What a journey this off-season has been. A long, winding path. We have encountered werewolves and rumbles. Laughs and tears. Forks in the road. Chaos and calm. Differences of opinion and unlikely alliances.


But one message has rung out louder than any other throughout the off-season:

I am delighted to say that Season 19 is now OPEN FOR BUSINESS! This 15 round season will see a top 8 and 4 weeks of finals (as per AFL finals structure). It promises to be a great season. Let's get into it.

I can't help but feel like one logo has been given prominence here. I know the Royals have a huge one too. But wouldn't it be nice if each club had a banner designed in the same way as the Royals' simply for match thread, announcement and advertising purposes. There's something I may look into when I'm bored. Anyway...

ROYALS: Lost their egotistical full forward in okeydoke7 and gained an egotistical forward in Juggalo Balla among other changes (yep, I'm tagging myself now). Missed the finals again last season and looking to atone.

Player to watch: Wise Guy Sam. Does he care anymore? Will he write more letters? Will he play a prominent position? Who knows really...?

ROYS: Roys, Royals, Gorillas, Royals, I'm so confused right now. Anyway, the Roys lost 3KZ is Football to the Royals...Or is it the other way around? Or something? I dunno, but it's a grudge match OK.

Player to watch: fitzroybulldog. His interactions with Marlowe will be peculiar yet brilliant.

Would have had the Roys in favouritism here but the Royals at home with another pre-season under their belts could challenge the veterans.

GOLD CITY ROYALS
The Royals have a few seasons and the bums of many misbehaving children under their belt now, they'll be feeling like a team that's been around almost forever. Which means they'll both win and lose from their newfound longevity. Firstly, they won't feel like intruders. They won't feel green, they won't feel conscious of other teams staring at them like it's their first day at school. On the neg side, nobody is going to think they're cute anymore. Sexy, maybe, but not cute.

and the man they call Soggy ...


... and supported by the G Troop in Igs, WiGS, Juggs and dainty little Pogs, with able troopers Specky, Easty, Tommy and Fitzey, and despite housing the trash that is 3KZ is Slutball, the Gulf Coast team have the cattle, although the question remains as to whether they have the cows. Some say they have both. The departure of league dictator okeydoke7 should be seen as only a temporary low, and possibly actually a plus ... because he's terrible.

There is no better round than the opener to get a measure on how things are looking, to see whether its gonna be a silk purse season, or another debacle of performances as useful as **** on a bull.

They have a player named after chocolate biscuits. What's not to like.

The Roys return vibrant as an ashen pile of haphazardly stacked corpses can be, with an injection of excitable new blood, flesh, bone, gristle, and pasty mottled skin with weird dips at odd places. This team has their name etched into a placard at their spot in the league - because they'll never move from it either up or down the pecking order.

Gorilla headquarters do offer a brand new victim - I'm sorry - a brand new captain in joyously enthusiastic fitzroybulldog ...

... who now does everything because he was too nice a guy to say no. Beyond fb, the same stern and dismayed faces of Reardo, Fred, Freakie and this here little black duck, with established top blokes such as Klim (barbecue), Mooch (cheddar), royboy2 (geometric)and Slax (beer - its not relevant but its the only word he knows), will be plentiful framework for tyros Loonerty, Mighty P and FreeToeKnee to learn from and do exactly as we say.

The Roys look good, but they always do, and fat lot of help that's been in the past.

The main gain is still that glorious hole where ****ing 3KZ ...

Unlike with the Royals, nobody gives a shit how the Roys go in their first 3 matches, especially not the boys from the BJ Oval. They'll start paying attention when the Stacy Q Rage marathon is over.

Royals by 11 points. Then a protest. Then Royals by 10 points. Then another protest. And so on and so forth. Eventually Royals by 1 point but by then it'll be finals time - Gold City will be clear second-last and the Roys will be losing an elimination final.
