The other element with Hayes is that his lack of around the ground fitness needed for a ruck might be genetic as his brother really struggled to do a 2km time trail for last years draft.

Hodges also played in an era when 18 beers on a Saturday night was a legitimate part of your training regime.Agree with this.
"Scott Hodges liked a dart or five!"
Yes. Scott Hodges also kicked 153 goals one year and won 8 flags. Pointless comparison.
I dont actually have a problem with someone saying "well, he's just given up now after doing the right things and being treated poorly by those in charge of selection."
Fair enough if that's your point of view, but let's not pretend that once he's off the list he's going to another club and will embarrass Hinkley by becoming a top shelf ruckman. If he's serious then he won't be on the lung biscuits whilst his career is at a cross roads.
Lets not pretend a dart or five in the off-season is hampering anyones output in-season though.. a third of the squad would be downAgree with this.

God the weird hill to die on thing is so 2015.Look, I don't follow Sam around to know if he's having one dart whilst half-cut in the off-season or smoking a pack a day or vaping, as was mentioned here.
I'm also not so naive as to think that other players also aren't lighting up from time to time. You repeating that over and over isn't a revelation to anyone and it's a weird hill to want to die on.
The reality is that Sam has question marks around his fitness, and indulging in smoking isn't going to help, nor is it a sign that he's completely blameless in not being selected to play AFL football.
If he was covering the ground well then we aren't having this conversation.
Does he really improve our team though?Agree with this, but the way I look at it is, he's going to improve our team whether its just for the next six games or till the end of the year who cares. I'd still play a guy who can impact than a carbon rod like Teakle despite his effort.
I would also take up smoking in the off-season last year if I was him and consistently treated with absolute disdain by the coaching staff. In what universe would you blame the guy for being unprofessional after the career he has had here. Dominated the SANFL, clearly our best ruckman 2 years ago left to rot for years- THEN, to be given a chance only because Hinkley had no other option. To do a good job and get the record for most hit outs in your first 7 games was only to be dropped for a no ruckman system and replaced in the mid season draft for a guy who had played 6 games of senior football up to that point. Can you blame him for throwing in the towel? I absolutely don’t.

Can a player be delisted at this stage in the season and if so would he be eligible for the mid season draft.
Sam Hayes not requesting a trade away from this cess pitt is the only thing thats got me thinking "maybe this isn't all on the coaches".
It could go either way. I think he's capable of making it but he has to want it too.
His brother was sick.
I'm tired of pretending this isn't an issue. The discrimination and lack of accomodation for eshay culture in AFL circles is quite frankly appalling. Another example of AFL bigotry. What this episode suggests is that there needs to be stronger programs in place to help eshays transition into the AFL system
Thanks for that.AFAIK clubs can only delist players in the official listing periods at the end of season.
Sam is now the poster boy for a mid season trade period.
Looks like his papers are stamped, should be given a chance to find a new home.
It was such a bad look for him but he still got drafted.
It's a pretty weird thing. Why would you run a 2 km time trial if you are sick.
I hadn't heard that he was sick that day. Can you please show me where you got this information.
I thought i read he had undiagnosed glandular fever, but i could be mistaken
He was running out games of football just fine before the time trial... So my uneducated guess would be something was a little wrong. It would make a lot of sense if the young fella had some type of sickness but if not, he's struggled on a basic 2km run.
