Donuts is a poor coach in finals there is no denying it but far out I swear some of you will blame him for an over cooked turkey on Xmas day.

Sam Hayes wasn’t good enough.

Generally speaking, the players we delist or let go don't do a lot elsewhere. Trading is a bit different but overall, we do pretty well with the list in that way.

Yeah but that’s only because Ken has already destroyed their will to live 😉

Perhaps he wasn't good enough to forge a career at AFL level, but he was still a better option than the overcooked (Lycett) and raw (Teakle) turkeys who were being selected ahead of him when available.
It's debatable whether he was better than those other two or not. It seems that both Lycett and Teakle got a bit more interest elsewhere if that counts for anything. All 3 weren't up to it in 2023, Lycett at least had some runs on the board but he definitely was overcooked by the end of the season.

How could you go into a season with all four ruckmen on your list not up to AFL standard?

Lycett despite the bollocking he gets here was a good solid AFL standard ruck. When fit. And there was the rub, he was an injury waiting to happen and it always did.

Hayes I had high hopes for, really good tap ruck but the question of his engine haunted him. And that last game against Richmond, he was just bullied by Nank and Soldo. That was a de Luca performance and would have stamped his card.

I saw the attraction to Teakle with his size and athleticism but he played like someone who had never seen a football in his life. You'd swear we drafted him from a fjord in Greenland a week earlier.

Visentini I really like, size, aggression, ruck technique. He has heaps of potential but was too immature to lead an AFL ruck division just yet.

It's been a weakness for so long, especially since the Ryder suspension. Why we couldn't draft an experienced delisted ruckman in the past 7 years even as a rookie is a mystery to me. Even Ceglar would have been preferable to any of our current rucks at the pointy end of this season.

Hayes will end up playing bush league most probably back in Victoria.
Can’t wait to see who takes over as the BF hard luck story this year.

Haha yeah I know right. It's hilarious. Listen to all the idiots on Bigfooty questioning how the club develops tall players and calling for change!

I hope everyone liked Matthew Lobbe's 2014 season, because that's the only competent season of football played by a Port Adelaide drafted ruckman who we selected in a year starting with a 2.

(Lobbe was also notably drafted as mostly a key forward and fell off a cliff after 2014)

For even more fun you can play the same game with Key Forwards, where you'll only find Todd Marshall's last 3 seasons, and i'd find plenty of argument from certain posters trying to claim them as competent.

It's certainly not a systemic issue where we fail to develop talls though, the idiots on Bigfooty just can't pick talent though am I right!

Yeah I know right! The ruck factory at Port Adelaide spits out 1 solitary dud in an otherwise unparalleled era of success with All Australians and HOF legends abound and all of a sudden people want to question Hinkley's tall development credentials

Well I for one won't have it.

Hayes didn't get a run at it and got played as a forward pocket at SANFL level for 2 seasons after winning the Maggies B&F because we were obviously playing one of the 30-40 other elite ruckmen we developed during the Hinkley era.

But never mind, it's not like there are any real consequences for any of this.

checks notes

I'm being told that this offseason we traded a first round pick, a former first round pick and a second round pick for the reverse Coleman winner and two guys who weren't in the best 22 of their old clubs which both missed finals this year.

for the reverse Coleman winner

A 195cm local who could’ve been drafted at the time (pick 66), but the club took Jake Patmore (pick 58), Joel Garner (pick 60) and Dom Barry (pick 61) instead.

Who needs key position prospects when you can stack the list with retreads and tweeners and a pay a premium for much-needed tall timber 6 years later?

Hayes was never up to AFL standard that’s why nobody was interested in him at any other club.
He was only hard done by on BF just like other fan boys.
If there was a grain of potential in him another club would have picked him up even as rookie.
The excuse will be Hinkley killed him and made it impossible for him to be even considered by another club because of some fantasy reason.
At the end of the day the club was right and there decision has been backed up by 17 other clubs.
Game over

“Hayes was never up to AFL standard”

“The club was right”

Which is why we paid him to be here for 6 years.

😂

I'd be more inclined to agree if the club had any successes in the development of any tall player in the last 15 years.
Sam clearly had more than a "grain of potential". I'm no big city footballologist. All I know is I saw his first game at the Maggie's as a teenager winning taps and clunking a mark on the wing and I thought this bodes well. But if you're young and tall at port it never bodes well

Hayes had potential - No doubt. But he also had issues that dont go hand-in-hand with elite sports. However, the club clearly had no idea how to get the best out of him, and clearly blew opportunities to play him in the AFL. There was a hell of a lot of wasted development with Hayes!

They knew he had professionalism issues years ago, yet chose to persist with holding onto him, but misusing him & never giving him opportunities when they presented.

Just baffling.

I think you must be mistaking me for some kind of Hinkley apologist, I'm nothing of the sort but i do think he gets blamed for absolutely everything and it does get a little tiresome having every single thread infested with Hinkley this and Hinkley that.

In some instances it may be true that Hinkley has played a big part in torching a player's career but i don't believe that to be the case in this instance, nor do i think it was the case in the other hill you've chosen to die on with Butcher.

It's possible (i think highly) that Sam Hayes & John Butcher could've been put in the best development program in the league and still not made it.

We probably haven't invested heavily in talls at the draft, opting for late or rookie picks and acquiring them through trades instead. I think it has worked out okay that method, but doesn't please everyone and hopefully Visentini finally breaks the mould and we can develop one of our own.

If we held Hayes and Lycett to the same standard we would have delisted Lycett after the 2020 prelim

You can't sack a guy for a game no one at the club acknowledges happened. ;)

Oh wait 2020 ...

Interesting times ahead I've seen footage of Soldo moving around the ground slower than Sam Hayes after a carton of marlboros.. jeez I hope my eyes are deceiving me.
Soldo is not the messiah. He's just a rehash of Scott Lycett from four or five years ago. Solid, but no better than that. It was a desperation move brought about by our own list management incompetence.
