People that ignore damning empirical evidence and deflect using some mystical excuse so they don't have to engage deserve it imo.

How's this then:

In the Champion Data prospectus they list the amount of minutes a player spends on the ground. Dunstan spent 85 minutes per game on the ground last year. That was the 4th lowest of anyone at the Saints. The only players that spent less time was: Goddard, McCartin and Pierce. Goddard and McCartin both had their times seriously impacted by injury while Pierce played only one game - his first.

All our other players classified by CD as midfielders had over 94 minutes: Armo 94, Ross 98, Steven 99, Newnes 107.

From a brief glance through the rest of the teams, most established mids are around that 100min mark. It's hard to find many around 85min and all that I've found are younger with way less games played or were players that got injured.

Can you explain this?

If you consider a TOG% of 70% as an outlier. (See as quoted above by Crustie Undies).
When running 6 mids produces an average 67% TOG.

This TOG% argument really only has legs if we know the rotation protocols (which no one on this board does) or it is used in conjunction with individual act KPI's.

Otherwise it's just as useful as quoting time on ground in furlongs per fortnight.

Perhaps we could measure a ratio of possessions per minute?

Edit. Handpassed to mackie Before the 50 was paid. Also explains why it was such a long 50 as mackie had the ball in the middle when he paid the 50 when Joey ran past

Gresham is a new one, Paddy Hickey Longer Lonnie Armo Geary has been let off the hook since being made captain, The coach and coaching staff have to feel any real heat, Ameet, The recruiting dept, hell even Matt Finnis has escaped any wrath yet, we could blame Seaford again?

Great post there......agree it's early days....I've said this before on here but I think we all at times forget this;

It's only at the end of TWO full seasons ago that we claimed the wooden spoon.......we hit rock bottom then and to everyone's surprise won 12 games last season....one season after many said we wouldn't win a game in 2015.

IMO we had to basically rebuild pretty much the whole side from the end of 2013 when it was obvious to all that we were in deep doo doo. I remember thinking at the time that this is a monumental task with zero room for errors.

We've added in players each year and some will be hits...others misses.

It will take a little time.......it's easy to have melts at the moment(guilty as charged yr honor)

I guess it doesn't help when you see who we have drafted since 2013....below... and where they are now......some we would have thought would be really firing with things:

On the surface...that looks a pretty good array of names.....way to early to call on most......the top 4 above should be getting the most scrutiny....Goddard just had some terrible luck....

shall award a Free Kick to the Player against whom the conduct was
directed or who is nearest to where the conduct occurred.
(b) Where a Field Umpire has awarded a Free Kick or a Mark to a Player

engages in conduct for which a Free Kick would ordinarily be awarded,
then the resultant Free Kick shall be taken where the offence occurred, or
a Fifty-Metre Penalty shall be awarded to the Player with the original Free
Kick or Mark, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team.

Going by what the umpire said on mic;

18. FIFTY-METRE PENALTY
18.1 WHEN IMPOSED
Where a field Umpire has awarded a Free Kick or a Mark to a Player, the field
Umpire shall also award a Fifty-Metre Penalty in favour of that Player if the
field Umpire is of the opinion that any Player or Official from the opposing side:
(a) has encroached The Mark;
(b) engages in Time Wasting;
(c) uses abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene language towards
an Umpire;
(d) behaves in an abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene manner towards
an Umpire or disputes the decision of an Umpire;
(e) enters the Protected Area, except when the Player is accompanying or
following within 2 metres of their opponent;
(f) has not returned the football directly and on the full to the Player awarded
the Free Kick or Mark;

When the field Umpire imposes a Fifty-Metre Penalty, the following procedure
shall apply:
(a) the field Umpire shall signal to the Timekeeper to stop the clock used
for the timing of the Match for such time as it takes to impose the
Fifty-Metre Penalty;
(b) the field Umpire shall advance The Mark by 50 metres in a direct line with
the centre of the Goal Line; and
(c) if the Player who is obtaining the benefit of the Fifty-Metre Penalty is less

Given the free was for a bump on Smith, the 50 should have been from the point of the free and not the disposal of Mackie, as Smith had already disposed of the ball, thus voiding the 16.7 (b) condition, the umpire cited 18.1 (c) in abusive language then failed 18.2 (b) in advancing the mark from Mackies location who was not the initial benefit of the free.

Moot point though, because they're still dipshits who claim it was the correct call and the book will revised to prove that yes they were correct retroactively because reasons.

I found the rotation protocols for you:
Protocol 1 - Dunstan gets winded walking up a flight of stairs. Get him off the ground as much as possible.

Look I'm not disagreeing with you that Luke's performance has not been great.

But you cannot use his TOG% as anything other than a reference point, because by itself it is meaningless.
A 70% TOG% is quite reasonable if he is not rated among the top four mids, it may be a deliberate strategy to maximise their TOG, and his role is to be secondary.
Or the midfield coaches want to increase the diversity of players run through there so by definition, his game time suffers.
I don't know if either possibility is the case but also, neither do you.
That's why the rotation protocols are important.
He might only be allocated 14 minutes game time per quarter.
And irrespective of his on field performance, that's still only 70% TOG.

And on that, the 70% TOG is certainly no outlier as you have indicated.
It's average.

And that might very well be his role, a GOP.

Because his other measurables certainly indicate that.
