Personally I think people can forget just how high a level AFL football is league wide. Even North who I’d say are the clear worst team in the comp, can have a good game and really make it tough for opposition teams, the best team still usually comes out on top. As people have pointed out Port played their best game of the season against us and I don’t care what they’ve dished up since then they were really good at applying pressure that game. Essendon probably played their best quarter of the season against us in the 1st, we weren’t blown out, we steadied and had a pretty comfortable win. North didn’t show up. Geelong were the better team on the night but how much better can they be than that? We have a ton of internal improvement from that game and still only lost by 10 points away from home. Collingwood actually played quite well for periods last night, first quarter they played well, end of third and start of fourth they made it tough. Again we steadied and got the job done. We’ve had a very similar start to the season as Melbourne imo, both doing what they have to do at this stage while also trying a couple new things in the team.

Yeah I understand that and do get where you are coming from. Obviously id take the wins to get us into the position to challenge for a flag.
I am just frustrated with how we are playing at the moment, even though we have been winning.
Look I get totally frustrated during a game with certain things our players do and don't do and likewise the team.

But the aim is to win the game. Once done move on and look to next week. You don't have to play well necessarily to win games , just better than the opposition.

The Harris 50 was bad. But the Ah Chee one was also ridiculous.

This video captures it from about 18 seconds in.

Ah Chee is running with Sidebottom. Sidebottom suddenly peels off and runs around De Goey. Ah Chee doesn't follow, sees Sidebottom has gone there, so keeps running. Was never near De Goey who was on the other side of the mark. The umpire seems to spot Ah Chee without an opponent and assume the worst and just blows the whistle instantly. So 50m and a goal because the umpire wasn't watching and assumed the worst.

Surely for such a big penalty you can't as the umpire see the aftermath and assume a 50m. If you see a player on the ground and his opponent next to him, you can't assume he has been decked.

A 50m like this will cost a team a game soon and there will be some furious fans.

Congrats Lions, too good :thumbsu:
Congrats Lachie Neale 200 little champ:thumbsu:

Thought we controlled the game for most it. Will always be momentum swings. They made a little comeback but we shut the gate. Job done.

If anything we are still a little bit in the phase of some players rising and playing well whilst others drop off rather than a complete team performance every weekend. It is a bit of cycle but you can see we are nearly out of it.

I hate these 50’s but the rules pretty clear and Ah Chee isn’t the smartest footballer.

Ah Chee can follow his player but the minute he goes the other side it’s a 50.

The aftermath as you call it is all that matters.

I don’t see anyone suggesting the team is shit.

There are some who are searching for signs we are more than an early exit from finals team, I fall into that catagory.

I think it’s ok if people are starting to be a less happy to just be good after 4 years, and to want us to go to the next level.

You can be ultimately optimistic and happy with where the team is at, and also frustrated with constant ugly wins and loses when the team is better than us. You can critique our current form, ask for more and be happy with a win.

As the saying goes, the best wins are those where you get the 4 points but still learn something. That should be us right now.

Premierships are not won in April but formlines, Habbits, confidence in ability in big games and character is built all season long and right now.. we are just spluttering along.

I am confident we will improve, for me winning next week (massive danger game) and Sydney away is a huge test.

Right now, I reckon Sydney roll us by 40 points at home, because we are playing super average footy againts lowly teams.

Happy with 4-1 obviously - and the great news is, our best footy is ahead of us.

Ah Chee could have followed Sidebottom. But he also has the option of continuing to run away from De Goey, which he did. The rule is not that you have to follow your opponent no matter where they go.

He didn't run straight out of the area though, he continued running past the man on the mark into the 50, if he had turned and run straight to the center of the ground he would've gotten away with it. Hate the rule but it has been officiated like that for the last couple seasons.

yeah and i'd just add re unhappy fans, it's not that i think we are dire. It's just being more proactive about improving, especially given finals losses

Obviously winning games is great, but we are well past 2019 at which point any win was a blessing. We want to win well but more importantly address weaknesses. And being a bit more ruthless at selection, including dropping players at times even after a win, should be part of that.

Was also smart by Sidebottom. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Have we not been proactive at trying to get better? We've tried guys in new positions, we're starting to play different styles during the same game and Cocky was dropped last week so the whole coaches pick favorites is just a myth. Just because they haven't worked straight away doesn't mean we're not trying different things to improve.

Sydney have actually overperformed to be 3-1 so far. Very disappointing against the dogs, should have lost to the Kangas, and were absurdly accurate whilst geelong was very inaccurate. They have been going pretty poorly in the middle too but have been efficient up forward - quite like us. I watched them against the Dogs and they were lucky the dogs don't know how to kick goals - made the margin look close when they were belted.

Entirely possible and I'd say probably likely that we lose at the SCG but don't think it will be a 40+ margin.

The worst decision of the night was the holding the ball against Darcy Gardiner, kick to him was called play on and he was grabbed almost immediately with 1 arm pinned, clear case of no prior opportunity, umpire got caught up in the moment and paid the free.

I'd be stunned if in the umpire review the umpire looked at that and didn't admit he got that call wrong.

Nah just watched my first game. Wow look at those big men fly. I thought it was unfair the Collypies got to wear sunglasses.

By the time the umpire sees Ah Chee and blows the whistle he is actually next to the man on the mark. Umpire was clearly guessing. You don't have to stop and just run sideways if you are Ah Chee. Just get out of the protected area. He was already IN the protected area when Sidebottom left him, so he can't just disappear. He left the protected area, was running away from De Goey and never got close to him because De Goey was on the other side of the mark.

Yes Sidebottom was playing for it. Doesn't mean it was there.

No but you do have to stop and run sideways to get out of the protected area, can't just keep running parallel to the kicker and man on the mark. There were a lot of horrible decisions last night but that one I didn't have a problem with.

Clearly i am in the minority. See plenty of those ones not paid when there is an opposition player involved.

By the time Sidebottom deviated, considering Ah Chee was past De Goey, his path seemed entirely reasonable to me.

If you paid every one like that there would be an extra 5 paid a week. Umpires generally note what the opposition player is doing and consider whether it deserved a 50m penalty. This umpire seemed to see the aftermath and just make an assumption.

I get the Ah Chee 50, what is frustrating is the other 5 or so times it happens in a game that they don’t call it. Consistency is the key

There was one where Charlie literally had his kick smothered by Lipinski running through the protected area, lead to a shot on goal for them.

lol you’ve just proven you don’t know how that rule actually works.

What Sidebottom did or didn’t do have no bearing on the 50 awarded against Ah Chee. Ah Chee needed to stay with Sidebottom otherwise it’s a clear 50, if you don’t get that then I can’t help you.

Have a read of Laws of the Game rule 19.2 (D) pages 57 & 58 will help you out.
