Clearly i am in the minority. See plenty of those ones not paid when there is an opposition player involved.

By the time Sidebottom deviated, considering Ah Chee was past De Goey, his path seemed entirely reasonable to me.

If you paid every one like that there would be an extra 5 paid a week. Umpires generally note what the opposition player is doing and consider whether it deserved a 50m penalty. This umpire seemed to see the aftermath and just make an assumption.
At least learn the rules before you spout absolute dribble.

Not really, the Charlie one should be paid everytime, so should the Ah Chee one. Says more about the inconsistency of umpiring rather than the rule itse
Players already try to game the rule like Sidebottom.

If it were interpreted like that every time it would become a blight on the game with constant attempts at run-past 50s.

There needs to be some latitude given to players when their opponent tries to game the rule. That is what usually occurs.

There was one where Charlie literally had his kick smothered by Lipinski running through the protected area, lead to a shot on goal for them.
Yeah this at the time seemed very suss, came from behind and smothers the kick before playon was called it seemed. Like how was he able to be where he was haha.

The Ah Chee one is always gonna get called. Either follow the player directly or make an obvious movement to change direction to get look like you are getting out of the protected zone.

lol you’ve just proven you don’t know how that rule actually works.

What Sidebottom did or didn’t do have no bearing on the 50 awarded against Ah Chee. Ah Chee needed to stay with Sidebottom otherwise it’s a clear 50, if you don’t get that then I can’t help you.

Have a read of Laws of the Game rule 19.2 (D) pages 57 & 58 will help you out.

You've made a good point Brett, I am just not sure it is the one you intended. Sidebottom went behind De Goey in this instance. Here is what the rule says about that. I have added italics.

A player of the the same team as the Player with the football enters the additional protected area behind the Player on The Mark. What should occur? No other players (of either team) are permitted in the Protected Area. In the same way as if player of the same team enters the Protected Area currently, the umpire should re-set The Mark and clear out the additional Protected Area behind the Player on The Mark.

Roberson just needs to be given more time playing on ball . Was a contested beast and we been getting smashed in middle recently . Have Bailey , Clugga on the outside breaking away . Ah chee been very impressed with shows toughness and is an excellent runner . Was a top 400 runner over in WA at school level back in the day .

Ah Chee is now a legitimate best 22 player for me. Watching at the ground I was impressed by how hard he works and wing seems to suit him pretty well. I would have him as the most improved player so far this season. His improvement hasn’t been steady but it is taking hold now and his confidence seems to be growing.
He generally seemed to lack confidence and team mates always get around him to encourage.

Ah Chee was a big shining light for his game last night. That tackle on Crisp in the last few minutes was a brilliant one.
Ah Chee might have had a good game, but he owed us one with that tackle. Could have killed him when he played on to (dis)advantaged on our half forward flank after Daniher ran down Sidebottom. Which resulted in a turnover and the pies going the length of the ground and DeGoey scoring a goal to keep them in touch. 7 minutes to go and four goals up, he needed to let Daniher go back, take the kick and wind some time off the clock. Prone to way too many brain fades still.

Given the lack of HTB consistency, I wouldn't be surprised if he assumed it was play on.

honestly all Ah Chee needed to do was raise his hands to his head, change his angle by 2-3 degrees more, sheepishly shake his head while lowering it and the umps would go "ah yup, he's trying his best right there..."

same with Gardiner, if he had gone to ground and then flopped and wriggled and made a big scene where he is 'trying to get the ball out' the umps would have been so happy and given a ball up.

our boys need to do some improv work and work on their physical comedy. the umps need more guidance!!! how do they know when to call the whistle if we don't help them out.

His 2-3 yard closing speed onto the contest is exceptional. Which is why the opponent didn't see him coming with that last tackle.

He slowed when he thought he heard the whistle, but then had Howe heading towards him so kicked the ball under pressure. When the umpire called out "play on" after the kick he put his hands up like "how is it play on?"

Pretty clear to me he probably didn't hear the whistle and Howe's pressure made him think he was going to be tackled and HTB called against him.

He didn't realise it was a free.

Lots of negativity towards our team. Sitting in the crowd it was going to be a 4 goal win most of the night and thats what it seemed like all the way through even the last Qtr. Fagan will be a bit angry with the drop off in the last bit but it's 4 points and we move on.

Poor Darcy Gardnier went from bad to worse, he had a bad game and a week off, or 2 will do him the world of good and the positive thing is Payne will get a shot. Nice outcome we have an almost like-4-like replacement.

Darcy Fort looking our recruit of the year so far, hitting the score board and helping around the ground, seems a smart enough footballer, good recruiting.

Yep, I'm a glass half full kinda guy.

Other than that, same team next week, looking forward to it.

What do you mean, back to?
We have not played a 3 tall forward 2 ruck set up.
Yep Joe replaced Stef Martin.. What we have now with Fort, Joe and McStay was the same.
I do worry we get too heavy with 2 ruck and 3 tall forwards.
Although I also think the times Joe rucked best was a break even in the ruck.
Most teams have 2 rucks or a forward who can do better then break even.

The way Joe's going now and improving every week ,getting a lot more assured with his marking and kicking it would be fairly reckless imo to get him back rucking ,taking centre clearances and whatever else. He's still presenting on the wings anyway.

I'm even not overwrapped on him taking the occasional boundary stoppage because he's a strong physical presence when the ball hits the deck around the goals.

Sydney have actually overperformed to be 3-1 so far. Very disappointing against the dogs, should have lost to the Kangas, and were absurdly accurate whilst geelong was very inaccurate. They have been going pretty poorly in the middle too but have been efficient up forward - quite like us. I watched them against the Dogs and they were lucky the dogs don't know how to kick goals - made the margin look close when they were belted.

Entirely possible and I'd say probably likely that we lose at the SCG but don't think it will be a 40+ margin.

I don’t think Sydney are especially good right now, it just feels like the sort of ‘like for like’ game we arn’t playing well enough to win.

Obviously just my opinion. But by performance this season alone. Yes...Carlton have looked a lot better than us apart from their game last week.
I cant comment on Saints or Freo as I havent really watched alot of their games.

I’ve watched Carlton and have been very bullish on their game this year. Their midfield is really strong. But they don’t have the forwards and backs at the same level, so the midfield are burning out. Going to get worse as the year goes on.
