The Good

- Jack Payne just announced himself to the footy world. Demolished Curnow.

- Dunkley just played the best midfield game of the season that I have seen so far. That performance will not get the credit it deserves unfortunately. Dismantled the reigning Brownlow medallist. BOG.

- Coaches and selectors pull the right strings again. Time to credit them after a slow start to the season.

The Bad

- N/A

The Ugly

- The pile on, on the new guys in the game day thread, was unpleasant. That thread really brings out the worst in some people. Happy they showed a few detractors up.

Defence is set for the year. I really can’t see a spot for Gardiner. Very much a case of ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.’

Lester is a more versatile player than Gardiner, particularly in terms of his work when the ball is on the ground and adding him really complements Starcevich, giving us two junkyard dogs applying loose ball pressure.
Seeing how you love stats how do you explain Lester’s 1 tackle (same as 2 key forwards and bottom 5 for the team), 7 pressure acts (bottom 4 for the side).

If Gardiner can get fit he’s an absolute upgrade on Lester.

I love hearing from our Victorian supporters who attend games. Especially when we win because there has been some average performances over the years. Also some amazing wins.
The crowd shots from behind the goals always makes me smile. All ages, many different jumpers, scarves and beanies but united in their passion for the Lions.

Happy for both Lester and his number one supporter. Hope your face doesn't get too sore from smiling.

Oscar had 29 hit outs from 88 ruck contests. That is horrible (Pittonet had 48 from 87)

He won clearances because he received 5 ruck frees mostly from Silvagni.

Except Pit gave away 3 free kicks to Oscar, who had 16 disposals, 14 of which were contested. Rucking is more than just hit outs. 10 clearances is huge. Oscar helped us win front half territory all night long. No sure what game you were watching?

One thing I liked about Sharp's game is he kept trying and getting to the right positions. That's all you can do sometimes when things haven't been working for you. And his long kick to setup up that goal was perfect.

I don't get why are some are going so hard on Sharp. He did what he was required to do in his 1st game for quite some time. A big game on the big Friday night stage. Got better as the game went on. Ran hard and filled a lot of holes. Played better than Willmott and that is not having a go at Willmott but cos he ain't a love child he is unfairly reviewed.

Give it a break guys & gals, why does there always have to be a pile on when your preferred player/s don't get picked.

Remember that, as an underage selection, Harry Sharp played the first 2 games in his first season. Did a few things last night that said " this boy can play". Will be a long term player for us.

Jack Payne will retire an AA defender.

Would give Kiddy a rest next week. 2 cramps in 2 weeks? Prior deserves a game.

On TV it looked like Cam was indecisive a few times, and it cost us. Live, was it because he had nowhere to go?.

Harro and Jack are building a beautiful symetry. Would not swap them for any key defensive pair in the game.

Jeez, the final score flattered the blues.

Might have moved the ball forward but it then goes back over his head very quickly. Usually rucks try and get the ball to the skilful, quick mids. Even rucks who can kick unlike Oscar who's one of the lest skilful especially in contested situations

Take out the frees he had 5 clearances from 83 contests and he allowed the opposition first use of the ball

Oh, 1 of the frees and clearances was 6-6-6 violation

After the contest matters when Oscar is beaten and Fort needs to come in to offer more despite Oscar being better at the hitout. Only the hitout matters when Oscar is beaten there but has a better game around the contest, because Fort needs to come in (even though Oscar is still better at hitouts than him). Isn't it obvious? ;)

At the time I thought it was a combination of, mainly, trying to be too unselfish, but also a few times he was forced onto his wrong foot and absolutely did not want to kick on his left.

Except it didn't go over his head. Our front half territory was off the charts in the second and third quarters. You're clutching at straws that don't reflect how the game played out at all. Oscar was huge, you can't discount free kicks that he fairly wins in a ruck battle for being positioned better/strength. Clearly you've got a long-standing bias against him, and have come to the conclusion he is no good. Because on tonight's performance, i'm not sure how you can come to that conclusion otherwise?

I think Oscar has played better games but he was fine last night. Was absolute crickets on here about him last week when he played really well on Darcy and Jackson.

I mean he's quite clearly one of the least effective first rucks around

These hack handballs and kicks forward or winning a free and taking forever to kick it long to a massive pack is better than losing it but if he was more effective in his role he'd be getting it to his mids

A few pumped him up. He was in my votes last week

He deserved to be. He has plenty of deficiencies and Fort is better backup than I thought he was, but I do think the clearances Oscar wins help us a lot, even if some are from frees.

He's never going to be a top ruck in the comp and dominate as a ruck, but he just has to be good enough to compete against the best which I think he's done for the most part this year.

There may be some truth to this. Which I would find incredibly bizarre if it were. I know I've been over this before but I struggle to comprehend how it is possible we are not the fittest team in the comp given the conditions we experience every preseason.
Please REALLY do you know what it takes to play with the pressure and intensity we've been playing with of late...pretty sure we are one of the fittest teams going around.

Please don't misheard me I'm not saying we were bad but I felt it was more them being bad then us being good.

If some of those turnovers were us we would have not been happy
Turnovers come about from our pressure acts and then the perceived pressure sets in , that's exactly what we want. Not sure if you've been hiding under a rock but scores from turnover is what teams strive for. Get a grip and be a bit more positive.

In the press conference Fagan said it was just crap and joked he would have to have a word to Kiddy about drinking more water.
I still think Kiddy isn't quite fit enough yet. He definitely drops off late in games and can't quite keep it up. If he wants to go to the next level he needs to run out games better. The talent is there already

I can't see it on the telecast but rucks seem to lurk more in the middle to make it easier to get to ball ins and stoppages anywhere so get less of a chance to take the big marks given most clubs go down the line. Similarly there's less chance of a one on one contest. When he does get a chance he's solid without being fantastic.

There's been similar results with Lobb when he transitioned from forward/second ruck to a full time ruck because of injuries - his contested marking dropped under similar circumstances.
We do have an issue with our ruck - especially when you see how Gawn, English and Marshall go about it.
