Seven ditches footy for the Olympics

this probably belongs on the footy fourth estate board, but as many people don't check that i thought i'd leave it hear.

chris bath just announced on seven news that seven has done a deal with foxtel that 'allows channel 7 to show the olympics uninterrupted on Sunday.'

that's pretty average i reckon. as much as i love the olympics, carlton vs north is shaping as a pretty interesting game. i'd imagine those who support those teams that don't have FTA wouldn't be that impressed. and i don't see how it gets around the rules that half of afl games have to be on FTA...

Great news for Olympics lovers. It's just one game of footy that can be seen on fox- can't see the olympics anywhere else (SBS are restricted in what they can show).

Would have been better if they sold the game to Ten though.

It depends on which state you live in.The Carlton v North game is now live in Vic,Tas and SA on sunday on ch7 and live on Main Event elsewhere.WA get the Frockers v Saints game,I gather live

VLAD caves in to allow ch7 to show druggy games

Why can't Seven give the match to 10? One lost game is not going to destroy them and 10 are the co-rights holders.

If the networks had any brains they'd all be showing the games, at least the viewer could choose between some of the different stuff thats on.

oh really? i was of the impression that this was a national thing... apparently not. i live in canberra, so perhaps this is only a northern states thing.

Logic has no place at Channel 7.

Actually, logic does.

They are a commercial television network who operate to make profits for their shareholders.

Some people need to remember that free to air television means viewers get to watch the programs for free .... no need to pay!

So, how do they pay for the sporting rights???? they have to get advertisers ... and you know what? ... the advertisers want their adverts played in the sporting programs! (wow, this isn't rocket science)

Now, here is how the logic works. Seven would have paid a helluva lot more for the Olympic Games rights than the AFL rights and they would also be able to charge a lot more for advertising in the Olympics coverage.

Was this explanation simple enough or do you need further assistance.

Remember, it is called free to air ... the viewer doesnt pay and they dont force you to watch! If this happened on pay tv then you may have reason to complain.

Whoa, settle down there champ. Talk about missing the point.

The logic call you were replying to was in relation as to why 7 can't broadcast both the Olympics and AFL simultaneously.

Simply they can't do this due to Government regulations, both sports on the anti-syphon list, therefore, both have to be on primary channels. It's also the reason the secondary Olympic sports are on SBS and not 7 subdigital channels. The events can be on-sold to Pay-TV channels, as is seen with the current AFL TV agreement.

Quoted via Ian Johnson this morning, and can be found at tvtonight.com.au

“It’s not ideal," he said, "but as I said before we can’t put two different pictures on at once.”

But then if you read the article quoted in the 3rd thread, you probably could have saved your rant.

Lol at uninterrupted channel 7 coverage.

They are ****ing shite...ruining the games

Yeh I was beginning to wonder if there was any sport going on at the Olympics at all, but thankfully SBS is actually dispensing with the bull****.

Seems like every time I turn to 7 it has a combo of:
Ch7 'celebrity' talking heads waffling about SFA;
Discussions about upcoming events;
Filler stories;
Replays (x8) of Australian medal winners;
Ads.

Now I'm all for variety, but it would also be great to actually see some sports (okay a little harsh, but they've lost the plot and totally overdone the yada yada fillers.

This is actually great news because it means now the AFL as sure as shit will give the rights back to Channel 9 at the next TV rights deal ...

london 2012 shall be better
on 9 and foxtel
atleast if 9 get the footy again, they can show footy, cause foxtel would do an awesome job
ie, the 06 commonwealth games, they had 6 dif channels of dif sports, twas mad!
and they can accually show australaian events! (unlike sbs)

I thought 9 were after the Olympics in 2012.

As a Nth Melb supporter living in Townsville without Foxtel, this is very disappointing.
If the Olympics coverage so far is any guide, a break in coverage for a couple of hours from 12 pm to 3pm (Chinese Time) wont mean we miss any live sport, apart from Heat No. 150 from the pool.
We will have Libby Tricketts Life story, Stephanie Rices latest photo shoot or sore throat, pretty photos of panda's, a re run of the opening ceremony, the highlights of that Yum-Cha rubbish or horse head Johanna Griggs telling us whats coming up (but with no actual time quoted).

Channel 7 are not allowed to show different sports and on their digital channels at the same time.

EG Channel 7 and 7HD must either show the Olypmics or footy not both.

If that's the case then we should be venting our frustration towards the government, not 7.

It's not 7's fault legislation prevents them from showing the Olympics on 7 and the football on 7HD (or vice versa)

While legislation prevents them, it also protects them. Do you really think that Channel 7, a business that makes irs money from selling adverts, wants to have multiple signals?

How would they sell time to advertisers if they are splitting their own audience? I mean an Olympic adveriser may be a little pissed at 7 watering down their own viewer numbers by competing with themselves.

I remain entirely unconvinced that the FTA's really want to compete with themselves in this way.
