Neale’s turnovers and poor choices in the last were clearly a product of fatigue. He was sensational for most of the game and his 32 disposals, 9 clearances and a goal will be enough to pick him up another 3 Brownlow votes.
He's got to be a sneaky chance to nick another one this year. I wouldn't have him as favourite, but we've won enough and he's been fantastic in most of them without a heap of obvious midfield vote stealers...

Will get offered three and take two with an early guilty plea, in the hope of playing finals, if they make it.
No discount for early pleas any more.
We were good But a pass mark this year is making the GF so we need to be a lot better than good
Well that's one way to set us up to disappoint.

Honestly, if we don't win the premiership I'll be disappointed - especially after our consistent build-up year to year. But BS like the Dogs game and the GWS game and injuries can easily derail it, and I struggle to hold stuff out of our control against the team. The games where we lose when we're smashed because of a lack of effort or intensity - that's our failure. The games where we lose because of some stupid decision or other, I struggle to blame them for it.

What. Im astounded by that. Finish top two and get an armchair ride into the GF if we win both games at the Gabba. Isnt finishing top 2 what all clubs are chasing in a year? I dont get your reasoning at all.

Obviously top two is preferable, but as I said - I don't think it is the difference between us making the GF or not. If we're good enough, we will win away.

Huge chance .

Who are the dangers ?
**** me, was just checking and found he's the favourite! That's not exactly "sneaky chance" territory. Oliver would've been my tip.

He's favourite with the bookies ;)

He's biggest vote stealers have traditionally been Lyons (well down this year) and Zorko (spent less time in the midfield). Clug hasn't really shown he's a big vote getter so far in his career.

Interestingly the AFL Brownlow predictor has him equal 4th at the moment (before this round).

It's an interesting one. Our record in finals on paper is really poor. But in 2 of them we were completely robbed. Last year we were cooked but still robbed. And in our first year we played ok but were inexperienced and a little overawed.

Oliver is the one who everyone woke up to was a great player last year so the umps don't feel guilty about gifting him a few votes.

I feel it's Oliver's year but if he stinks it up in the last 2 and Lachie can get a BOG or even a vote or two then it could be close.

At the ground, I thought much of what Rayner did was very good. A lot of getting to positions to be an outlet for the player with the ball when there wasn’t much other movement. Plus he is using his bulk more confidently to burst through.

The defenders looked better as a unit. Answerth’s most solid game for a while.

The midfield seemed to finally get that at centre clearances they don’t have to win every clearance, just not lose comprehensively. Then they get to reset and go again. Beating Carlton’s “all star” midfielders was a big take-away. I think Matho makes a difference in doing a share of the grunt work along with Lyons and Clug and Lachie have more opportunity to do the fancy stuff.

Brayshaw and Oliver of course.
Brayshaw has been clear BOG in 3 games that I can clearly recall and I don't see most of their games so yeah , he could romp it in if he's the young guy on the up where he's a lot better than everyone realises and the umps get it right before everyone else. Like a Fyffe or an Akermanis.

It’ll be our 4th year of being setup well to make the GF so the excuses start to run out

Agreed, would be a lot more concerned if our window was closing which despite what some people say just isn't true. If anything our older players are the ones that let us down more often than not imo and with good replacements in the reserves and with the timing of Ashcroft coming in I think we're well set for another few years at the top yet.

I'll be sick if they start trotting out character references from prominent Melbourne people of his behalf as if that justifies anything. Love Vossy, but what he said on First Crack doesnt cut it and rightly King said he deserves 2 weeks. Who the player is shouldn't matter, but the act as you said was low on a really fair player who deserved better and a safe workplace.

Given the concussion protcls are 12 days, does that rule Cal out for the following Friday night game to?
Was thinking the same. 12x24 hr periods says Cal good for a 7.30 start Friday.

Yep, there times in the last quarter we played on fast that lead directly to goals. We where 8 goals up the first time, there was no need for it, we where 6 goals up the second and again no need for it….and so on and so on…

I think they over compensated for last week when we went into our shells. I think they wanted to be proactive about it this week…. Next time we will get it right!

If we hadn't stunk it up against Richmond and Essendon we'd be clear 2nd with potentially 2 home finals.

So on that count only ourselves to blame.
Thought we’d drop the bombers game after the amount of outs we had. The other real bad one that was always going to cost us was that Hawks game. Another one where we let a lead slip. Think we were up by 4 goals with momentum halfway through the third. Still dunno how we ended up losing that one.

But you get what you deserve. If we miss top 4 this year it’s definitely on us.

I know 'glass half empty' is popular on this board, but you're completely underselling our defensive transition running, pressure etc. We caused turnovers and punished them. It was a very good 3 quarters.

It was the same in the first quarter and a bit last week too - putting a fair bit of pressure on, causing turnovers then leading to fast transition. Its how quickly things go to water when we don't bring that intensity that is the problem.

Had a silly amount of talls out for the Hawks game; No Joe, Dan or Marcus (I have a feeling dizzy missed it too but not sure) - Sicily dominated hippy in his second game back and intercepted at will leading to lightining fast transition the other way.

Plenty of other probelms with both that game and the bombers one, but I'd say for all our problems if we hadn't had such a hit to one part of the team (talls for the hawks game, the backline for bombers) we probably still win despite that.

Is that not the same for most teams though?

i dunno, it is pretty evident that when teams get a roll on they roll right over us. Today we were lucky that Carlton did it too late. It is our achilles heal and i reckon every team knows it.

Matho is a bloody legend.

Overlooked. Told he has nothing to offer the ones, you belong in the twos.

Kept up his energy and love of the club.

And when given the opportunity, he took it.

Good on him. He's my new Mitch.

And every team knows we can get a jump on them on at the start of the game. Doesn't help them stop us though.
