Essendon Football Club today appointed former Premiership player Sean Wellman as an assistant coach.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said he was delighted to welcome Wellman back to the Club.

What exactly does this role involve???

I see it as someone who make suggestions about the use of players in different positions on match day, agree?? Pretty sure that we don't need Laidley to help out with this.

Surely the work that goes into each and every game during the week will prepare the players/coaching staff for any tactics that shall be used by us or the opposition during the match.

Been impressed with Wellman's work at Melbourne. He has overseen Frawley and Garland's development from day 1, so he knows how to develop great defenders.

Also, Melbourne don't actually have the most talented players in defence (Rivers, MacDonald, Bartram, Warnock), yet they play as a unit. i hope our defence can be like that next year

Think he is having chats with a few other clubs is Laidley (Carlton for one), certainly worth a good look still though that's for sure.

Montgomery and Matthew Lappin are two from the Blues who left, could fill one of the other assistant positions if Wallis is not interested.

Former Adelaide skipper Simon Goodwin is already a lock to join Hird and there is speculation former Bombers Sean Wellman and Dean Wallis also will come on board.

Goodwin hasnt been officially named yet... seems like he will join us though.

Mark Williams would be more of a chance instead of Laidley. Interesting to see if Wallis ends up joining us again or not....

I would like to see Lappin, was an amazing player for what his attributes were and must be able to convey his experiences as a player in a learned fashion, if he is a good communicator he could be very worthwhile to our young list.
