Time to out that video review back in the box. How that video umpire could call Rioli's kick off the ground as touched is beyond everyone bar the video umpire. If the AFL are going to have a review they need to do what the NRL have dione and have multiple close up cameras. They seem to be relying on one camera angle which most times is inconclusive.
That one was touched. You could see Daniels hand impact the ball

I couldn't and in fact the ball does not deviate and the angle is on the side. I have the benefit of replay and have looked at it several times and there is no way anyone could definitely say it was touched from the vision shown on the telecast. At worst it should have been umpire's call.

Put the responsibility back where it belongs the video review is the last refuge of people who are frightened to make a decision. For over 150 years people accepted the goal umpire's version now suddenly we have technology and it isn't making the situation better. If the man on the spot had signaled touched there would not have been a problem but when it is reviewed, the vision is inconclusive yet it is ruled a point there is a problem.

Biggest take-always for me:

  • Lycett being subbed shows the coaches aren’t blind but were hanging on to hope he would turn it around
  • We were killed by in the clearances (by Bont especially) but turned up when it mattered most. Still very reliant on clearances to be even to score
  • DBJ up forward works well - defensive forwards who can actually tackle and have some speed and contest ability are what suit our 2023 style not flashy players like Rioli (I think we can carry one of those types, especially against teams like West Coast coming up)
  • Having an identity of physical tough, fteam feels very Port but we’ll need system to carry us through when the defensive pressure drops off in games (Which it will as it is hard to sustain)

All differences of opinion on various players aside, like no doubt many I thought we were goneski half way through the final qtrs of both recent games, but geez it was good to see some old Port Adelaide grit come to the fore, regardless of who the coach is, or that we have a lame duck president who will almost certainly dine out on those wins for the rest of the season.

Win, lose, or draw, efforts against the odds like last night and last week are what made the PAFC great, so I'm going to enjoy it while I can.

The way Junior Rioli started last night I thought he was in for a blinder but he fell out of the game in the last three quarters. I suspect Junior is going to be an impact player who can do amazing things in patches. Junior had 7 possessions for the night and I reckon 5 of them were in the first quarter.

While I'm very happy with the win and, particularly the way the team stuck to it and lifted in the last, I don't think a game in those conditions necessarily tells us anything about how we'll go for the rest of the season. The conditions suited our no structure, chaos ball style of game. I suspect we will still be found out in better conditions by better-coached teams.

On Marshall, I acknowledge that it was not a good night for key forwards. However, for the first three quarters, he seemed more fumbly than most of the others out there (the kick to McEntee aside). As I mentioned in the gameday thread, he was being scragged with not support from the umpires but he clearly needed to lift. I'm very glad he did. As others have said, you could say the same for JHF.

I thought the camera clearly showed it as touched but yes, the technology needs a lot of work.

Gutsy win but still sack Hinkley! Took him too long to realize Jonas and Lycett are not best 22.
Interesting to see what he will do with them next week. Bringing them back will show he learns nothing

I’m not seeing your general slagging posts from before half time.
They must have got lost along the line.

Inferring I’ve deleted posts? Scraping the bottom of the barrel now.

So does anybody think some of the changes are being made by other people?

I mean they all work as a team but since Tredrea said what he said it has seemingly made things happen with Ken on the bench, Jonas, DBJ dropped, DBJ to the forward line, Williams getting more game time, Lycett subbed out, etc... seems more tactical.
100% yes.

This is really just proving my point. Geelong and Richmond have won one game from four and one game from five respectively. If you're penciling them in as 'certain losses' then your system is off.

If you think they're a chance against Geelong at Kardinia Park your optimism is clouding your judgment.

Same goes for Richmond at the G. They're a bloody good side at that venue and I wouldn't suggest Port's record there of late is too flash.

Geelong and Richmond of 2023 are not the Geelong and Richmond of years past.

I think the Dogs made the 8 last year on 12 wins?

Extra game this year because of Gather Round so I'm presuming it'll take 13 wins or 12 and a ridiculously healthy percentage to get in.

If he’s the great motivator / man manager as claimed it’s a bit confusing why it’s taken him so long to get to the bench. Especially after many coaches started doing it post the Covid seasons.
No idea why it's taken so long, but he's always had the ability to spark a response following slow starts etc. The players are still responding to him.

I'm not for one minute suggesting he doesn't need replacing btw, just that for as long as he's here, he needs to continue doing it
