running back with the flight to the top of the 50 and a humongous GWS player was running forward. He looked head and shoulders taller and 30kg heavier. Would have been carting Robbo off on a stretcher if they'd collided at full pace.
