Intersting article saying Champion Data has Sydney Stack, Connor Rozee and Bailey Smith ranked above Sam Walsh for Rising Star Award. https://m.afl.com.au/news/2019-06-2...ar-stats-say-gun-blue-is-not-in-the-top-three

"EARLY in the season, it seemed a fait accompli the No.1 draftee from last year, Sam Walsh, was destined to win the NAB AFL Rising Star Award. Now, the stats reveal he might not deserve to finish on the podium.

That's the verdict from Champion Data, which has a surprise name in the top three, ahead of the ultra-impressive Blue."

Good point Dazlington, we've got differing opinions but come back to the Bay and make some threads mate!

That's not what the article says. It just says he's ranked 4 on Playing Ratings of 1st year players. It doesn't say those three are above him for the Rising Star award. The Rising Star award is decided by a panel, not Champion Data.

No other first year player has played full time midfield with so little support.

The kid is gun and this title smells of hot streaming piece of dog poo.
The title is a direct quote from the article and it is true that Walsh is ranked as the 16th worst player in the league for turnovers when under no pressure. Stack and Rozee are much more efficient and perhaps more valuable.

Look at all those absolute spuds who are above him on the list! It's almost as if Getting a lot of the ball results in Turning the ball over more often

Walsh gets more disposals = more likely to make mistakes.

Stack plays across halfback. I would expect his 'no pressure' disposals to be under far less pressure than any of Stacks.

It's an incorrect use of statistics to push the narrative that the rising star is still up for grabs.
Fair point but Walsh gets to play midfield every game because of lack of depth at Carlton, if Stack or Rozee were playing permanent midfield, they would be seen as better than Walsh imo.

Looks a solid player but doesn't have any star qualities. Good runner , good accumulator, but he isn't explosive and kicking lacks penetration . Smith and rozee are the stars of this draft with stack just behind atm.
He is Tom Scully mk2

He is Tom Scully mk2

Already a far better accumulator than Scully and is far more contested. Bad call.

I agree he doesn't have superstar qualities, but that's pretty standard Pick 1 stuff. You pick the sure thing.

20 players listed, how many are in rolling AA sides?

At a guess I'd say at least half have been included at least once.

Anyone who knows football can tell that Sydney Stack is a better player than Sam Walsh. He's getting 20 possessions a game from half-back, can mark the ball, can run through players and is running at an unprecedented 80% kicking efficiency for a first year player.

I guess none of the 18 clubs know football because he was overlooked in the entire 2018 national draft.

If the draft was re done tomorrow based on a small sample size at AFL level from some players selected where would he go? 1? 2? 3?

I'd be tossing up with Rozee but it's not like he'd slide outside the top 3.
In hindsight, the true draft order was 1/ Rozee 2/Stack 3/ Bailey Smith 4/ Sam Walsh imo.
