Have not been a Ah Chee fan since he came to the club but that last few weeks he's going hard at it. He has a fire in the belly at the moment. Very aggressive. Good to see. The game itself I felt we were outplayed. Collingwood were extremely quick with ball movement. Their ground ball gets and sling shot we couldn't cope. We just dominated the I50's and were pretty clutch in front of goal.

Onto Gardiner. Not sure I like what I see. He constantly gets beaten and is always pushing the limits with his actions. Something you'd expect from a forward. I'd be keen on Lester coming in for him. Cool headed bloke, always reliable. Just a bit of plodder.

Pros

Neale - 2nd Qtr huge
Ah Chee - Big moments
Daniher - Consistent once again, good year
Hugh - Much better tonight defensively. Silk with ball in hand
Bailey - Mr Clutch

Cons

Gardiner - Discipline
Umpiring - #12 mostly
Jarrod Lyons - Extremely poor defensive efforts off ball

Other than that. Enjoyable night. Crowd was good.

I thought Robbo's first term was excellent. Sadly was close to unsighted after that.

While this is almost certainly his last season I'm still struggling to see who immediately comes in, works within the team structure and makes more of an impact than him. One thing I will say about him is that his pressure is consistently strong - he's good at putting his hands up, making himself seem big and worrying people out of possessions. One of those things that the likes of Sharp wouldn't be able to replicate if they came in. If there's a better option (and our list is pretty good, there likely is) I'm all for it but I can see why the coaching staff likes having him in there.

Wouldn't be surprised if Kiddy comes in and Answerth moves to the wing - especially after Fagan mentioned that possibility in the presser.

I like the look of this, with winnable games ahead and quality players either coming back or in the wings.

Others have noted it too, but Ah Chee has really stepped up this year. He gets flipped around a bit, which would make it hard, but he is in career best form. Taken the aggression up a notch.

Next five: Suns, Swans, Eagles, Crows, Hawks. Only one of them are currently in the top eight.

I watched at a pub, can anyone confirm that was arguably the worst officiated game in living memory? It just looked so horrible both ways.
It's the worst officiated game this week!

I don't know that it can trump the 42-16 disparity literally last week. Imagine that frustrating five minutes where they decided to find something in every contest going against us, but extend it to about a quarter and a half.

The HTB call on Gardiner was absurd. Ball was touched, wrapped up immediately with one hand pinned and both legs entwined with the pie player as he got twisted around. Literally his only other option was to throw or drop the ball which should be a free kick.

Nah. No prior. If he'd released the ball and at least made an attempt to kick it it's play on.

If he misses his foot it's a free kick too though, and it's bloody hard to hit your foot while being thrown around.

Only bet if they're going to pay that with no prior is to fake it being knocked out and drop it to advantage, but I thought that's what we were meant to be getting away from.

I don’t imagine that Gardiner will be suspended, but in the unlikely event he is, I would play Lester before Payne. We need a little more composure in defence at times and I think Lester’s football IQ would help us down back.
Attention all Bigfooty posters.

3KZ is back

No it isn't. No prior; attempt is good enough.

If 3KZ can have Lester back, can I have Walker back as well:)?

Controversial if true. Source?

B: Starcevich Andrews Gardiner
HB: Rich Adams Zorko
C: Robinson Neale Ah Chee
HF: McCarthy McStay Bailey
FF: Rayner Daniher Cameron
Ruck: McInerney Lyons McLuggage
Bench: Fort, Berry, Robertson, Answerth

Looks a lot more balanced to me with one less small forward. Off the bench Fort rotates in the ruck and the resting rucks only play forward when the key forwards are off. Berry onto the wing and on the ball Dev on the ball and Answerth an extra back. Will also have the mids spending time forward, Bailey plays 25-30% of the game on the ball and Rayner goes in here and there.

Yeah it was an ugly win, and a win is a win; but if we (Zorko and Robinson, in particular; the latter an expert at it) continue to just smack it on the boot and hope for the best teams like Melbourne are going to lap it up. It doesn't happen once or twice a game, it happens frequently. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but wouldn't want to be tossing that coin and hoping for tails when it comes to the business end of the season.

Agree 100%. We are in a good spot to build up points and put us in a strong position on the ladder come finals time. Winning games is all that matters right now and I dont really get too concerned with how we do that. 4 win 1 loss is a start I would take evry time.
A trend that happening each game & my only concern at the moment is how we get dominated in the ruck and centre clearances when the opposition have a quality ruckman and mids. Grundy beat our 2 guys with ease last night and we struggled last week and every other game except Port in the hit outs. When we do get to finals, how do we stop the Gawn, Petracca & Oliver train when we can't win a hit out or a centre clearance?

Zorko is the least likely of our players to just slap it on the boot.
One of our most creative players with the ball.

4-1 great start to the season.
Beat Collingwood on Holy Thursday and enter the long Easter weekend as winners- Thank you Lions! Will make enjoying the weekend and watching the footy so much more pleasurable.

There are many good points made on this thread. We are doing well to win whilst not going anywhere near 100%. It might be worth factoring in that our boys are use to winning over the last 4 season and doing enough to win isn't always a bad sign. Remember it is about banking wins to get into that top 4.

A few issues- We need Zorko fully fit for the last part of the season. He is still our second best mid and we lack his zip and defensive pressure at the centre clearance.

We don't work hard enough as a midfield defensively. This has been an issue for a number of seasons, Dev Rob is probably our best defensive runner. Bit of a reality check for the lads. I'm sure they are trying to train it.

We can put our foot down and just destroy teams in small periods of time, this is a massive positive. The selection squeeze will get interesting when Hipwood and Coleman come back. Does Daniher become our back up ruckman? Do you use the Rolls Royce to tow the caravan?

Good that we came up against a slingshot and running game plan now but against an opposition who were missing their usual forward line - Mihocek, Elliott etc. We will get a more perfected version of this against Sydney. Gives us time to do our homework.

Commentators were going on about how we seem to struggle when forced to defend and man up while getting stretched across the ground. Apparently Geelong did it too which I didn't notice but in this game it was a bit more evident. May be other teams have found something on how to play us, another thing for coaching group to work on.

Happy with the win and 4-1 start. Puts us in a really good spot for rest of the year.

EDIT: Kai Lohmann was really good. He was able to chase 2-3 defenders back to back creating that added pressure prior to disposal. Didn't cash in but he was always creating some sort of missed kick due to his constant harassment. Good addition to the forward line, he could play defensive forward on playmakers like Caleb Daniel etc. Hope we keep him in.

I don't know what the hell is going on with the coaching but there's just way too many ****ing fumbles at the moment we look like a bottom 4 side thank god we have lachie and joe or we're ****ed we've gone backwards by a mile since last year teams are coming out of our forward line and going coast to coast way too easily.

It is an interesting question in relation to the ruck set up once Hippy gets back, Daniher is playing so well at the moment that you would be crazy to pull him out of the forward line. But we can’t play 3 tall forwards and 2 rucks, I don’t personally believe the 2 ruck set up we are currently working with is providing ANY silver service for our midfield so it’s not going to get any worse with just the one ruck and a Chop out. If anyone else you would have to think Dan as a backup is the only other option, we can’t take anyone from the backline that is for sure.
If we were to leave Fort in there it would mean that Dan would have to make way, which I am not keen on at all.
Neither Fort or Oscar ever jump in the ruck which is very strange, they are actually a little bit too similar in many ways which allows the opposition a clean jump at the ball most times. For a 2 ruck setup to really work, they need to be 2 different types of ruck so the opposition isn’t getting the same looks all the time.
